Celebrating Student Success Beyond the Classroom
A Message from the Principal

Dear parents, carers and friends of Bethany,
Congratulations to our Year 12 Flames, the Graduating Class of 2025. Tuesday was a beautiful celebration, recognising the accomplishments and achievements of the girls as the formal stage of their school journey comes to an end, with only their HSC Examinations left to complete.
For some students studying subjects with practical components, this has already started with practical exams being completed in Languages, Dance, Music and Drama and projects being handed in for external marking in Design and Technology, Industrial Technology: Multimedia, Visual Arts, Society and Culture and English Extension 2. Already we have had some amazing results with Drama receiving 9 nominations to OnStage and Dance receiving 14 nominations to Callback, NESA’s performance showcases. Just today, we were notified that our entire Industrial Technology - Multimedia class' projects were nominated for inclusion in SHAPE - another of NESA's showcases. This is a huge achievement and we are very proud of the girls and the dedicated staff who have supported them.
The Flames are a special group of girls and this came through in all the small touches they put together to make the last few days feel personal and unique to them. There was a lot of laughter, some tears, plenty of photos and hugs as the girls said their goodbyes. I was reminded of what a special community Bethany is just watching them soak up these final moments.
These days don’t just happen - there has been a small army of staff who have been working for a significant amount of time to bring this day together and I sincerely thank them for their efforts. A special thanks to Mrs Gasnier, Ms Bullock and Mr Wilson who had leadership of this milestone event.
As I said to Year 12 in my address, they have shown themselves to be outstanding women of faith, intellect and character. I hope they always keep a little piece of Bethany in their hearts and have no doubt our flames will go on to set the world on fire.
At the end of this term, we say goodbye to not only our Year 12 students but some staff too. Thank you to Ms Danas for her work in the English department this year. Ms Danas has been a wonderful addition to our Bethany community during Mrs Golding’s maternity leave. Mrs Golding comes back to the College at the start of next term, returning to her role as Year 11 Coordinator.
We also say goodbye to Ms Fsadni who leaves Bethany, moving overseas in preparation for her upcoming wedding. Ms Fsadni has been a member of the Science Department as well as our Youth Ministry Coordinator. Ms Fsadni is a role model to the girls and encourages them to live out their faith in service of others. We wish her all the best and hope to see her back in the future.
We also say goodbye to Ms Wooby, who also leaves us ahead of her upcoming wedding. An inspirational art teacher, Ms Wooby has encouraged the girls to embrace their creativity, not just in the classroom but through involvement in many community events and art competitions. The success of our students in these areas has been largely due to her encouragement and support of their talent. Ms Wooby doesn’t leave us forever though; she will return to the College in 2027.

PASSING ON HOPE:
LOCAL PRIMARY SCHOOLS SHARE GOD'S LOVE WITH YEAR 12
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the local primary schools who visited Bethany College to deliver HSC packs with such warmth, generosity and encouragement.
It was a joy to welcome students from:
- St Finbar's, Sans Souci
- St Raphael's, South Hurstville
- St Thomas More's, Brighton Le Sands
- Mater Dei, Blakehurst
- St Mary's Star of the Sea, Hurstville
Your presence was a beautiful expression of the unity and care that define our Catholic community. In a simple yet powerful way, you reminded our students that they are deeply loved by God and surrounded by a faith filled network that believes in them. Thank you for standing with our senior students during this important milestone in their journey. We also gratefully acknowledge the faith educators who supported this initiative.

