Term 2 - Week 2
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents, Carers and Friends of Bethany,
Mothers are a source of unconditional love. So often mothers are selfless and spend much of their time thinking about or preparing for family events, plans or household issues. Yesterday at our beautiful Mother’s Day Mass and Breakfast, I spoke to the community about the gratitude that we should show each of our mums and look for ways to be self-sufficient to give mums back one of their greatest desires which is the gift of time. From the perspective of our College, I thank each mum for your support, for answering the phone or email that we send, for the reminders that no doubt occur each day to your daughters so that they are organised for school, for the support that you give to your daughter’s learning and for the time you offer to drive your daughter places for school events and the like. Working in sync with parents is rewarding. Happy Mother’s Day for Sunday.
On Tuesday evening we have our Parent Evening at 6pm in the Library with a guest speaker from Think You Know. It is vital that parents stay up to date with advice about cyber safety and the tips and tricks on offer. We have organised a speaker on this topic as it remains a constant battle with some students and their reliance on technology and its ethical use. Please come along on Tuesday for what is sure to be informative.
As we delve into further learning and assessments this term, please talk with your daughter about what is coming up for her, how she is feeling about her workload and how her plans are progressing with meeting deadlines. Students can often feel anxious or stressed during periods of more intense workloads and whilst some of this can be quite normal, please continue to talk to your daughter and watch for any changes in her. Please continue to ask your daughter what she is proud of in her academic progress and where she thinks that she has grown.
As we reach the 2 week mark of the term, it has been pleasing to see the students return in a positive manner, ready for the challenges of the term ahead.
Please continue to communicate with the College on any issue which you feel may be affecting your daughter’s progress.
Robyn Rodwell
College Principal
From the Assistant Principal
The first two weeks of school have flown by and it has been lovely to see our students back at the College. Two significant events have taken place here in this short time; we recognised our ANZACs in our ANZAC Day Assembly and yesterday, in honour of Mother’s Day, we welcomed the women who are important to the lives of our girls to school and celebrated mass together.
Term 2 is a busy term and I would like to take the time to remind you of the events over the next two weeks. All events can be found in Compass on the calendar icon at the top of your screen. Please check you’ve given permission for events where necessary.
On Tuesday 14th May, we will hold our second Parent engagement night. We will have a speaker from the "Think you know" organisation, which works with various agencies to promote and educate parents and students on all things regarding the safe use of the internet. Charlotte Buxton, our Leader of Wellbeing has more information about this night in her newsletter article.
On Monday 20th May we will be holding our Parent/Teacher Interviews for students in Years 11 and 12. In order to accomodate for these interviews, students will be dismissed from school at 1.30pm. If your daughter catches the bus home from school, our regular school specials have been organised to transport them home.
Tuesday 21st May is the College Athletics Carnival which is being held at ES Marks Athletics Fields in Kensington. Students will travel by bus to and from the carnival. Please check Compass Events for more information about the carnival.
On the horizon…
Week 5: Year 7 Camp, Year 11 & 12 Awards, Year 12 Retreat, Year 10 Careers Testing.
Week 6: Staff Development Day - June 7
I hope this Sunday is a beautiful day for all the special women in your lives.

