A Message from the Principal
Dear Parents, Carers and Friends of Bethany,
Today is the Feast of the Sacred Heart, a day of devotion which emphasises the unmitigated love, compassion, and long-suffering of the heart of Christ towards humanity. The image below can still be seen in many churches and homes. The sacred heart of Jesus reminds us of the earthly Jesus and the role model that he is to show compassion and be the Heart of Christ in all that we do with all of those who we come across.
Prayer of Trust in The Sacred Heart
In all my temptations, I place my trust in You, O Sacred Heart of Jesus.
In all my weaknesses, I place my trust in You, O Sacred Heart of Jesus.
In all my difficulties, I place my trust in You, O Sacred Heart of Jesus.
In all my trials, I place my trust in You, O Sacred Heart of Jesus.
In all my sorrows, I place my trust in You, O Sacred Heart of Jesus.
In all my work, I place my trust in You, O Sacred Heart of Jesus.
In every failure, I place my trust in You, O Sacred Heart of Jesus.
In every discouragement, I place my trust in You, O Sacred Heart of Jesus.
In life and in death, I place my trust in You, O Sacred Heart of Jesus.
In time and in eternity, I place my trust in You, O Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Semester 1 Reporting
During the past week, I have had the pleasure of reading every report from Year 7 - 10. It has been pleasing to see growth or improvement for so many students across areas such as attendance, grooming, an increase in grade or an increase in effort. Next week, bookings will become live for parent teacher interviews which take place between Wednesday June 28 - Friday June 30. This is a key time to receive feedback about your daughter and hopefully to affirm her for her progress and receive information on the next steps needed to improve. Students, teachers and parents working together, setting goals and developing strategies to achieve these are optimal conditions for learning growth.
In reading reports and then discussing these with your daughter, please take into account the following:
Attendance
- Are all partial and whole days accounted for with a note? Check on Compass and review with your daughter each time that she was absent and have a discussion on why the time out of school and was all of this necessary? It is impossible to fully catch up when away. Class discussions and questions posed in class which are unplanned form valuable learning, this is missed when students are absent.
- Lateness of a few minutes on any given day. If this is an area of concern on your daughter’s report, what measures can be put into place to avoid continual lateness. What does a report say about a person’s character if attendance is poor?
Uniform
- The ability to live with rules and expectations is essential preparation for adulthood. Whilst teenage girls may think that uniform and wearing it well is not a priority, it speaks about alignment with College values and pride.
Commitment to Learning
- Every subject has a commitment to learning. This in effect speaks of effort and preparation and has nothing to do with academic ability. We all have different levels of being able to learn with some students finding school work easier than others. This of course is where teachers adjust learning for the level needed for each girl. What we report in commitment to learning tells the reader that a student is trying and is ready to learn each day. Adding to group work as well as working independently are necessary aspects of learning in the modern world. How can your daughter develop further if some of these aspects are in need?
Overall Grade
- It is easy to reduce a report and the sum total of 6 months of work to a grade of A - E. Looking at a grade in isolation limits goal setting and thoughts of striving for improvement. Receiving an A grade means that your daughter has demonstrated an extensive understanding of the set work but there is always still room for improvement.
Areas of Learning
- These areas break up what was learned during the semester and rate students accordingly. A C grade may be given even though your daughter may have excelled in one area of the course work but at a more average level in others.
Good preparation for parent teacher interviews may involve parents already having a discussion with your daughter before reports are released as this lets parents know where your daughter thinks she is at and then reports will confirm what teachers then think. Interviews are really about addressing strategies to improve which are realistic and which all 3 parties discuss together. The idea of interviews for students being worried about what will be said is a myth. Honest conversation about getting the best education possible is what interviews are for. At times, students and parents may say “They tell me the same thing every year.” This is not a useless comment but in fact it speaks of the staff knowing your daughter and her personality and perhaps, the same improvements still need to be made.
And finally, please remember that grades are not solely based on marks. Grades are based on descriptions of the type of student who can show achievement at a certain level within her subject. There is no such thing as awarding a certain percentage of a particular grade. Basically if a teacher can ascertain that a student can demonstrate an outcome in class, even though in a test, she may have that incorrect, a high grade can still be awarded.
We very much look forward to speaking with you at interviews in the final week of term and encourage every single parent to make bookings either in person or via Zoom.
As we move closer to the end of term, a newsletter will still be published on Friday June 30 despite it being a day for interviews. During the first 4 weeks of Term 3, I will be taking some Long Service Leave. I thank Mrs Flanagan for stepping into the role of Acting Principal and Mrs Camporeale for being the Acting Assistant Principal.

