This week, on August 8th, we celebrated the Feast of St Mary of the Cross Mackillop. As many of you know, Bethany College has deep connections with the Sisters of St Joseph and of course, St Mary. Mary MacKillop was described by her early Sisters as a big-hearted woman whose life and mission was centred in the heart of God. She drew from this source to show love and compassion to all she met. Pope Francis recently noted that central to Mary’s life was her desire to care for the poor and marginalised. This pushed her to go where others refused or were unable to go.
Monday August 21, marks the beginning of Social Justice Week, culminating in Social Justice Sunday on August 27. As part of our commitment to social justice, we are combining Bethany Day with a fundraising campaign for the Charitable Works Fund.
Each year, Sydney Catholic Schools supports the Charitable Works Fund (CWF) by inviting all students to help those in need and reflect the charitable spirit of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop.
By financially supporting the CWF, students assist the important work of a range of ministries such as:
- Catholic Care
- Aboriginal Catholic Ministry
- Ephpheta Centre (supporting the deaf and hard of hearing)
In support of the CWF, we will be collecting a gold coin donation from our students on Bethany Day. We have a beautiful celebration and exciting day planned for our students and in turn, ask for their support of this initiative.
Mary Mackillop’s dedication to the poor and the marginalised is aspirational. We can look for ways to celebrate the gift of her life by seeing those on the fringes of society who need our support.

In the intricate tapestry of a school's ecosystem, there exist individuals who often go unnoticed but play a pivotal role in shaping the educational experience of students. These people are Year Coordinators and at Bethany they are; Mrs Marina Nashed (Year 7), Mrs Katrine Barnes (Year 8), Mrs Laura Golding (Year 9), Mrs Melanie Bullock (Year 10), Ms Sylvia Eldahaby (Year 11) and Mr Stephen Donlon (Year 12). These unsung heroes work tirelessly behind the scenes to provide students with guidance, support, and a sense of belonging throughout their academic journey. This article shines a spotlight on the invaluable contributions they have made as Year Coordinators and their impact on the lives of your daughters.
Building Relationships:
Year Coordinators serve as the bridge between students, parents, and teachers. Their role involves nurturing meaningful relationships with students, creating a safe space for them to express their concerns, aspirations, and challenges. Through one-on-one interactions, group meetings, and mentorship sessions, Year Coordinators build a foundation of trust and understanding, enabling them to address students' academic and personal needs effectively.
Academic Guidance:
Navigating the academic landscape can be overwhelming for students, especially during pivotal years of their education. Year Coordinators play a pivotal role in offering academic guidance, helping students choose subjects, set goals, and develop study strategies. They monitor students' progress, identify potential areas of improvement, and work collaboratively with teachers to ensure that each student is reaching their full potential.
Emotional Support:
The journey through school is not just about academics; it is also about personal growth and development. Year Coordinators recognise this and provide essential emotional support to students. From dealing with friendship issues to managing stress and anxiety, Year Coordinators are a listening ear, a source of encouragement, and a shoulder to lean on. They help students develop resilience and equip them with essential life skills.
Personalised Approaches:
Year Coordinators understand that every student is unique, with their strengths, challenges, and aspirations. They take a personalised approach, tailoring their support to each student's individual needs. Whether it's identifying extracurricular activities, exploring career paths, or offering guidance on higher education options, Year Coordinators provide the necessary resources and insights to help students make informed decisions.
Fostering a Sense of Belonging:
Feeling connected to the school community is crucial for a student's overall well-being. Year Coordinators create a sense of belonging by organising class events, team-building activities, and workshops that promote collaboration, inclusivity, and camaraderie among students. These efforts contribute to a positive and supportive school environment where students thrive both academically and socially.
Collaboration and Communication:
Year Coordinators do not work in isolation; they collaborate closely with teachers, parents, and school administrators to ensure a holistic approach to student support. By maintaining open lines of communication, Year Coordinators facilitate a seamless exchange of information that benefits the students' academic performance and personal growth.
Thank you to the Year Coordinators of Bethany College, you have played and continue to play a pivotal role in supporting our girls on their educational and personal journeys. Through your dedication, mentorship, and guidance, you empower students to overcome challenges, achieve their goals, and become well-rounded individuals. Your work goes beyond the classroom, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of the students you serve in the spirit of Jesus Christ. Thank you for allowing me to walk beside you over the last four weeks, I want to personally celebrate the great work you do, l recognise and appreciate your contributions to shaping the future generation.

