A Message from the Principal
Peace in the Middle East
God of mercy and compassion,
of grace and reconciliation,
pour your power upon all your children in the Middle East:
Jews, Muslims and Christians,
Palestinians and Israelis.
Let hatred be turned into love, fear to trust, despair to hope,
oppression to freedom, occupation to liberation,
that violent encounters may be replaced by loving embraces,
and peace and justice could be experienced by all.
- Reverend Said
Dear Parents, Carers and Friends of Bethany,
Welcome to Term 4 and across the last fortnight there has been much to celebrate in our College. Below you will see our new upgrade to Yallunga Court, outside our hall. This has certainly brought a new and vibrant look to the College and has softened the area immensely.
We have now upgraded all desks and chairs across our regular classrooms with the older furniture being shipped off to schools in the Pacific with a need. Such new equipment for our girls we hope, will inspire each person to respect and value property as well as it providing best possible settings to learn.
Congratulations and best wishes to our new Year 12 2024 student leadership team. Our 13 new leaders were commissioned at Mass on Tuesday evening. I thank all of the families who came along to this Mass, it was wonderful to see such proud parents, grandparents and extended families join us. Our new leaders will undertake significant training on Monday as they immerse in their new roles.
Within the contents of this newsletter, you will read about the great success of our Year 12’s in Performing Arts and Technology and Applies Studies. Currently we have received 30 HSC NESA nominations for possible inclusion in Shape, Encore and Callback for 2023. To receive a NESA nomination means that external HSC markers have rated these performances or projects as some of the best in the state and certainly in the top possible band in the HSC. Congratulations to all of the students who received a nomination and to their teachers for the many extra hours shared with each student.
Last Wednesday the HSC Examinations began with the first English paper. Across the school holidays, the Year 12 cohort have handed in many practice papers for marking, they have studied and revised and worked collaboratively to improve collectively. It has been obvious that Year 12 have been further honing their exam technique and we have been proud of the confident way that they have approached each exam. Our prayers are with you Year 12 as you travel towards your final exam.
This coming Tuesday is the Year 7, 2024 Orientation Day. We have a full cohort of 192 students for next year and we look forward to meeting them as the next group of Bethany girls and their parents on that evening.
We are very excited about the week ahead with the premiere of Frozen Jr our College Musical. Please ensure that you have purchased your tickets. An ad for this is contained within this newsletter.
This week we farewelled Mrs Linda Mudaliar as our Business Manager. As we await our new Business Manager who has been appointed, we have arrangements for interim Business Managers to work at Bethany. Please continue to ask for assistance if you need help with fees or look towards finalising payments for the year.

From the Assistant Principal
Welcome back to Term 4. It has been a great start to the final term of the school year and nice to see our students returning to school looking rested and relaxed. The term is looking to be a busy one with lots of events and our new school leaders are coming up with lots of ways to create community spirit.
Over the last two weeks, we have been working with our students on their understanding of, and compliance with, the updated Student Use of Digital Devices and Online Services Policy.
As you are aware, students are required to adhere to the expectations of the College as outlined in the policy. Whilst most students are doing the right thing with regard to the use of their phone, it is clear that some are finding it difficult to manage. Unfortunately, we are finding that some students are dismissing the request to hand the phone in to Student Services, being rude to the teacher managing the situation or handing in old phones they are no longer using.
Students who do not meet the above expectations will be issued with a consequence in line with our Act Justly Management Policy.
- Level 1:
- Students are asked to hand their phone in to Student Services for the remainder of the day.
- They will be asked to demonstrate it is their phone and then switch it off in front of a staff member.
- A Compass notification will be issued to parents and students.
- Level 2:
- Students will be required to hand their phone in to Student Services for the remainder of the day.
- They will be asked to demonstrate it is their phone and then switch it off in front of a staff member.
- A Compass notification will be issued to parents and students.
- A Tuesday afternoon detention will be issued.
- Level 3:
- Students will be required to hand their phone in to Student Services at the time of the incident.
- They will be asked to demonstrate it is their phone and then switch it off in front of a staff member.
- A Compass notification will be issued to parents and students by the College.
- The College Leader of Wellbeing will contact parents / carers to discuss the incident.
- Following the phone call home, students will be required to hand in their phone to Student Services for a week.
- Level 4:
- Students will be required to hand their phone in to Student Services at the time of the incident.
- They will be asked to demonstrate it is their phone and then switch it off in front of a staff member.
- A Compass notification will be issued to parents and students by the College.
A parent or carer will be asked to pick the phone up from the College and meet with the Assistant Principal.
From Level 4, each subsequent time a student does not meet expectations, a parent or carer will be required to pick up the student’s phone from the College. Additional consequences will be considered by the College Principal.
Thank you for your continued partnership in creating an environment where our students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
Last term we ran an art competition to get inspiration for our student diary. The students were asked to create artworks to represent their interpretation of the College values. The entries were amazing and it is proving hard to make a decision.
I thought I would share two entries with you. One is by Stephanie Sertic of Year 10 and the other by Scarlett Horne of Year 7.
A reminder that next Tuesday, 31st October is a staff development day. Students are not at school on this day. Should your daughter need supervision on Wednesday please send an email to: info@bethany.catholic.edu.au