CONGRATULATIONS YEAR 12 - AND NOW HSC EXAMINATIONS
It was so great to be able to watch our class of 2025 walk across the stage on Tuesday knowing that they have been so well prepared for the next stage of their HSC journey. We are so proud of the efforts of this cohort. A number of our students completing major works/performances are already nominated for outstanding achievement in their subject. This is a testament to their amazing ability and their teachers' expert guidance.
The next three weeks are a great opportunity for Year 12 to consolidate their learning and prepare for the coming weeks where their knowledge and skills will be assessed against the rest of the state.
A link to the HSC timetable can be accessed below:
We encourage students to know their timetable and share it with family members so that we can ensure every student is at every examination on time. This will reduce their stress levels which will already be heightened as they complete the final examination for their subject.
If you are unwell or have a misadventure the day of the examination it is essential that you contact the school and inform Mrs Bullock/Mr Paff/Mrs Hart. If an illness or misadventure has impacted on your performance in the HSC you will need to get an Illness and Misadventure form from the school. These forms can be collected from Mrs Bullock/Mr Paff/Mrs Hart. We will also assist students to complete these forms.
Students should always ask for assistance if they have any questions, we are here to help. There is a powerpoint on their Year 12 Google Classroom that has the rules and procedures for their HSC exams that they should review before they begin these externally supervised examinations.
Some tips to ensure that students feel well prepared for their HSC examinations are listed below.

Some Year 12 holiday classes will be held at Bethany over the holidays. A schedule is provided below.
We encourage all students to make use of this time with their teachers.

SCS MASTERCLASS WORKSHOPS
SCS has a number of workshops available to students in the school holidays, as listed below.
We encourage all students in these subjects to attend to give themselves an edge over their competition.

YEAR 7-10 PAT TESTS | 14TH OCTOBER (TUESDAY, WEEK 1)
Years 7-10 will complete their PAT tests for Reading and Maths on Tuesday of Week 1, Term 4.
- Year 7 and Year 8 - Period 1 and 2
- Year 9 and Year 10 - Period 3 and 4
Students will need to bring a fully charged laptop and writing equipment (e.g. pen or pencil) and a water bottle. If students are absent on the day there will be catch up tests on Thursday 16th October P1-2. Students will require their equipment for their other classes (i.e. Year 9 & Year 10 P1-2, 5 and Year 7 & Year 8 P3-4, 5) on these days.

THRIFT MARKET
"In Week 8, the SRC and student leadership team came together to host a school thrift store in support of the Charitable Works Fund (CWF). The CWF supports incredible initiatives like the Ephpheta Centre for the deaf, CatholicCare social services, and Chaplaincy programs.
The response from the Bethany community was overwhelming. Students, staff, and families donated bags of clothes and accessories, which were carefully sorted, folded, organised and then displayed by our volunteers and leadership team.
It was more than just a fundraiser — it was a shared effort from the Bethany community built on generosity, teamwork, and the purpose to initiate and make change!
By the end of the store we had raised over $1100!!!
Every dollar will go toward supporting those in need, and we couldn’t have done it without the help of everyone who donated, organised (thank you Mrs Buxton and Miss Fsadni!), sold, and shopped.
Thank you for making this event such a success, your support has truly made a difference and I wish that in the coming terms we continue to come together and make a change!"

