Term 4 - Week 2
A Message from the Principal

Welcome back to Term 4. It's been a great start and nice to see our girls. The term is looking to be a busy one with lots of events and our new school leaders are coming up with lots of ways to create community spirit.
Over the holidays, I was notified that Joanne Lewis, our Religion and Mission Captain had been accepted into the Cardinal Pell Leadership Program. This amazing opportunity provides Year 11 Catholic school leaders with a three-week immersion in Rome and London, focussed on the Catholic tradition and the history of Western civilisation. It is an amazing achievement to be selected; only 14 students are undertaking this experience.

Last week, our Year 12 students began their HSC examinations and we couldn’t be more proud of them. They have worked so very hard and it has been lovely to see them supporting each other at the end of exams, chatting with their teachers about how they think they went and being so delighted and relieved at another exam being finished. We are looking forward to celebrating with them in the coming weeks at their formal. Here they are lined up and ready for Paper 1 of the English Examination.

At the start of this term, we also welcomed back Mrs Ashleigh Munsie, Mrs Rochelle Dunlop and Mrs Laura Golding from maternity leave. Mrs Golding returns to her role and Year 11 Coordinator and Mrs Dunlop and Mrs Munsie are back working hard in the PDHPE department. We also farewell Mrs Marina Nashed as she leaves to go on maternity leave. Mrs Nashed has been a wonderful Year Coordinator of Year 9, in addition to a passionate and dedicated teacher. We look forward to meeting her new person in a few weeks time. In Mrs Nashed’s absence, Mrs Angela Saveski will take over as the Year 9 Coordinator.
During the week, we notified staff and students about some upcoming changes to the Canteen at Bethany. Beginning the 2026 School Year, the College will be outsourcing the operations of the College canteen to an external provider. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank our current canteen staff; Robyn Jackson, Kathryn Barker and Vanessa Pelayias for their dedication, hard work, and commitment to the College community over the years. Their contribution has been deeply valued and appreciated.

From the Assistant Principal

Travelling to and From School
One common area of feedback we get from our local community is in regards to how our girls travel to and from school. We have received feedback on girls crossing the road in an unsafe manner and some examples of poor conduct of girls on the buses. Below is some information on safe and respectful travel that I would appreciate you discussing with your daughters. This info will also be passed on to the girls directly.
Walking to and From School Safely
When walking to and from the College it is important to always do so in a safe manner.
- Identify safe crossing points
- Always look for vehicles before stepping onto roads
- Use crossings and footpaths when available
- Walk facing oncoming traffic if no footpath is available and stay as far from the road as possible
- Be cautious of vehicles entering or leaving driveways and cars reversing in parking lots.
Student Conduct Expectations on School Buses
According to Transport for NSW and affiliated school transport providers, students are expected to:
- Respect drivers, transport staff, and other passengers
- Stay seated where possible and behave safely while on board
- Use appropriate language and avoid disruptive behaviour
- Keep noise levels down and avoid distracting the driver
Getting On and Off the Bus
- Wait calmly at the bus stop and board in an orderly manner
- Never push or shove when entering or exiting the bus
- After getting off the bus, wait until it has driven away before crossing the road
- Always use pedestrian crossings or safe crossing points
- Avoid walking behind or in front of the bus immediately after disembarking
I look forward to what will be a busy but enjoyable Term 4.

CELEBRATING FAITH AND SERVICE
On Sunday 16 November, the Annual Catechist Mass will take place at St Mary’s Cathedral hosted by the Sydney Archdiocese and the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. This special celebration honours the dedication of student catechists across Sydney. We congratulate the 21 Year 10 students from Bethany College who have generously served as Catechists throughout 2025 sharing their faith with primary school students.
I’m also proud to announce that three Bethany students will represent our College at the Australian Catholic Youth Festival in Melbourne. This national event brings together thousands of young people to celebrate and deepen their Catholic faith. Thank you to Ms Ye for accompanying the students and supporting them on this exciting journey.
The students attending the Youth Festival will be commissioned during a special Mass on Sunday 23 November at 10:30 am also at St Mary’s Cathedral. We pray that this experience will be enriching for all involved.