Year 7 Spirituality Day
On Monday, 16 October, Year 7 attended their Spirituality Day. It was a remarkable day that brought students together to explore the profound and often intricate world of relationships. This special day was dedicated to fostering a deeper understanding of the spiritual dimensions of human connections, emphasising the importance of understanding relationships with ourselves, others and God.
The day was facilitated by Youth Mission Team (YMT) Sydney and began with icebreaker activities and meaningful conversations about the importance of understanding our own dignity and the importance of individuality in relationships. Students were encouraged to ponder the significant relationships in their lives. The morning session was finalised with a role play by the young adults of YMT, where Bethany students also played an important role in unpacking the message behind the skit.
For the remainder of the day, students participated in various activities and discussions that delved into the different facts of relationships. Students also had the privilege of hearing from individuals who had found solace and guidance through their spiritual connection, demonstrating how their relationship with God can be a source of support and strength during challenging times. The day ended with a prayer session where students were encouraged to offer a prayer to God in order to strengthen their relationship with God through open communication.
The Year 7 Spirituality Day left students with valuable takeaways about the significance of relationships in their lives, both human and spiritual. The students gained a greater understanding of the profound impact of their connections with others and their connection with God, realising that nurturing and cherishing these relationships can bring fulfilment and growth to their lives.
The New Leaders Commissioning Mass
On Tuesday evening, the 2024 Year 12 Leaders gathered with their families to celebrate leadership, unity, and faith as we commissioned the students to their new leadership roles. The New Leaders Commissioning Mass, a cherished annual event, symbolised the significance of leadership within the school community but also encouraged all in attendance to embrace their roles as leaders with wisdom, compassion, and grace.
The focal point of the Mass was the commissioning of the new leaders. These students, selected by their peers, were presented with a badge and a notebook to symbolise the roles of responsibility they hold and the grand plans that will come to fruition in 2024. Solidified through their declaration of commitment to lead with integrity, humility, and a sense of purpose, the 2024 Leaders have been called to lead just as Jesus did - to be leaders that are countercultural, compassionate, welcoming and just to all they encounter.

Year 12 2024 Pattern of Study Interviews
The incoming HSC class of 2024 had the opportunity to meet with their teachers on Monday to discuss their HSC pattern of study. Students were well prepared for the interviews and were receptive to the feedback provided to them. Students are now able to make adjustments to their pattern of study, including dropping units. Our advice, based on various research, is that students maintain a 10 or 11 unit program throughout the HSC year. This provides ample study time and can allow students to better manage their time.
Year 8 and 10 Subject Changes
Students in Year 8 and 10 have been provided with their elective choices for 2024. Elective classes that are running have been created based on the demand from students. Over the past week students have been given the opportunity to change their choice. We encourage families to discuss any proposed change with their daughters.
Study Skills
The importance of study in preparing for assessments and classes cannot be overstated. Through diligent study, students not only absorb the necessary information but also develop crucial analytical and problem-solving abilities. Study is the bridge that connects our learning experiences with our assessment performance, reducing stress, and enhancing our chances of success. It is a proactive commitment to personal growth, accountability, and achieving our academic goals. Below are some top studying tips from Study Skills handbook. All students also have access to a range of fantastic resources which can help with organsiation and study preparation. The Bethany username and password is located at the bottom of the article.