College Principal
From the Assistant Principal
As we move towards the end of Term 2, I just wanted to put a reminder out about parent, teacher and student conferences. These will take place in a face to face meeting on Wednesday 28th June and Thursday 29th June. Meeting on Friday 30th June will be held via a Zoom. These meetings are an important opportunity to speak with your daughter’s teachers and discuss their progress and learning. Bookings for these will open on Monday 19th of June at 2.30pm.
Our end of Semester Awards Assembly for Years 7-10 will take place on Tuesday 27th June. Invitations to the parents and carers of award recipients have been sent out. Please send through your RSVP as soon as possible. Assembly will start at 9.15 and we aim to finish by 11.30 at the latest.
Recently, we’ve had some feedback from parents and staff from St Mary’s primary school next door regarding the pick up of siblings from the school. I’ve reminded students they should wait in line for the Waratah Gate to open and to not crowd the gate. I’ve also reminded them that only students picking up someone should be on the grounds of the primary school. Friends can wait for each other near our back gate to avoid blocking the path. If your daughter picks someone up from the primary school, please remind them of this as well.
Thanks to those parents and carers who have completed the Tell Them From Me survey. We look forward to reading your feedback.

Together We Serve
The Together We Serve, school wide service program was launched in 2022 and has grown to a community of over 150 students who voluntarily seek servant learning opportunities within and beyond Bethany. This week, it was a privilege to recognise the students who achieved a Mary, Martha or Discipleship Award for their hours of service. These students are; Bilha Baby - Mary Award; Antonia Avgerinos - Martha Award; Marianne Sarmiento - Martha Award; Evelyn Efstathakis - Discipleship Award; and Eden Fernando - Discipleship Award.
In the spirit of Martha and Mary of Bethany who collectively model the Word and Service of Jesus Christ, students are encouraged to subscribe to this wonderful program. Please see Ms Perrin Jones, Assistant Leader of Religious Education and Mission and Youth Ministry Coordinator for more information.
Towards Full Presence
“The challenge of fostering peaceful, meaningful, and caring relationships on social media prompts a discussion in academic and professional circles, as well as in ecclesial ones. What kind of humanity is reflected in our presence in digital environments? How much of our digital relationships is the fruit of deep and truthful communication, and how much is merely shaped by unquestioned opinions and passionate reactions? How much of our faith finds living and refreshing digital expressions? And who is my “neighbour” on social media?”
- Towards Full Presence #5
All members of the community are encouraged to read the recent Pastoral Reflection on Engagement with Social Media, Towards Full Presence (link is below). The document highlights the changing nature of human relationships in the digital age.
Monthly Mass
In addition to Bethany’s shared weekly Mass with St Mary’s Star of the Sea in St. Michael’s Church, Bethany offers monthly Mass in the College Chapel at lunchtime, following Reconciliation. It is an absolute pleasure to experience these intimate Masses in the surroundings of the heritage convent and reflection garden. Thank you to Fathers Janusz and George who make themselves available to support and serve the Bethany community.