YEAR 9 STUDENTS STEP INTO LEADERSHIP: BIG SISTERS 2026 TRAINING DAY
"On Friday, 19th September, the Year 9 Cohort took part in a full day leadership training program, in preparation for our roles as Big Sisters in 2026.
This program was not only an introduction into what our roles would encompass, but an interactive and inclusive way to incorporate key leadership and mentoring skills into engaging activities that allowed us to reflect on our own experiences as Year 7s, learn how to be an encouraging role model, and build on the network of relationships that we have already established within our year group. It was of particular importance that we were able to understand the responsibility and duty as future Year 10s to guide our little sisters, and the impact that we would have on their school experience.
Our first session offered us an insight into the expectations and undertakings of these roles.
A Big Sister should not simply be an older student who greets the new Year 7s at the gates of high school, but one that takes them past this entry and leads them through the school. Meaning, Big Sisters are the role models who guide the new students through all the difficulties and challenges that are presented throughout the year, making a conscious and consistent effort to create a strong and supportive relationship with these newcomers. Through the Big Sister training program, we learnt what it means to be a mature, yet approachable leader who does not intimidate their little sisters, but rather fosters a comfortable and safe environment for open conversation.
The rest of the day was filled with highly engaging activities that the year group met with enthusiasm and eagerness. Such activities included an ice-breaker where all students had to arrange themselves in alphabetical order, and explain how they got their name, improving communication skills, and a physical task where students had to form ‘human sculptures’, creating a space for creativity and laughter. Through these activities, the year group was encouraged to branch out and interact with others in the cohort that they hadn’t had the chance to collaborate with previously. Finally, in our last session, we were given the opportunity to write welcome cards to the Little Sisters of 2026, so that they can feel warmly invited into college life, ensuring a smooth and welcoming transition into high school.
The role of Big Sister at Bethany College is so significant to the school lives of these new Year 7s. Being Year 10s next year, we will have acquired 3 full years of knowledge and experience at the College. Whether that be proud, humiliating, disappointing or joyous moments, we all have our own fair share of knowledge that we can pass on to the Year 7s of 2026, meaning the Big Sisters act as a much needed tether to a feeling of familiarity and comfort, in a new, seemingly daunting environment.
Friday’s training program was highly successful in preparing our year group for the role of Big Sister in 2026, and I’m sure a majority of our cohort will accept this rewarding undertaking with eagerness and commitment."
Andromache Papas, Year 9

R U OK? DAY
The importance of recognising this national day cannot be overstated. The Australian Bureau of Statistics report that in 2024 approximately 64% of adolescents reported “poor mental health or stress” as their top concern. Nearly half the respondents named anxiety as a serious issue affecting their daily lives.
The attached presentation was viewed in pastoral classes, which promoted discussions around what good mental health looks like and actions to take if you think a friend may not be OK. Please continue to have these discussions with your daughter.

GOAL SETTING | SEMESTER 2
Students in Years 7~11 have set three goals for themselves for Semester Two (in Faith, Intellect and Character). They have also articulated one strategy that will help them achieve their goals by the end of the year. Just as goal setting is a crucial skill for life, also important is the self-reflection undertaken when goals are not achieved. Your support in checking in with your daughter’s goals and progress are greatly appreciated.
ATTENDANCE MATTERS
College attendance at present stands at 92%. This is satisfactory but can certainly be improved. The average and cohort percentages below include both whole and partial day attendance. If students are late to school, even if they arrive before Period 1 but miss homeroom, they are behind for the day. Similarly, when students leave school early for non-essential appointments or other business, they are missing out on important class time. Please limit appointments during school time where possible and continue to encourage your daughters’ to be organised in the mornings so that she arrives at school by 8:30 a.m.

UCAT Early Interview Training
Every year we meet a lot of students expressing their regret and disappointment for leaving Interview preparation until the actual period when the interview offers are made. The big issue with this is that quite often there is simply not enough time for adequate preparation between the time when the interview offers are made and the actual interview date.
Just as with the UCAT, we cannot stress enough that students cannot underestimate the medical interview or take it too lightly. Furthermore, it is a highly competitive forum where the student will be assessed against other candidates who have not only aimed as hard to achieve their goals but are also just as sincere and strong-minded in their desire to be interviewed successfully.