Wellbeing News
Students at Bethany were involved in some interesting initiatives in the last weeks of Term Three:
Attendance Avengers
Year 12 were very pleased to be announced the cohort winner of the Attendance competition this term. Their average attendance throughout the term was 94.35% which is an excellent result! The students were treated to a pizza lunch in their last week of school. Thanks to all the Year 12 helpers who jumped in and generously offered their time to assist in the pizza distribution. Term Four brings a new slant on the competition - which pastoral class has the highest attendance for the term?
The Great Debate
“Students should wear a uniform to school” was the hotly contested topic at the inaugural Bethany Student vs Staff debate in Week 8 of Term 3. The affirmative team of Mali Boyd, Grace Smith and Aya Bazzi put forward arguments as to why the uniform is necessary and what students gain by wearing it, such as safety, following the rules and cost of other clothes. However, the adjudication team (consisting of Maanasa Akula, Jacinta Kumcevski, Ms Saveski and Ms Issa) decided that the Staff team of Ms Woo, Mr Chapman and Mr Kipriotis provided the more rigorous argument in support of students NOT wearing a uniform. A huge crowd of students turned out in the hall to watch this lively, fun and entertaining lunchtime activity - congrats to all involved!
Nursing home visit
Year 12 student leader Grace Smith recently organised a group of Year 12 students (Connie Kartambis, Janna Mobellan, Amy Dambiec and Grace) to visit the residents of Bupa Nursing Home, located just next door to Bethany. The seniors were overwhelmingly appreciative of the visit by our students, and staff were wonderful in taking us around the various rooms and introducing us to the residents. Connie even had an animated chat in Greek with a lady who was so grateful to have a conversation in her first language. We aim to make this a more regular initiative in the future.
RUOK? Day
Students engaged in activities in their pastoral classes during the week of RU OK? Day this year in September. Some of these were ideas on how to ask a friend if they are ok or identifying if a friend or family member may be struggling. They also completed a voluntary survey where various questions aimed to check in on how they were going and if they had any concerns about themselves or their friends. Such important conversations and skills to teach adolescents. Ceanna in Year 8 even baked yummy cookies too!!!
The International day of the girl is held around the world each year on October 11. This year students were given the opportunity to view videos of the lives of girls from different countries around the world and to reflect on the privileges that girls have in Australia. We also investigated the journey of women’s rights in Australia.

Bethany Goes to the Italian Film Festival - 5 Stars!
If you could review a school excursion to the movies, then this would get a 5-star rating. It had action (flat tyre on bus!), drama (will we make it??) and romance (the actual movie we watched). The food at Bar Italia also added to the experience.
The students from the Yr 10 and Yr 11 Italian classes enjoyed watching the movie Noi Anni Luce / Supernova (okay, it was a bit slow in parts…) and having the entire cinema to ourselves gave that exclusive feel to the whole experience. It was a wonderful opportunity for the students to be immersed in an Italian-speaking environment with the reassurance of the English subtitles to help along the way.
A trip to Leichhardt is incomplete without a gastronomical element. This was achieved with the outdoor garden lunch experience at Bar Italia in Norton Street. Students chose from authentic pizzas to handmade pasta dishes and then the renowned gelato to round it all off. No matter what your rating system, this was definitely Molto bene!

One Parish, One Family Sports Day
On Friday , 13th October, Bethany’s Year 9 and 10 PASS classes were invited to participate in a sports day for Saint Raphael’s and Mater Dei called One Parish, One One Family. Our role on the day was to assist with coaching the Primary School children in a range of different sports. It was so fulfilling and enlightening to have had the experience to watch the joy in the children’s faces when playing the games and the enthusiasm that was felt all around. Bethany students honed their skills in coaching through assertive tones, teamwork and organization developed from completing a coaching unit earlier this term. All the classes participated in sports with unwavering energy, attention and cohesive feedback. All schools involved walked away from the day satisfied, fulfilled and with new knowledge of sports skills and games.
Thank you to St Raphael’s and Mater Dei for inviting us to help you run your sports day.

Year 7 Symbio Wildlife Park Excursion
On Tuesday the 22nd of September, Year 7 explored Symbio National Wildlife Park in Helensburgh. The intention of the excursion was to further advance their classification skills and learn about the adaptations of various animals at the wildlife park.
When students first arrived, the rangers put on an animal show, where they were shown a collection of animals, including a juvenile alligator, ringtail possum, tawny frogmouth and Burmese python. Each animal was described in detail including the adaptations and the special survival features.
The students then explored the park in smaller groups with the assistance of a ranger. They got to see a wide variety of animals, from dingoes to koalas and goats. For most students, the highlight of the trip was definitely the kangaroo petting experience.
The students and teachers both had a great day and it was an effective way to relate real world experiences to the science curriculum.