Leader of RE and Mission
Wellbeing
It’s been a busy few weeks for the Student Representative Council leaders at Bethany! Several initiatives were organised for the College to raise awareness or fundraise for special causes. One of the ways that Bethany College recognised National Reconciliation week was by creating a “Sea of Hands” display in the library. Students in pastoral classes signed a template of a hand as a recognition of the need for acknowledgement of the wrongs of the past and the need for reconciliation moving forward. Librarians Alison Sladen and Chris Sultana created the wonderful display below which will become a permanent feature in the library:
On Friday June 9, we held our first lunchtime disco for the year to raise money for Vinnies. DJ Connie Kamtambis from Year 12 curated songs to inspire and motivate the group of 200 or so students, and $200 was raised for the winter appeal. A fun lunchtime was had by all!
The SRC have also organised a CLOTHES SWAP on June 23 to raise money for the Vinnies winter appeal, as well as aiming to raise awareness of the environment and waste reduction. Clothes will be sold for $1 to $5 and all money and unsold clothes will be donated to St Vincent de Paul. Thank you to the students who have brought clothes in over the past week, please continue to do so up until June 23.
Parents are invited to our second Parent information night for the year on Tuesday August 1st. On this night, parents will hear from professionals at Headspace speak on adolescent growth and development, as well as understanding mental health in young people - what it is, when to be concerned, what to do. The evening will take place in the College library and parking is available onsite. Could you please complete this form as your RSVP.
Elevate parent webinar - these information sessions have proven very helpful for both parents and students, please join the next webinar on EXAM ROOM SKILLS - information below:
Our next webinar on the 21st June will be on Exam Room Skills. It will focus on what your students can do on the day of the exam to help keep stress levels down and maximise marks. As always, please find all the information you need below: Webinar: Exam Room Skills - Minimising Stress and Maximising Marks We look forward to seeing your parents online then! |

Semester Two Reports
As the end of the academic semester approaches, we are eagerly preparing to publish student reports for Years 7 to 10. This is an opportunity to reflect on the incredible growth and achievements our students have made throughout the term. We would like to provide you with some valuable insights and suggestions on how to support your child during this important phase.
- Celebrate Progress: It's important to remember that they are not just a reflection of grades, but also a testament to their growth, effort, and engagement. Take the time to celebrate your child's progress, acknowledging their accomplishments and the areas where they have shown improvement. A positive and encouraging approach helps build their self-esteem and motivation.
- Encourage Reflection: Reports provide an opportunity for students to reflect on their own learning experiences. Encourage your child to review their report with you, discussing their strengths, areas for growth, and any goals they may want to set for the future. This reflection process helps them gain a deeper understanding of their learning journey and fosters a sense of ownership over their education.
- Set Realistic Expectations: It's essential to set realistic expectations for your child's progress. While high aspirations are commendable, it's important to recognize that every student has their own unique pace and learning style. Use the report as a guide to identify areas that may need additional attention or support, and work together with your child and their teachers to develop a plan for improvement.
- Open Communication with Teachers: Building a strong partnership between parents and teachers is crucial for student success. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child's report, ensure you book a meeting at the upcoming parent student teacher interviews. They can provide valuable insights, clarify any information, and offer guidance on how to further support your child's learning.
- Focus on the Whole Child: While academic progress is important, it's equally vital to consider your child's holistic development. Encourage their involvement in extracurricular activities, social interactions, and the pursuit of their passions. A well-rounded education encompasses not only academic achievements but also the development of social-emotional skills, creativity, and resilience.

Year 8 Incursion - Enlighten Education
Earlier this term Nikky Davis joined Year 8 as our guest workshop presenter from the award winning organisation Enlighten Education. The programs are written specifically to appeal to teenage girls and are developed by a team of teachers with vast experience in educating girls, student welfare and engaging young people.
Nikky’s message is to encourage girls to celebrate all things about themselves, challenge and rethink negative thoughts, and change the way we respond to the environment and others. The core workshop centred around negative stereotyping, sexism, media images, and the fixation on being thin: all issues faced by young people today.
"The Enlighten Education workshop was a great workshop for our year as it helped us realise more about unhealthy friendships, bullying and the ‘expectation’ set out by social media that we are supposed to ‘uphold’. The workshop taught us how to ignore some of the ‘expectations’ and just be ourselves and what to look out for in an unhealthy friendship. We did a great group activity that helped boost our confidence as people wrote about what they loved about you. Overall this workshop helped raise awareness of our wellbeing and what we should let affect us in our lives." -Gina Boyd SRC
"Throughout the workshop, we learnt about the impacts social media, bullying, and friendships have on people in our current society. The workshop was really fun and entertaining, yet it educated us about about the importance of young people's wellbeing and welfare around the world." -Katie McLoughlin SRC
"The Enlighten Education workshop was an amazing learning experience for us. I enjoyed all our activities and getting to know my friends better. We were taught how to value ourselves and learn from our mistakes. Overall I enjoyed it, and I'm so grateful we got the opportunity to participate in this workshop." -Ceanna Swindon SRC
More feedback from Year 8:
"I expected the day to be someone boring telling us information that wouldn’t help us, but Nikky was great! I learnt so much about gratitude, diversity, sisterhood and loving myself, and not listening to the voice in my head as it is the meanest."
"It was an excellent day. Talking and listening to Nikky and the group conversations we had were so positive. I learnt my friends actually love my company."
"Learning about body image was the most interesting part and seeing the photoshopped images before and after. I never knew that 80% of women don’t like themselves."
"I am much more confident after the group task today and hearing Nikky say that I am perfect the way I am."
"The biggest lesson learnt today was that social media is fake and not everyone you see on there is perfect. Showing gratitude in the group task was so rewarding."
"There was so much positivity and such a good vibe today while being taught about really important topics for myself and my peers."
"Nikky was super cool and inclusive. She made really important topics easy to talk about with our peers and appreciated our opinions."