What's Happening in Religious Education
The Feast Day of Saint Mary MacKillop
On Tuesday, August 8, Bethany College celebrated the Solemnity of Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop, Australia’s beloved first saint. On this day, we commemorated the life of Mary and her devotion to ensuring Catholic education was afforded to poor, rural children and their families. In celebration of the Feast of Mary MacKillop, prayer cards, colouring pages, and find a words were handed out in homerooms. Students were encouraged to reflect on the theme ‘Be fierce to be fair.’
Our College community would like to thank Mary MacKillop Today, who generously donated over one thousand prayer cards to celebrate the Feast of Saint Mary MacKillop.
Today and always, let us remember the impact of the world started by St Mary of the Cross. Through her work as a Josephite Sister and her consciousness for the poor, let all of us be like Mary, individuals who are not afraid to ‘be fierce for fair.’ I encourage you to reflect on the following prayer:
Ever generous God, You inspired Saint Mary MacKillop To live her life faithful to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and constant in bringing hope and encouragement to those who were disheartened, lonely or needy. We ask that our faith and hope be fired afresh by the Holy Spirit so that we too, like Mary MacKillop, may live with courage, trust and openness. Ever generous God hear our prayer. We ask this through Jesus Christ.
Amen.
Mary MacKillop Today, Prayer Resource (2023).
Colouring in Competition
As part of the celebration of the Feast of Mary MacKillop, students were given the opportunity to participate in the 2023 Mary MacKillop Colouring Competition. A big thank you to all students who participated. We had some great entries. Congratulations to Stephanie Sertic, Scarlett Horne and Emilia Solakovski, who have been chosen as our winners!
The Heart of Bethany Week
Our Year 12 College Leaders, supported by the Year 11 cohort, have been working tirelessly to create a fun week of activities for all students to participate in, reminding them of the true heart of the College. During Week 5, students will have the opportunity to engage in a variety of activities, including the following:
Monday, August 14 | Trivia during homeroom on the history of Bethany, remembering that the heart of Bethany was established long before 2023. |
Tuesday, August 15 | The Power of the Heart - Students will receive a lollipop during homeroom, where they can write a friendly letter to another student. This acts as a reminder that the heart of Bethany can brighten the days of others. |
Wednesday, August 16 | Chalk on the Court - During lunch and recess, students can write and draw on Yallunga Court with chalk creating a visual representation of what Bethany means to them! |
Thursday, August 17 | Staff vs Year 12 Basketball Game at recess! |
Friday, August 18 | Lunchtime Sausage Sizzle - All donations will be donated to the Charitable Works Fund, a charity that Bethany College supports annually. Year 11 has been selling $3 tickets for this during homeroom. The last day to pre-purchase a ticket is Monday, August 14. |
I want to thank Mrs Charlotte Buxton, who guided our Year 11 and 12 students in planning the Heart of Bethany Week. If you or your daughter/s have any questions regarding the week, please contact me via email at perrin.jones001@syd.catholic.edu.au.

