A Message from the Principal
Dear Parents, Carers and Friends of Bethany,
Congratulations to the Year 12 STARS - Our Graduating Class of 2023. Below is the speech that I gave to our graduates. I hope that you enjoy the memories below.
In October 2017, I was invited by the then Principal of Bethany Dr Vicki Lavorato to speak to the new cohort of parents whose daughters were beginning at Bethany in 2018 with me as the incoming new Principal. Parents, where has this time gone?
Earlier in our ceremony you saw some very cute, very young and eager Year 7 students of 2018 whom we call the Stars. Stars they were named and stars they have and will continue to be. Graduation day is a huge milestone. It is a day when all of us in the room truly take time to reflect on the memories of the past 6 years.
- Your first day at Bethany and feeling very proud of yourself as a high school student
- Excitement about wearing your blazer for the first time
- Going to Luna Park in Year 7
- Who fell out of a canoe at Year 7 camp
- Your first visit to the canteen
- Lighting a bunsen burner
- Using a calculator because you thought that had all of the answers
- Making new friends
- Meeting new teachers
- Your first PE Lesson
- Feeling sophisticated as you brought home your first words in Italian in Year 8
- Feeling very grown up choosing your electives
- Feeling cool having a locker and even cooler when the next cohort of Year 7 came along
- Times when you may have pushed boundaries now parents you probably still have these memories ingrained!
- Beginning to understand that teachers were actually real people who cared for you
- Getting into your senior uniform
- The endless hours spent enforced at home during lockdowns
- Thinking back how we all really survived the ever changing rules in lockdown
- Family celebrations and perhaps loss
- Proud achievements of progression in classes
- Thinking about your senior years and your future and choosing subjects for Year 11
- Voting for school leaders
- Dreading yet wanting to be in Year 12
- HSC Trials
- Luna Park again
Which brings us full circle from Luna Park as a pre teen to Luna Park as a young woman - such imagery is representative of life and whilst circumstances may be different, learnings can be similar and girls, learnings are really about you not testing the content in a classroom.
Whenever I speak to prospective parents, my message is the same, at Bethany we want to grow the whole person, not just someone who may achieve outstanding academic results. So girls today think of and be proud of all of the highs that you have had at Bethany. Be proud also of the times when you have felt embarrassed, alone, as if you have failed or have felt let down. WHY? Because together with all of the good, the memories in which you may have chosen not to have experienced have made you who you are today.
Our high school years teach us how to form relationships of our choosing so that each breakdown of a friendship over the years, has taught you who to choose, how to act and what you would do differently. Over the years, you have further learned about loyalty, trust, compassion and forgiveness. Today for some, marks 13 years of schooling together and girls be mindful that for your parents, this too has meant 13 years of friendship with other parents, in the early days no doubt checking with other parents if it was Library or sport day in primary school, through to checking if that party one daughter was going to was really happening and that you were getting picked up at the exact time the party was finishing.
For staff and for me presenting your stoles to you today, I have fleeting memories of your story here at Bethany too. We know that every one of you has not loved every day of school and for those who have not, today is a test of your resilience and endurance. For many of you today, it is a day of excitement mixed with sadness, sadness for the routines which became so familiar and the wonderful times you have had with each other, with your teachers and yes even listening to Mr Donlan’s tunes that he sent you each week. No longer after exams will that uniform need to be worn, a bell heard, a phone snuck under the desk or a late night be pulled to finish an assessment. Whilst you will no longer miss that list, equally so, no longer will friendships just be sustained by turning up to school, will decisions be made for you nor will you have such a dedicated and caring group of teachers in front of you each day.
So girls I urge you from today to make sure that you maintain relationships which are important to you. Check in on people, be available, give and take in your friendships and stay in touch with us at Bethany.
The Stars to me have been a group who can laugh with and at one another respectfully so, you are remarkably talented and varied and I have no doubt there will be a few significant women who will go on to make a wide scale difference in our country and beyond. In 2018, we encouraged the stars to have a mindset that stars were there to be reached for, that there are no limits or ceilings on your potential and that you truly can do anything. Remember, you are not an HSC Mark or an ATAR score, today signifies the start of your entry into adulthood. Use your Bethany education girls to inspire others to grow, to act justly, to be humble and to leave space for faith. As you graduate today, think about who you are and who you want to be. No longer are your parents enrolling you into the next phase of your life, it is entirely up to you which can be exciting and scary. The rest of your life does not start from today, just another stage.