Year 8 Coordinator
Year 8 Italian - Lunch Italian style!
Year 8 students were all invited to a birthday party – Italy’s! To celebrate 77 years of being a Republic, our students had a catered lunch of pasta alla napoletana, arancini balls, schnitzel, pizza slices and a classic tiramisù to finish it all off on a sweet note. The only thing missing was un espresso to wash it all down!
During the lunch, Italian music was played and the students were able to take full advantage of various props to create photographic memories of the event with their friends. A great way to wish Italy Buon compleanno!

Year 9 - The Selfie Project
Year 9 were fortunate enough to have Sarah Alderton from Mindfit Edu come to the College on Tuesday, May 30 and present a two hour workshop, tapping into some pertinent issues that the girls are currently facing.
A range of topics were explored, including self acceptance, how students treat others and the impact of these interactions, how to deal with moments of stress or anxiousness, and realising that they are beautiful individuals who have much to offer; that they are enough! They explored ways to deal with stress and were given some strategies including box breathing. Sarah also discussed the 90 second cycle between something happening and choosing an action to take.
"Between stimulus and response, an event and the action we take, there is a cyclical process where our thoughts and feelings process the information to make sense of what has happened. This happens instantaneously, most of the time, we aren't even aware that it's happening. As the information is being processed, we have an emotional response that will only last 90 seconds before needing more stimulus. So what does that mean? Have you ever been crying, and the crying comes to an end, but you don't quite feel like you're finished, so you think about the thing that made you cry, and you start to cry all over again? That is your 90 second feedback loop ending, and you restarting it by rethinking about the thing that made you cry! This knowledge is powerful because it means that we can choose to break this cycle by sitting with the discomfort for 90 seconds and then doing something productive like going for a walk, or practicing some deep breathing, to break the stress cycle, get us out of this loop."
The students got a lot out of this, saying the following:
"It was really helpful because of all the assessments that are coming and how teachers are beginning to write reports, it can be a really stressful and anxious time and Sarah really helped with giving people strategies to help us. She was really relatable and she was very chill and funny this was actually a really good talk for us." - Gisele Corbo
"This session was engaging and fun, the person running it was really nice and energetic! This experience will positively impact my life as it taught me about self love and compassion. The interactive parts of this session were exciting to do, from the charades to saying positive things about yourself and others. We reflected on memories that have happened in our life as well as skills to help us handle stress and anxiety!" - Tilly Daken
"The programme was great and helped tips for mental health, which i think in young teens need to be focused on more. This gave awesome tips that I know some people would use." - Anonymous.
"This workshop was helpful as it provided a better understanding towards the thought of accepting ourselves as a sense of an important person and how we are enough as ourselves. The workshop provided more depth into our physiological health and what effective strategies to implement to keep us and our minds healthy." - Mandy Carmody
"I like how it showed girls the impact of what they say, as well as how we can learn to control what we say and its effect. I like how it showed me I am enough." - Anonymous
"It was a very inspiring session and I loved it." - Anonymous

