A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
For All Future Generations
In 2023 Caritas Australia has retained the 2022 theme of “For All Future Generations”. How can this be relevant and meaningful at Bethany? On Ash Wednesday at each liturgy, students viewed through the power of story, 4 people including 1 indigenous young woman in Australia, and how they were helping future generations despite significant setbacks such as poverty and limited access to education. Donating to Project Compassion is a tangible way to see how our donations can impact future generations. Besides money, what else can we do at Bethany? Each girl is encouraged to think beyond themselves for the impact that their actions may have on future generations. This may be in the form of becoming more conscious of environmental impacts on Earth such as recycling, purchasing products which are kinder to the environment and do not encourage labour practices which are unethical. Almsgiving is always a focus in Lent and rather than focus on giving up, what can each girl give? This could be giving time, sacrificing items aside from the usual chocolate or soft drink, perhaps visiting grandparents more often, doing more jobs around the house or having a conscious practice of being kind. Our words, our actions and our habits shape us and in turn future generations. How can we look beyond now and plan for a positive future for the generations ahead?
Open Day
Please pass on the word of our Open Day this coming Wednesday from 3.30 - 6.30pm. Enrolments are now open for Year 7 2025 and other year groups as well. Applications require 2 preferences of a Sydney Catholic School. As a school of choice for many years, if you know that Bethany is definitely the school for your daughter, then please list Bethany as your first choice so as to hopefully avoid disappointment. If you already have a daughter at Bethany and another currently in Year 5, your enrolment application is due with everyone else by March 31. I will be speaking at Open Day at 4.45pm.
Resilience
Over the last 4 weeks I have been proud to watch so many girls try out for teams such as for sport, public speaking, SRC, Open Day and the upcoming musical auditions. It has been pleasing to watch each girl take the risk of possibly not making it yet still they stayed strong. This is exactly what we ask of each girl. Yesterday at Touch Football, our junior team had 5 players, one player short due to the State Touch Football Titles in Coffs Harbour where many of our players were. The juniors played against another school who had an entire other team’s worth of reserves. Our juniors ran and tried and ran some more and despite being tired they ended the match with a 2 all draw. Similarly, our Senior Team had 6 players but no reserves and the opposition again had many reserves. The seniors were very tired and puffed and stood equal with the opposition at 1 all until the last few minutes when the opposition scored a couple more times. Watching these games made me feel so proud of their efforts and was another reminder of the power of working together, wanting to be proud of themselves as a team and listening to their coaches. Thanks to each girl so far this term for your resilience.

From the Assistant Principal
This week I wanted to write about two major events on our calendar that are taking place next week.
The 2023 Bethany Open Day will be held next Wednesday March 1 from 3.30pm - 6.30pm, providing a wonderful opportunity for us to showcase our College and all that it offers to prospective and existing families.
There has been a huge response from our students who wanted to give of their time and volunteer to help with Open Day. With about 300 volunteers, and a long list of students on a waiting list to help, I’m reminded of the generosity of our girls. All girls who are volunteering, need to be in their full school uniform including blazers.
Students who are not assisting with Open Day will be dismissed from school at 12.30pm. Buses will depart for Hurstville from Croydon Rd and for Wednesday only, students who catch the 947 from Hurstville Public School towards Ramsgate, will be able to catch the bus from Croydon Rd as well. The Rockdale bus will depart as usual from Forest Rd.
Please be advised that whilst there will be no formal lessons between 12.30pm and 3pm, there will be supervision provided for any student who wishes to remain at school and is not involved in Open Day. If you require supervision for your daughter please contact the College via email on info@bethanyhurstville.edu.au. The normal school buses will operate at 3.00pm for any students who remain at the College for supervision.
For the first time in two years, we will get to have our College Swimming Carnival. This will be held at Botany Pool. Students will need to be at school by 8.30am and after the Homeroom roll has been marked, they will be bused to the pool. Students will be back at school by 3.00pm for their normal dismissal. There are limited canteen facilities at the venue, so please ensure your child has food and drink supplies for the day. Students are permitted to wear their House colours or dress up to school and to the venue but no crepe paper or coloured dyes for hair or clothes is allowed. Students must swim in a one-piece costume or have a rash vest that covers their costume.
If it is raining on the day of the carnival, it will not be cancelled as there is sufficient undercover shelter for students to stay out of the rain. Finally, if you would like to attend the carnival and take your daughter home with you at the end of the day, please send a note to their Year Coordinator prior to Tuesday to make this arrangement ahead of time. Please be aware that students will only be allowed to go home with their parents or carers.
We’re really looking forward to the day and it promises to be a wonderful community day for Bethany. Please encourage your daughters to participate by wearing their House colours or dressing up in the theme of the day.