Parents today is a milestone day for you too. Some of you may be like us, feeling a little older as your daughter is now a high school graduate. For some, whom your daughter is your youngest, no longer will you be pestered with Compass notifications and parent consent forms, no more school fees and uniform costs yet instead, a well rounded adult woman who is more confident and has a sense of the world beyond these gates. I thank you for entrusting your daughter to our care and for supporting us, giving us frank feedback and listening where necessary. It is always an honour to work with families.
So now as you are about to receive your graduation certificate, I thank the student leaders of this year group. To our captains - Mali, Maanasa, Marieanne and Tameeka, I thank you for the care you have shown to the student body, your enthusiasm for school spirit and for the time that you have given up to meet with me and other staff. I thank every girl who has represented the College and shown others what a fabulous school we are. Thanks to those who have trusted us and listened to advice and gone beyond your comfort zone because of that trust and thanks to those who have cried or have been vulnerable, this has meant that you have let us into your precious life. We became teachers to help you.
Over the next few weeks, I ask you girls to keep working and pushing yourself towards that final, final exam. Hand in lots of practice papers to your teachers and continue to seek their advice. We want you to be proud of yourself when your results are released.
Over the last 3 years, you have been led by an inspirational Year Coordinator and now he has chosen to make you his last by retiring at the end of this year. Mr Donlan has literally led thousands of students over his significant teaching career across a number of schools. Mr Donlan and I pretty much talk on a daily basis and all he wants is to get the best out of you. Just as you leave today, no doubt a small piece of Mr Donlan also leaves and you put the full stop on his year coordinating career, please join me in applauding Mr Donlan as your Year Coordinator for one final time.
Today as I see the first Year 12 group graduate after being with you for the entire time I pray that you may never lose sight of the Together in Together We Grow, I can honestly say that together we have all grown over the last 6 years and I look forward to you spreading the Together and graduate as women of outstanding faith, intellect and character. Year 12 Stars may you always keep a little piece of Bethany in your heart.

From the Assistant Principal
A lot has happened in Term 3. We’ve learned a lot, had excursions, retreat days, guest speakers, exam blocks and finalised electives for Years 8 and 10. We’ve celebrated our talented students at events like the Bethany Art and Design Showcase and watched the most amazing dancers, actors and musicians perform their HSC pieces for their parents and teachers.
What a wonderful term it was, finishing with a beautiful farewell to our Year 12 students. They’ve been excellent role models to our students and have led the College with great heart. I wish them all the best in their exams and in the future.
Tell Them From Me
As you know, we surveyed our students about how things are going for them across a range of areas, particularly social and emotional and learning outcomes.
Bethany students feel:
- They have someone they can trust here at school and have positive relationships with each other.
- They have advocates for them outside of school.
- They have a strong sense of our Catholic faith and values.
- They are intellectually engaged in their learning and lessons are relevant to their world.
- They are motivated.
There are areas for us to focus on as a school. It was interesting to see that a number of students lacked confidence in their skills, even though they feel they put effort into their work. A number of students identified as feeling anxious about school and whilst this group is smaller than 2022, it is still an area to work on. We will look to ways of improving in these areas in 2024.
Again, thank you to our students for completing this survey. Their voice is an important part of school improvement.
Term 4
When students return to school on Monday October 9, they will be in their summer uniform. Please take time over the holidays to make sure uniforms fit and are an appropriate length. Please ensure any significant changes to your daughter’s grooming can be fixed before school returns.
Mobile Phones and Digital Devices
As mentioned in previous newsletters, Sydney Catholic Schools has implemented a new Student use of Digital Devices and Online Services Policy and this comes into place at the start of Term 4.
For forward planning, There is a staff development day planned for Tuesday October 31. Tuesday December 12 will be our College Semester 2, Awards Assembly for students in Years 7 - 11. Students will be dismissed at 1.00pm on this day. Parent / Teacher / Student interviews will take place on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, December 13 - 15. Monday December 18 is a staff development day.
Have a safe and restful break.

Graduation Mass
With our hearts full of pride and joy, we came together to reflect on the remarkable success of our graduating class of 2023 at our annual Graduation Mass. It was a reverent occasion that marked the culmination of our students’ secondary education journey and celebrated their readiness to take on the world, outside the four walls of our College.
The Mass highlighted the incredible sense of community that defines our school. Witnessing parents' support and pride, teachers' guidance and mentorship, and fellow students' unwavering friendship.