Year 10 Newman English - Macbeth
Sport for Jove’s Macbeth - an immersive experience
On Friday the 2nd of June, the Year 10 cohort attended a spectacular performance of Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’ performed by Sport for Jove held at the Seymour Center in Chippendale. Students were able to immerse themselves in Shakespeare’s iconic tragedy, bearing witness to the impulsive and tyrannical actions of the titled character in his bid to become, and remain, King, going to extreme lengths in order to fulfil his ‘destiny’. The play was sensational, as the bold lighting, breathtaking set and engaging acting came together in order to create a captivating theatre experience that will undoubtedly prove most valuable as Year 10 students embark on their study of ‘Macbeth’ later this year.
"The Year 10 excursion to Macbeth was an unforgettable experience where the actors displayed exceptional talent, immersing us in the dark and treacherous world of ambition, power, betrayal and supernatural forces. While all the actors were outstanding, Lady Macbeth stood out to me in particular with her compelling portrayal of a woman driven by her ambition. The powerful soliloquies and intense performances left us mesmerised as we witnessed Macbeth's tragic journey unfold on stage, bringing a new dimension to the story, allowing us to delve deeper into the complexities of Macbeth's character and his descent into darkness. This excursion not only deepened my understanding of 'Macbeth' but also ignited a newfound appreciation for live theatre and Shakespeare's works.” -Mairead McAllister (10ENGM)
“Year 10 were given the opportunity to watch a live production of one of Shakespeare’s works, ‘Macbeth’. I personally found this experience enlightening as I was able to gain a deeper understanding of the play's storyline and characters which will no doubt assist me when studying the play in class later this year. We were immersed in the play by the circular stage which really made us feel as if we were a part of the story and the creative use of props meant there were only a few on stage at a time, portraying the setting whilst allowing the audience to focus on the actors and the story they were telling. Furthermore, I also enjoyed this production because it moved through time periods as it portrayed the story, starting in Shakespearean times before moving into the present day, demonstrating how even though Macbeth was written over 400 years ago, its key concepts are still relevant and applicable to society today. Overall this experience was one to remember and is sure to be greatly beneficial as we begin our study of Macbeth later this year.” -Eva Nanevski (10ENGM)
Finally, on behalf of Year 10, we’d like to thank Mr Wong, Ms Curruthers, all the English faculty and the teachers who came with us on the day for making this excursion possible. This wouldn’t have been possible without you all, so we are so greatly appreciative of your hard work in organising and planning the day!

Year 10 - My Strengths
Year 10 students attended a follow up workshop from the My Strengths Assessment that they completed earlier this term. During this workshop they explored how they can maximise their personal strengths.
The My Strengths Assessment is a powerful survey that helps people discover their top five strengths. The use of positive psychology methodology recognises that all people have strengths and abilities that need to be nurtured.
Students were given a Personal Strengths pack as well as a Parent pack to take home to better understand their personal strengths.

Debating News
The semi-finals of the 2023 Regional Catholic Schools Debating Competition was held last Wednesday 7th of June at St Patrick's College Sutherland. Our Year 8, 9 and 10 debating team competed in fine form but faced tough competition, competing against Casimir Catholic College, Marist Catholic College Penshurst and Marist College Kogarah respectively. Unfortunately our teams were unsuccessful in getting through to the finals. Regardless of the result, we are immensely proud of every debater who competed in the competition this season, demonstrating continuous perseverance, determination and integrity. Our debaters’ team commitment in arising to the challenge for the past six weeks is exceptional. Never once have we forfeited a debate and for this we are extremely proud of each one of them.
Although this brings us to the end of this year's competition against regional schools, stay tuned for the upcoming Students versus Teachers debate!
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all teachers who supported this year’s debating season from acting as adjudicator: Mrs Saveski, Mrs Carruthers and Mrs Buxton; to our debating coaches: Miss Issa (Year 8), Mr Chapman (Year 9) and Ms Stravopoulos (Year 10); and our Public Speaking and Debating Prefect, Aya Bazzi (Year 7). Thank you to all teachers and supporting staff who assisted with driving, hosting, catering and every aspect of ensuring the competition was a wonderful success.