SHADOW JUDGING
As mentioned in last newsletter, we ran Shadow Judging this year.
Below are Emma Ibrahim’s thoughts on the experience:
"The shadow judging experience was amazing, not only were we all able to read different books, but grasp insights on others opinions on the book. This year, Bethany College was granted the opportunity to become shadow judges, led by Miss Sladen.
Shadow Judging is a program established by the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) where young readers across the span of Australia read, critique and judge shortlisted books, using the same criteria as the professional judges to select their own "Shadowers' Choice" winners. There were 6 books in this program, and the Bethany girls judged the books from the ‘Older Readers’ category. These books included A Wreck Of Seabirds by Karleah Olson, Birdy by Sharon Kernot, Comes the Night by Isobelle Carmody, I'm Not Really Here by Gary Lonesborough, Into the Mouth of the Wolf by Erin Gough, and The Skin I'm In by Steph Tisdell.
The journey to finally deciding what book we thought was truly worthy of deeming this title was extremely enjoyable. Throughout this journey, we delved into an immersive reading experience where each book attained its own uniqueness and personality. After we finished reading a book, each shadow judge would explain their own personal experience reading this book and if it complied with the criteria - giving it a rating out of 10. We would share our own thoughts, and meetings were conducted so all the judges could have group discussions and provide their evaluations of the books. After precise judging and meticulously assessing all the books, the shadow judges collectively decided to submit the book, The Skin I’m In by Steph Tisdell as the best candidate for The Book Of The Year award.
Amidst the day the CBCA announced the Book Of The Year awards, nerves were present and all the judges were anxiously waiting for the announcement. Sadly, our book wasn’t chosen, but was awarded to I’m Not Really Here by Gary Lonesborough. But this did not diminish how delightful this reading experience was.
Being able to become a judge and take part in the CBCA Shadow Judging Competition this year was an eye-opening and rewarding experience. It enables us to step into the shoes of real literary judges, reading a diverse selection of Australia’s young adult books. We delved deep into their themes, characters, and messages - having insightful discussions about what makes every story truly impactful. Ultimately, it gave us a whole new appreciation for literature and the art of meticulously cultivating the right words to convey specific ideas, and with this, the impact books can have on readers."

Newman Symposium

The Newman Symposium took place in Week 8, and was an outstanding display of the critical and creative thinking of our Newman students in Years 7-10.
This year’s theme was “I wonder…” and students were asked to complete an inquiry-based project, embarking on deep, investigative questions about units of work they are studying, and their findings were presented at our showcase.
Some of the students’ questions have been included below.
We’re incredibly proud of these students for their independent and innovative thinking. The work reflected their capacity to interrogate their curriculum deeply and with rigour, and also their flair for creative presentation.
Congratulations to all our Newman students!
A sample of “I wonder…” questions from Years 7-10:
“I wonder if we’re prepared for the next pandemic.”
“I wonder how bildungsroman texts and films influence the behaviours and decision making of individuals.”
“I wonder what evidence points to humanity as the victim and perpetrator in environmental deterioration.”
“I wonder whether the United Nations is truly effective in resolving conflict to protect everybody's human rights.”
“I wonder how different Australia would be today if the 1967 Referendum had failed.”
“I wonder, what would we have to do to make Mars livable?”
"I wonder how Disney villains have changed over time."
“I wonder how scientists created a pH indicator.”
“I wonder how the mythology of the ancient world has affected modern times.”
"I wonder how I can create my own dystopian story."

All roads lead to... Riverwood??!

Located in the heart of Belmore Road, Riverwood and across the road from that other iconic Italian establishment, the Conca D’Oro reception lounge, is a portal to Italy – Roma Capoccia. This is not just a restaurant but an authentic Italian eatery where our students didn’t just eat the delicious food. They also had to make it!
The Year 10 Travel Guides class and Year 9 Italian students were treated to a masterclass in making restaurant-ready bruschetta (please don’t call it brooshetta!), arancini, fettuccine, and to top it all off.... tiramisù! The owner, Federico Lembo, and his daughter Triniti, ensured that every student observed and then replicated the steps involved in creating these dishes not just for our lunch but also with the confidence and expertise to give it a go at home for their family members.
Thanks to Prof Enza Criniti, Federica Gurnari (our Italian Language Assistant), and to Federico and Triniti for their hospitality and guidance in the kitchen. Buon appetito!

If you’re looking for an uplifting podcast that makes you feel like doing something positive with your life, this might be the one. Our own Year 12 student and NSW School of Languages Ambassador, Ava Chow, is interviewed in the latest episode of The Language Exchange podcast.

Even if Italian isn’t your thing, the message about “just do it!” is universal and hopefully encourages everyone to just give anything and everything a go.