As the Graduating class embark on their individual journeys, we want to extend our warmest congratulations and best wishes to each of them. Their secondary education may have concluded, but their futures are filled with promise and potential. As a community, we pray that their Catholic faith guides them in whatever path they choose and that the College motto is engrained in their hearts so that they can act justly, love tenderly and walk humbly with their God (Micah 6:8)
Staff Spirituality Day
In our ever-busy lives, pausing, reflecting, and nurturing our spiritual wellbeing is essential. On Friday, our College staff will be attending the Staff Spirituality Day, where they will engage with an alternate faith experience as we continue the mission of Christ. Inspired by Paul's letter to the Galatians There is their Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus (Galatians 3:28). Staff will attend either the Gallipoli Mosque in Auburn, Emmanuel Synagogue in Woolhara, Sri Venkateswara Hindu Temple in Helensburgh or Kadampa Meditation Centre in Surry Hills.
We pray that the day will be enriching for our staff and that they can bring their newfound spiritual knowledge into the classroom to continue teaching unity, tolerance and love for all religious traditions. We are grateful to have a team of dedicated educators who understand the power of spirituality in education and who are committed to providing our students with a holistic education.
Life Month 2023
Our College prides itself on our Catholic identity and ethos. The Sisters of Saint Joseph’s make up part of our dual charism, which binds our College together. In Celebration of Life Month, Sydney Catholic Schools offered our Year 12 Studies in Catholic Thought students the opportunity to listen to Sr Margaret Ng rsj. Sr Margaret shared her knowledge and passion on the topic of human trafficking, which aligns with the Studies in Catholic Thought syllabus, demonstrating the lived reality of the Catholic Church’s response to contemporary issues.
We thank Sr Margaret for taking the time to come and speak to our students on such a sensitive and contemporary topic. The College looks forward to continuing our flourishing relationship with the Josephite Sisters into the future.

Higher School Certificate (HSC)
The HSC is fast approaching and we know your daughters are preparing well for their upcoming examinations. The HSC written examinations start on Wednesday the 11th of October and the timetable can be found here.
Below is an article outlining useful tips and suggestions for parents supporting their children through these examinations.
Surviving Year 12 exams: a ‘study guide’ for parents
Taken from - https://www.impact.acu.edu.au/study/surviving-the-hsc-a-study-guide-for-parents
Author: Menios Constantinou
For many Year 12 students, final exams can seem like a cruel form of torture. But it need not be so agonising. Here’s how you can minimise the pain for your studying teens.
Any parent who has had a child go through Year 12 will tell you it’s a tough year. The stakes are high and the pressure cooker environment can affect your child’s performance, stress them out and leave them wishing they could find a hole to crawl into. And in many cases you, the parents, experience similar levels of anxiety. So, how can you help students do their best, and get through the year? Here are our tips:
Give them a calm, supportive environment
A freaked-out child can lead to a chaotic household, especially in the lead-up to the gruelling final exams, which are crucial for getting a university placement. Give your teen space to study and as much quiet as possible. If it’s the day before an exam, put the hammer drill away, Mr and Mrs DIY - those family photos can be hung on another day.
Help them plan it
As the old adage goes, “A goal without a plan is just a wish.” Whether it’s a time management app or an old-school calendar on the fridge, or their bedroom wall, your child will benefit from creating a schedule and sticking to it. This means making time for study, family and work commitments, exercise, friends and fitting in some fun.
Make sure they’re well fed
Snacking on greasy takeaway or sugary treats may seem like the easy option for your child, especially during the stress of exam time, but they’d be much better served by a healthy, balanced diet that’s high in fibre and rich in fruits and vegetables. Keep your students well supplied with regular healthy meals and water. Encourage them to snack on fruit and swap the coffee for herbal tea.
Shut-eye is key
It’s past midnight and your frazzled teenager is huddled over a weighty textbook with tired, bloodshot eyes. Yes, late night cramming sessions are sometimes necessary, and some students prefer to study late into the night. But most do best during the day, when they’re likely to feel more alert. Encourage them to get enough rest. A good night’s sleep, as well as daytime naps where possible, will help with your child’s attention, memory and learning.
Help them to keep balanced
Encouraging your child to get out of the house can take the pressure off their hectic schedule. While many students choose to limit competitive sport and part-time work in Year 12, it’s still vitally important to get some exercise and spend time with friends. Sport and exercise can help with academic performance, so regular physical activity is definitely important. And even the odd night out with friends can be a useful distraction.