What's Happening in Religious Education
Lent 2023
On Tuesday 21 February our Lenten preparations began. Shrove Tuesday immediately precedes Ash Wednesday which marks the beginning of the Season of Lent. Shrove Tuesday has its origins in the ancient Christian ritual of Shriving. In Shriving, a person confessed their sins to a Priest, received absolution and offered penance. Lent was and is a time of abstinence and observant Christians would not indulge in foods such as meat, dairy or fatty products. For this reason households would use up their supply of eggs, flour and butter to make pancakes. All foods that could not be consumed during the subsequent forty days would be eaten on Shrove Tuesday. Thank you to Miss Jones, Assistant Leader of Religious Education and Mission and Youth Ministry Coordinator, and the Student Leadership Team for their organisation of pancake sales on Tuesday morning.
As we commenced our Lenten journeys on Wednesday, we recalled the ultimate sacrifice- Christ’s Passion and Death on the Cross. The personal sacrifices we make during Lent pale in comparison to the one that Jesus offered. Yet, every sacrificial action keeps Christ at the centre of all that we do and thus, draws us closer to Him. What will you give up? What will you give, expecting nothing in return? How can you make a difference in the life of another? How will you be the face of Christ in the world today? As you reflect on the questions, The Archdiocesan, Go Make Disciples Lenten Companion 2023, Spirit and Truth, can be accessed here.
Following our Ash Wednesday Liturgy, we launched Project Compassion 2023. Miss Jones is already working tirelessly with the Student Leaders and Year Coordinators to create many fundraising opportunities which began with Tuesday’s pancake sale. We ask that the entire Bethany community get behind this cause whose theme, For All Future Generations invites us to act beyond ourselves in the present to make a difference in the future of others.
Year 7 Welcome Mass
In the true spirit of welcome as exemplified by Martha and Mary of Bethany, we welcomed our Year 7 students into the College with a Mass that celebrated all that we are as a Catholic faith community. Year 7 were immersed in the Catholic life of the College as part of the Transition Program and continues in the Religious Education classroom where they are completing the Unit, What it Means to be Catholic. We were delighted to be able to share this Eucharistic celebration with their parents and families. Each student was gifted with a copy of the Catholic Youth Bible, a prayer card from the Sisters of Charity and a Bethany College badge. We hope this marks the beginning of a fruitful faith journey, pursuant to our College Motto, “Act justly, love tenderly and walk humbly with your God.”
JJAM- Inspiring Young Leaders in the Josephite Tradition by Mali Boyd, College Captain
Marianne, RE & Mission Captain, and I were provided with the incredible opportunity to spend time with other school leaders from all over Australia and New Zealand, whose schools were founded by the sisters of St Joseph and their foundress, Mary MacKillop. I met people that I was so inspired by, some my own age and others, adult guests and teachers, that helped to guide us through the four day retreat. We began our retreat at Mary MacKillop Place in North Sydney, learning the history of our respective schools and then traveled to Kincumber on the Central Coast where the group grew even closer. We explored a range of leadership skills including, how to problem solve and how to talk in front of a crowd. We were offered time with our Student Leadership Facilitator, Mrs Nashed, to discuss events we'd like to plan and how to appropriately confront each of these tasks to ensure their success. I was so grateful to meet such like minded, confident and bubbly people, it truly was one of the best experiences of my life!
Youth Mass
The first Youth Mass will be celebrated in St. Michael’s Church at 6:00pm this Sunday, 26 February. All members of the community are welcome. Thank you to Miss Jones and Mr Cindric for their leadership of this event.