Library News
There has been a lot happening in the library this term and I am pleased to be able to share the following news items with you.
Book Club
Junior and Senior Book Club is well and truly underway. The students are enjoying different activities and the chance to meet like-minded people who also love books.
So far, Book Club has enjoyed the following activities:
- Creating spine labels with QR codes to promote favourite books. These are now on display in the library (photo below)
- Creating bookmarks for the library
- Kahoot quizzes
- Adding recommendations onto a Google Doc to share with others and to help inform future library purchases
- Discussing favourite books and those we are currently reading
- Debating which literary genre is best and why
- Discussion of the best and worst(!) book to film adaptations
New members are always welcome. Seniors (10-12) meet Tuesday and Juniors (7-9) meet Wednesday (Recess).
Genrefication of the library
Research has shown that the genrefication of libraries can make it easier for borrowers to find books based on genres they are interested in, leading to higher borrowing rates. A Reading Survey carried out earlier this term indicated that the majority of students were in favour of the fiction collection being organised into genres. Within each genre, books will still be organised alphabetically according to the author’s surname.
Due to the findings of the survey and current research, Mrs Sultana and myself are reorganising and categorising our fiction collection into genres. We are hoping to complete this by the end of the year. Once finished, the fiction collection will be organised into the following genres: Adventure, classics, fantasy, historical fictions, horror, humour, mystery (crime, suspense included), relationships (family included), romance, graphic, sci-fi/dystopian and short stories.
We will also have the following categories that will include fiction and non-fiction within them: Indigenous, biography, wellbeing.
Below are photos of what has been completed so far to show what it will look like. We are very excited about the change!
Kids’ Lit Quiz
The Kids' Lit Quiz is an annual literature competition for children aged 10 to 13. It puts readers onto the stage and lets them compete for fantastic prizes. This year, Bethany College entered two teams to compete at St Ursula’s College on May 22nd. Our students tried their very best and represented the College with pride. Congratulations to the following students for their participation and efforts on the day:
Team 1
| Team 2
|
Below is a student summary of the day:
We started off the day traveling on the mini-bus to St Ursula’s College. After what seemed like forever, we made it! We were greeted with a warm welcome and were ushered into their hall. When we arrived there, we were a little nervous to see another 27 teams there, 29 including us. A booklet sat waiting for us on the table and when we opened it, we saw all the topics we were going to be quizzed on. One topic was ‘Fire’, another was ‘Gems’, and there was even a topic on ‘Hats’! We were allowed to choose one of the topics for a double points round, so we chose ‘Harry Potter’, and other teams did the same. The first topic began with some questions that were a bit bizarre and very random. After about Round 6, we had a relaxing break outside for recess and then we went back inside for more questions. A question that stood out to us was “How many white stripes on ‘The Cat in the Hat’s’ hat?” It was 5 stripes!
Overall, it was a really fun day for all of us, with Bethany Team 1 coming 5th and Bethany Team 2 coming 4th, and everyone winning a book. We all think it was a great experience that we will never forget for a long time and we enjoyed it so much that we all hope to go again next year too!

UAC - Year 12 students: early offers explained
Students in Year 12 who are planning to go to uni next year, there are plenty of opportunities to lock in an early offer before you get your ATAR. In many cases, with just a little effort, you can finish school feeling a bit more relaxed about what’s in store for 2024.

Classes run online 24 June, 16 July
Classes Run in Chatswood 18 June - Limited places left!
If you are in Yrs. 10, 11, 12, or you may be older and considering sitting the UCAT in the future, then this program is for you. The Simulated UCAT Workshop program is ideal and often a necessary step towards effective and efficient preparation for the UCAT.
This event will be conducted by the National Institute of Education in partnership in partnership with UCAT Preparation Australia, and MICAS (Medical Interviews and Career Advice Services).
The workshop is primarily designed to cover fundamental techniques in navigating all five sections of the UCAT test and also for participants to gain a better understanding of their own level of preparedness for the test. Over the course of the years, the program has evolved into a more comprehensive and holistic exercise, which not only achieves its primary goal, but it is also exposing students to a wealth of knowledge about all other aspects of the journey into a medical degree. The latest update has seen the program grow into a 2-Day event as the sheer amount of content covered was too great to fit into a 1-day program.