News from the Counselling space
Our second parent night for the year was held last week and focussed on understanding mental health in young people. Our school counsellor Simone, and Amy from Headspace, presented an engaging session of facts, research, strategies and scenarios. Afterwards the Q and A session allowed parents to ask questions, propose techniques and solutions that have worked for them. It was an informative and engaging evening!
During the evening the following “Letter to a parent - from their teenager” was read and is added below:
Dear Mum and Dad,
Please stick with me.
I can’t think clearly right now because there is a rather substantial section of my prefrontal cortex missing. It’s a fairly important chunk, something having to do with rational thought.
You see, it won’t be fully developed until I’m about 25. And from where I sit, 25 seems a long way off.
But here's what I want my parents to know...
My brain is not yet fully developed.
It doesn’t matter that I’m smart; even a perfect score on my maths test doesn’t insulate me from the normal developmental stages that we all go through.
Judgement and intelligence are two completely distinct things.
And the same thing that makes my brain wonderfully flexible, creative and sponge-like also makes me impulsive. Not necessarily reckless or negligent but
more impulsive than I will be later in life.
Please stick with me.
So when you look at me like I have ten heads after I’ve done something “stupid” or failed to do something “smart,” you’re not really helping.
You adults respond to situations with your prefrontal cortex (rationally) but I am more inclined to respond with my amygdala (emotionally). And when you ask,
“What were you thinking?” the answer is I wasn’t, at least not in the way you are.
You can blame me, or you can blame mother nature, but either way, it is what it Is.
At this point in my life, I get that you love me, but my friends are my everything.
Please understand that right now I choose my friends, but, don’t be fooled, I am watching you. Carefully.
Please stick with me.
Here’s what you can do for me:
1. Model adulting.
I see all the behaviours that you are modelling, and I hear all of the words you say. I may not listen, but I do hear you. I seem impervious to your advice, like I’m wearing a Kevlar vest, but your actions and words are penetrating. I promise. If you keep showing me the way, I will follow even if I detour many, many times before we reach our destination.
2. Let me figure things out for myself.
If you allow me to experience the consequences of my own actions, I will learn from them. Please give me a little bit of leash and let me know that I can figure things out for myself. The more I do, the more confidence and resilience I will Develop.
3. Tell me about you.
I want you to tell me all the stories of the crazy things you did as a teen, and what you learned from them. Then give me the space to do the same.
4. Help me with perspective.
Keep reminding me of the big picture. I will roll my eyes at you and make all kinds of grunt-like sounds. I will let you know in no uncertain terms that you can’t possibly understand any of what I’m going through. But I’m listening. I really am. It’s hard for me to see anything beyond the weeds that I am currently mired in. Help me scan out and focus on the long view. Remind me that this moment will pass.
5. Keep me safe.
Please remind me that drugs and driving don’t mix. Keep telling me that you will bail me out of any dangerous situation, no anger, no lectures, no questions asked.
But also let me know over and over and over that you are there to listen when I need you.
6. Be kind.
I will learn kindness from you and if you are relentless in your kindness to me, someday I will imitate that behaviour. Don’t ever mock me, please and don’t be cruel. Humour me-I think I know everything. You probably did as well at my age.
Let it go.
7. Show interest in the things I enjoy.
Some days I will choose to share my interests with you, and it will make me feel good if you validate those interests, by at least acting interested.
One day when the haze of adolescence lifts, you will find a confident, strong, competent, kind adult where a surly teenager once stood. In the meantime, buckle in for the ride.
And…
Please stick with me.
Love,
Your Teenager
Simone has also presented to Years 7~11 over the past three weeks on a range of topics including stress, growth mindset, communication, understanding emotions, establishing healthy boundaries and self care. The presentation can be found here.

Update from the Languages Department
Amici di penna 2023
Students in Mrs Criniti’s Year 10 Italian class have been writing letters to their Italian learning counterparts from Saint Mary’s Cathedral College. The two schools have an established, long standing, old fashioned pen pal exchange program in place. The exchange provides the students with an authentic and meaningful learning experience which contextualises their learning of a second language. Bethany students have now written their replies in Italiano about their family members and pets and they are ready for posting. Looking forward to receiving our next round of letters.