Revision Techniques
Over the next few weeks students will be engaging in a range of assessments including examinations. One question that students continuously ask is ‘how do I study for my exam’. Research shows that the more practice questions a student does, the higher the examination mark they receive. Whilst this may be stating the obvious, there are specific strategies that students can adopt to increase the effectiveness of their study.
Step 1 - The Open Book Phase
Practice questions should first be attempted using an ‘open book’ to answer. Students should refer to their notes, textbooks and solutions as they work through the first few practice exam papers. The notes should provide a ‘trigger’ to spark some part of a student’s working memory. This process will take time, so it is important that students do not worry too much about how low it takes to complete a question.
Step 2 - The Closed Book Phase
The next series of questions should be attempted without the aid of notes and textbooks. Upon completion, students should make a checklist of the questions they could answer without their notes and those they experienced difficulty with. Creating a list will identify the areas that require further revision.
Step 3 - The Timing Phase
This step involves students completing questions under timed conditions without the use of notes. This could be done question by question or for whole sections of a practice exam. This process helps students become accustomed to the conditions of an exam. After completing the questions students should check their responses against their notes and identify any gaps in knowledge/skills.
Helpful tips
- Circle or highlight difficult questions, those questions you answered incorrectly, as well as those questions that address concepts that should be reviewed before the exams. Re-visit these questions in the week(s) leading up to the exams.
- Cross out those questions that have been addressed and do not need to be reviewed so that you do not waste time revisiting questions that you do not need to.
NAPLAN
All Year 7 and 9 students will be completing their NAPLAN tests in Week 7 and 8 of this term. Students are reminded that they must have a charged laptop, wired headphones (NO wireless earpods) and downloaded the appropriate lockdown browser. Both year 7 and 9 will have the lock down browser download instructions shared with them this week.
Please see the schedule below:
Tests | Year 7 | Year 9 |
Writing | Wednesday 15th March | Wednesday 15th March |
Reading | Friday 17th March | Friday 17th March |
Language Conventions | Monday 20th March | Monday 20th March |
Numeracy | Tuesday 21st March | Tuesday 21st March |

Attendance Matters
The table below lists the average attendance for each year group at Bethany over the first three weeks at school. Remembering that these numbers are averages and also the short time span of school this year, it can be seen that there is certainly room for improvement in our attendance rates over all year groups. Well done to the girls who are present at school each and every possible day - it makes a difference!
Term 1 Weeks 1 - 3 | |
Year 7 | 91% |
Year 8 | 89% |
Year 9 | 88% |
Year 10 | 87% |
Year 11 | 89% |
Year 12 | 90% |
Bethany Average | 89% |
Attendance at school has a direct correlation to learning success - students need to be at school each day to experience maximum success in their learning. And the connection to the community, to teachers and friends builds positive wellbeing which then impacts on learning. Girls coming late to school or regularly leaving early also has significant impacts on school success in all its aspects.
Kirsten Hancock (Honorary Research Associate, Telethon Kids Institute in Western Australia) researched school attendance and impact on learning and wellbeing for her PhD in 2018 and says: “School provides important opportunities to learn and to progress learning over time. Attending school is a very important social opportunity, it allows opportunities to develop routine over time, and to develop, make and keep relationships with friends and peers and teachers. And when you’re missing school a lot, or you’re attending irregularly, it can be very hard to maintain those sorts of relationships, to maintain your connections with school, with learning – all of those things going on. And the more you miss, the further behind you fall.”
I will be publishing the attendance averages each newsletter - let’s see which Year group has the biggest growth!

- Sibling Photos - Don’t forget to pre-order your sibling photos online up to 24 hours before photo day. We provide your school with a list of sibling orders right up to the day of photography, so no one misses out. If you miss the online order deadline, you can submit a completed sibling order envelope first thing in the morning of the day of photography, so your school is aware you want the photo taken and can bring your children together in time for it. Sibling photographs only apply to children enrolled at your school. Please note not all schools offer sibling photos
- Late fees - a late fee will be applied to each package purchased after photo day due to the additional cost of producing these packages separately
- Package delivery - School photographs will be returned approximately 6 weeks after the day of photography. Please note this delivery timeframe is dependent on proofing and additional photography days at your school.
- Previous Years’ photos - Past years’ photographs including sports, co-curricular and representative groups are also available to order under the 'previous years or group photo' tabs at your school’s advancedorder site when you click on the 'Order School Photos Here' button above. You can also order past packages, portrait images and gifts from your child’s unique, individual and secure advancedyou image archive site using the unique 9 digit image code found on packages you have ordered in the past.

'Newsies' - Rockdale Town Hall March 8-11
If you're looking for an exciting activity for the whole family, don't miss The Regals Musical Society's production of Disney's Newsies Jr. from 8-11 March at Rockdale Town Hall!
With a cast of 51 of the area's most talented young actors, Bethany College is proud to be represented by Samantha Kubina (Yr 10).
Disney's Newsies Jr. is an abridged version of the 2012 Broadway musical, based on the 1992 film, and inspired by the rousing true story of newsboys in turn-of-the-century New York City. When powerful newspaper publishers raise prices at the newsboys' expense, the charismatic Jack Kelly rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions. Together, the newsies learn they are stronger united and create a movement to fight for what's right. You will be moved by the power of their harmonies and athletic choreography to some now-classic songs such as Carrying the Banner, Seize the Day and Santa Fe.