Teaching & Learning News

HSC
Year 12 students started their HSC examinations on the 16th October and the feedback from students and their teachers so far is that the examinations have been very fair. Students have been well prepared for their final examinations and it has been great to see students leave examinations with a smile on their faces. Examinations continue until the 7th November. We wish all of Year 12 the best of luck and encourage them to be consistent with the revision and make sure that they make contact with their teachers if they have any questions or would like feedback on practice responses.
YEAR 12 2026 PATTERN OF STUDY INTERVIEWS
The incoming HSC class of 2026 had the opportunity to meet with their teachers on Monday to discuss their HSC pattern of study. Students were well prepared for the interviews and were receptive to the feedback provided to them. Students are now able to make adjustments to their pattern of study, including dropping units. Our advice, based on various research, is that students maintain a 10 or 11 unit program throughout the HSC year. Additionally, we are advising any students who are studying an extension subject to wait a few weeks before dropping down to ten units. Having 10 or 11 units provides ample study time and can allow students to better manage their time.
Congratulations on starting your final year of study.
HANDLING DIGITAL OVERLOAD | HOW TO STAY FOCUSED IN A WORLD FULL OF DISTRACTIONS
Screens are everywhere - smartphones, laptops, tablets and while they’re essential for learning, they can easily become a source of distraction. Between endless notifications, social media feeds, and gaming apps, it’s easy to lose focus and waste hours. Managing digital overload is key to staying productive and maintaining balance. Here’s how you can regain control of your screen time and use technology as a tool for success.
1. Set Digital Boundaries
To stay focused, establish clear boundaries for when and how you use your devices. For example:
● Turn Off Notifications: Silence alerts during study time to avoid interruptions.
● Create a Study-Only Space: Designate certain areas, like your desk, as screen-free zones for non-study activities. Set Screen Time Limits: Many smartphones have features that let you track and limit time spent on specific apps.
Tip: Use apps like Focus Keeper or Forest, which gamify productivity by encouraging you to stay off your phone.
2. Schedule Regular Screen Breaks
Staring at screens for long periods isn’t just distracting, it's also tiring for your eyes and mind. Breaks help you refresh and refocus. A great method is the 20-20-20 rule:
● Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. In addition, try incorporating non-screen activities into your routine. Read a physical book, go for a walk, or practice a hobby to give your brain a break from digital input.
Tip: Use break time to stretch, hydrate, or grab a healthy snack, these habits boost both focus and well-being.
3. Use Technology to Your Advantage
While screens can be distracting, they’re also powerful tools when used wisely. Leverage apps and digital tools that help you stay organized and productive:
● Google Keep or Notion: For organizing tasks and notes.
● Quizlet: For studying with digital flashcards.
● Stay Focused or Freedom: To block distracting websites during study sessions.
Tip: When using your laptop, keep only one tab open at a time to maintain focus. Avoid the temptation of multi-tasking with multiple tabs.
4. Unplug Before Bedtime
Excessive screen time, especially at night, can interfere with your sleep cycle. The blue light emitted by devices reduces melatonin production, making it harder to fall asleep. To combat this:
● Turn Off Devices an Hour Before Bed: Swap screens for relaxing activities like reading or journaling.
● Use Night Mode: If you must use a device, enable night mode to reduce blue light exposure.
Tip: Create a bedtime ritual that signals your body it’s time to wind down, such as a short meditation or light stretching.
Balance Is Key
Digital devices are an essential part of life, but they shouldn’t dominate your time or attention. By setting boundaries, taking regular breaks, and using technology intentionally, you can stay focused and productive while maintaining balance. Remember, you control your screens, they don’t control you. Start making these changes today, and enjoy the benefits of a healthier relationship with technology.

Wellbeing Update

Induction day
The new Year 12 Student leadership team took a day out this week to dream and plan for 2026. They did some work on their own strengths and challenges in leadership, dreamed together for 2026 and what they want for Bethany in terms of student participation, and then began planning for Term 1 events. The day was filled with much passion, many ideas and a genuine understanding that their roles are to be of service to the College community. We thank them for their enthusiasm and volunteerism, and look forward to an exciting year ahead for them and for the school.

Attendance
In Week 4, students will undertake their last attendance check for the year. It is crucial that students are aware of their own attendance percentage and take responsibility for it, as absence from school solely affects their learning and connection. Please continue to encourage your daughter in attending school each day to build up those habits, mindsets and disciplines that will be advantageous to them in life, both at school and beyond.

Goal setting
Students are encouraged to continue to strive towards their Semester 2 goals. Setting goals is such an important part of success in various domains, and needs to be contextualised for each individual. Please continue to discuss your daughter’s goals with them, as many will need help to keep on track with these. It will be a very positive conversation at the end of the year for each girl who has thought through their goals, written them down and then worked towards them. It’s not the end result that is important but the process to get there.

Year 11 Visual Arts News

Year 11 Visual Arts students had the opportunity to explore their own artmaking practice with a self-directed learning task. Year 11 were required to apply a range of techniques, building on the skills they have developed while at Bethany, to create highly successful artworks.
This project provided students a taste of what’s to come for their HSC of Work and was an affirming learning experience for girls to identify their strengths moving into Year 12.

SOCIETY AND CULTURE SPOTLIGHT: ELISHA PETELO VISITS YEAR 12
We were thrilled to welcome back Elisha Petelo, Society and Culture student from the Class of 2024, who placed 7th in the state overall. Elisha generously shared her insights and tips with our current Year 12 Society and Culture class, offering valuable advice on navigating the PIP process from a student perspective. She discussed her approach, how she decided on a topic idea, the challenges she faced, the benefits she gained, how to approach primary research and how it helps to prepare students for the demands of tertiary study.
Her visit was both inspiring and practical, whereby students had the opportunity to discuss their own PIP ideas and gain feedback from someone who has excelled in the subject. The class appreciated Elisha’s thoughtful guidance and relatable advice.
To further support students, as Elisha is part of our after-school tutoring program, many students will have the opportunity to receive more support along the way.
We are very appreciative of Elisha’s time and insights.