Year 11 Biology Field Trip to Sydney Olympic Park
On the 25th of July, Year 11 Biology travelled to Sydney Olympic Park to study the adaptations of mangroves, and the diversity of the environment. Whilst there, the educators taught us about the park’s history, management strategies to preserve the environment, as well as guided us through various experiments to examine the organisms within the park. We used various types of equipment to measure abiotic factors, studied transects of the environment and analysed trends and also used quadrats to measure the distribution of crab species within the mangroves. We had a fantastic time exploring Sydney Olympic Park and learnt a lot of valuable information!

Romeo and Juliet
On Wednesday in Week 3 Year 9 had the opportunity to watch William Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet, at the Seymour Centre, Chippendale. We thoroughly enjoyed the play, as it was both true-to-the-original script and incredibly engaging.
The performance was incredible, as each of the actors skillfully managed to create believable characters, with each and every line of dialogue filled with raw emotion - whether it be love, hate, joy or sadness. While Shakespeare’s play scripts are often looked upon as boring and irrelevant, this production made old words come to life through its humour and engaging dialogue that incorporated modern phrases, as well as the creative use of an array of special effects. Overall, the play Romeo and Juliet has provided Year 9 with a perfect visualisation of Shakespeare’s famous text, giving us further insight into the unit we are currently studying.
The everlasting nature of Romeo and Juliet lies in its ability to convey how spoken words are mysterious, powerful and the embodiment of human nature.

Dreamtime Excursion
On Tuesday 1/8/23, Zoe, Keiley, Tilly, Madison and Amelia went on a Dreamtime Excursion to the Rocks in the City. The students said that they enjoyed connecting with their culture and understanding the history of their people. They learnt about the clapping sticks which mimics the heartbeat of Mother Earth, as well as other interesting facts about the Dreamtime. The tour guide Amanda (who out of respect we called sister guided the students through Indigenous sacred places as well as showing the group where the shoreline used to end in Campbells Cove. This shoreline has since been built over.
Also, did you know that the Indigenous culture doesn't have black holes in space? They consider them caves, like a portal into another dimension. This excursion was an incredible and meaningful experience which was appreciated by our students.

Managing Anxiety
Anxiety is a natural part of being human, triggered by our body's defences to keep us safe from danger. It can cause physical symptoms like a racing heart, nausea, and sweaty palms, along with racing thoughts and feeling on edge. This can lead to changes in behaviour like withdrawing from friends, struggling to concentrate, and experiencing sleep and appetite problems. If this happens often, it can affect how you feel about yourself and your overall well-being.
Research indicates that engaging in small daily actions can accumulate to decrease feelings of discomfort. A simple practice to consider is deep breathing. Despite the fact that our body breathes automatically, learning to breathe deeply is a valuable technique often overlooked. Deep breathing has the ability to soothe our body's stress response, signalling to the brain that there's no immediate danger, which then shifts us into a state of calm and relaxation. An accessible relaxation technique to try is the 4-7-8 method. This deep breathing exercise is not only effective but also convenient.
The 4-7-8 breathing technique is a simple relaxation exercise designed to help calm your mind and body. It involves inhaling for a count of 4, holding your breath for a count of 7, and then exhaling slowly for a count of 8. Here's how you can practise it:
- Find a comfortable sitting or lying position.
- Close your eyes and take a deep breath in through your nose for a count of 4.
- Hold your breath for a count of 7.
- Exhale slowly and completely through your mouth for a count of 8.
Repeat this cycle for a few breaths, gradually working your way up to several cycles.
The 4-7-8 pattern encourages slow, deep breathing and can have a calming effect on your nervous system. It's a technique that can be used to manage stress, anxiety, and even help with falling asleep. Remember to breathe naturally and comfortably—don't force your breath—and if you feel lightheaded, take a moment to return to your normal breathing rhythm.
Regular practice of the 4-7-8 breathing technique can help promote relaxation and reduce feelings of tension and anxiety.
If feeling anxious, however, is something that seems to be significantly interfering with your study, friendships and physical health it may be time to check in with a professional.