When the going gets tough, keep a level head
Studying is hard work. Chances are that at one stage or another your tired, frustrated child will steam out of their bedroom and fall down in a heap. It’s a fair bet this is not the right time to be stern. It probably is the right time to tell them to step back from things for a while and take a day off. If you feel like you need to keep them honest, pick the right time to apply pressure, and give them just enough to keep them diligent without stressing them out further.
Be supportive and take the gloves off
What’s perhaps most important for students during Year 12 is that they feel emotionally supported by their parents. If their room resembles a disaster zone, maybe try to bite your lip. If they seem more stressed than normal, ask them about it. If they’re constantly worried about study and the consequences of the year ahead, the stress and anxiety could lead to symptoms like headaches, stomach aches, a change of appetite and out-of-character aggression. Be extra tolerant. And remember, in the end their exams are their fight, not yours.
Remind them it’s not the end of the world
It’s almost exam time and despite all their best efforts (and yours), your kid feels under-prepared and over-stressed. Explain to them that their exams are not the be all and end all. There are other ways they can get into their dream university course. It will all be okay. Encourage your teens to stay motivated and focus on doing their best with what they have.
Progressive Achievement Test (PAT)
In week two of term 4 students in years 7 to 10 will be sitting the Progressive Achievement Tests in numeracy and reading.
ACER’s Progressive Achievement approach assists teachers to identify student needs, target teaching and monitor learning growth. It provides reliable measures that enable a variety of interpretations about attainment and progress such as:
- What students attaining specific levels of progression are likely to know, understand and be able to do
- How much students have improved over time and what skills, knowledge and abilities they have been able to develop
- How a student’s level of attainment compares with other students
Year 12 2024 Pattern of Study Interviews
In early term 4, all students in Year 12 (2024) will be interviewed regarding their HSC pattern of study.
The purpose of the interviews are to provide students with advice and support regarding their subjects for the HSC. Students will be allowed to reduce their study load to 10 or 11 units once these interviews have occurred.

When Italy is as close as Riverwood
Located in the heart of Belmore Road, Riverwood and across the road from that other iconic
Italian establishment, the Conca D’Oro reception lounge, is a portal to Italy – Roma
Capoccia. This is not just a restaurant but an authentic Italian eatery where our students didn’t just eat the delicious food. They also had to make it!
The Year 9 Travel Guides class was treated to a masterclass in making restaurant-ready bruschetta (please don’t call it brooshetta!), arancini, fettuccine, and to top it all off....tiramisù! The owner, Federico Lembo, and his son Nicolas ensured that every student
observed and then replicated the steps involved in creating these dishes not just for our lunch
but also with the confidence and expertise to give it a go at home for their family members.
Thanks to the Bethany staff who helped in the transport to and from the venue, and to
Federico and Nicolas for their hospitality and the generous voucher won by Natalya
Josephakis. Buon appetito!

Year 8 ‘Butterflies’ 🦋 Term 3 Pastoral Program
Mission Australia’s Youth Survey 2022 reveals
One-third (33.9%) of young people felt mental health is an important national issue. Almost three in 10 (28.8%) young people indicated high psychological distress, and almost one-quarter (23.5%) felt lonely all or most of the time. More than half (53.4%) have needed support with their mental health at some point in their life. While half (49.9%) were optimistic about their futures, the proportion of young people with this positive outlook has decreased gradually since 2020. Australia must increase young people’s access to mental health services and improve mental health screening and support provided through schools and workplaces.
Published: 29 November 2022
In response to these findings, I have introduced the Biteback Online Mental Fitness Challenge for Year 8 to work through with their pastoral teachers over six weeks this term. Students have had the opportunity to engage in check-ins, quizzes and activities with the availability of excellent resources to build their Mental Fitness. The aim of taking time as a cohort to participate in this service is to provide students with a positive framework to adopt personal strategies to build resilience.
I have purposely integrated this program with the PDHPE unit Supporting Myself and Others, which will assist in building a mental fitness resilience toolkit that young people can use to navigate challenges.
Please see student samples from the course below.
8PC Green - Poem
How do you bounce back
When you’re feeling down?
Reach for the stars
And try not to frown.
Sometimes it’s hard to cope
Lighten your load and have hope.
Mental health should be our goal
Participate in activities that makes us whole.
Be thankful for our many gifts
Search for happiness and try not to drift.
Don't get bogged down by stress and gloom
Reflect on your strengths and boom!
Your life will be filled with such fun
Share your good thoughts with everyone.