Religious Education
Mary, May and Motherhood
Amongst the intricacies of religious traditions and cultural celebrations, the month of May stands out as a time of reverence and honour, particularly for Mary, the Mother of Jesus. Devotion to Mary flourishes this month, coinciding with the secular celebration of Mother's Day. This convergence offers a profound opportunity to reflect on the significance of motherhood, both earthly and divine, and to recognise the timeless influence of Mary in religious and cultural spheres.
Within Christianity, Mary holds a unique and revered position as the mother of Jesus Christ. Her story is intricately woven into the fabric of faith, symbolising purity, love, and devotion. May holds a special significance in the liturgical calendar as a month dedicated to honouring Mary, with various devotions, prayers, and processions held in her honour. The College celebrated Mary, all mothers and mother figures in our community with Mass and breakfast yesterday morning. This event was an expression of love and veneration of Mary, fostering a deeper spiritual connection with her maternal presence. Mary serves as a bridge between the heavenly and the earthly realms, embodying virtues of compassion, humility, and unconditional love.
As May unfolds, let us pause to honour Mary, the epitome of maternal love and grace, and all mothers who enrich our lives with their selfless devotion. Please enjoy this reading on the maternal virtues embodied by Mary who provides us with a perfect model of motherhood.
Winter Appeal
As the chilly embrace of winter approaches, it is time to join hands and hearts for a cause that warms both spirit and community. The St. Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal beckons us to embrace the season with empathy and generosity, reaching out to the most vulnerable in our local community. This year's aim is to help an emerging group of homelessness - the working homeless. As a school community, Bethany will endeavour to minimise the effects of those facing housing hardship despite being employed by providing snack and hygiene packs to the Bayside Vinnies Van Service. Please note the items allocated to each year group:
Year 7 | Years 8-9 | Years 10-11 | Year 12 |
● Tinned tuna ● Poppers ● Individual packets of chips ● Packets of sultanas | ● Cup A Soups ● 2 minute noodles ● Individual fruit cups ● Soft muesli bars | Travel size: ● Shampoo ● Conditioner ● Soap/body Wash | ● Deodorant ● Hand sanitizer ● Feminine hygiene products |
Our local Vinnies conference has also asked for brand new donations of socks, blankets, scarves and beanies. Please have all donations left at Student Services by Monday 24 June. Together, let us ensure that no one is left out in the cold, extending warmth and hope to those in need.
Purpose Camp
During the school holidays Alesksia Howley and Serra Kazzi of Year 10 took up the opportunity to attend the 2024 Purpose Conference. We are proud of Aleksia and Serra for taking up the occasion to continue their faith journeys. The girls recount their experience below:
We were presented with the amazing opportunity to attend Purpose Camp 2024 during which we made so many new friends, learnt about ourselves and our faith and lived new experiences. Held at the beautiful grounds of Benedict XVI Retreat Centre, Purpose Camp is for highschoolers in Years 9 to 12 led by Sydney Catholic Youth in collaboration with Youth Ministers from across the Archdiocese of Sydney, an unforgettable experience that sets up young people like us to follow and reflect upon our faith. A key theme was finding our purpose in being Catholics, we were asked questions like, Who am I? Whose am I? Why am I here? We were able to do all of this through many experiences such as Mass each day, participation in other Sacraments, all-night Adoration, talks by the youth leaders and testimonies by our religious leaders, Father Bijoy and Seminarian Justin. These talks explored many topics including Purpose, Virtuous Friendships, Marriage and the roles and purpose of Catholic women in society today. Alongside the spiritual component of the camp, we were also able to engage with like-minded teens and through a variety of daily activities and games, we had so much fun and made so many new friendships. There were opportunities for game night, bonfires, music, and dancing and these all helped build amazing connections. We have definitely grown personally and spiritually as a result of this experience.
Nursing Home Visit
On Tuesday 7 May, students from Years 10 to 12 shared in a heartwarming experience at the Bupa Aged Care Facility, Bexley through the intergenerational program. This month's visit celebrated Mother’s Day. Witnessing the beautiful connection between the elderly residents and the young women of Bethany College was truly inspiring. Our students are to be commended on their gentle and enthusiastic approach to this program. Through shared activities, conversations, and laughter, valuable bonds were formed that bridged generations and put smiles on the faces of all. We are grateful for the opportunity to participate in this program and look forward to continuing to foster these intergenerational connections throughout the year. If your daughter is in Years 10 to 12 and would like to attend this program later in the year, please contact Miss Perrin Jones, Youth Ministry Coordinator, at perrin.jones001@syd.catholic.edu.au for more information.

Staff professional development - Cognitive Load Theory
The focus of staff development this year has been on Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) and how best as teachers we can manage the amount of information that students need to process in their working (or short-term) memory and store and access this information later in their long-term memory. Teachers have utilised the development days to understand the essential steps that have been identified by educational researcher Bakar Rosenshine that assist in reducing cognitive load and have spent time sharing and explaining resources, strategies and technology that they find beneficial in improving students retention of information which allows them to understand new concepts more effectively.

Reflection Time
At this point in time all students should have now completed at least one of their subject’s assessment tasks. Students should use this task to reflect on their performance in the task and make adjustments to the way in which they approach their learning and prepare for assessments and complete their classwork. Some great questions to sit down and talk through with your child when they receive their results are:
- How do you feel about the result?
- Does the result reflect the time and effort that you put into the task?
- How did you prepare for the task?
- What did the teacher feedback say in relation to the work that I submitted?
- Do you understand the feedback that has been given and why you received the result that you did?
- What do you feel helped you to complete the tasks effectively?
- If you were to complete the task again what would you do differently?
- What strategies have I put in place to help me to achieve my best?
There are a number of resources available to students to assist them when preparing for their next assessment task, from their classroom teacher to tutors in the library to study resources available on Atomi.
If you or your daughter would like assistance in improving their assessment task performance please ensure that she starts the discussion with her classroom teacher.

When the Going gets Tough, the Italians get Cooking!
During the final week of Term 1, our Year 8 Italian students donned their chef outfits ready to take instructions from professional chef Luca Roncari. The challenge was to create a chocolate-flavoured Italian dessert in the shape of a traditional salami in less than 60 minutes. Go!
It was all hands on deck as the students followed his every instruction and participated in the Italian shouting of instructions and demonstrations for each step of the recipe – just like in a real restaurant kitchen. The students used their language skills to make sure that every step was followed, and the end result was a delicious dessert that they can all now add to their cooking repertoire.
Thanks to all the Year 8 students who were so enthusiastic during the event and we look forward to doing some more hands-on tasks as we continue learning Italian.
Buon appetito!

Advice for students choosing HSC courses
Your aim is to attain the best HSC result you can. So, you should choose courses that you are good at, interested in and may use in the future. When considering which courses to study, explore the content of a course. For example, what are the course outcomes? Will you be required to submit a major work, or perform, as part of your exams? Talk with your teachers about your strengths and weaknesses, as well as individual course requirements, before making your selections.

Things to consider before studying psychology
Psychology is a field where professionalism is of utmost importance. Psychologists need to participate in ethical conduct, which includes all forms of communication with clients. Skills that are essential in the practice of psychology include strong listening and communication skills, personal integrity, empathy and self-awareness. During the course of practice, a psychologist is expected to encounter clients who have a range of comorbidities and may require an interdisciplinary approach. This can mean liaising with a range of other health professionals. Psychologist Rebecca Ray also discusses how to treat clients with trauma without becoming traumatised yourself. It can be challenging to stay composed in session with clients, and the practice of mindfulness can assist with this according to clinical psychologist Samantha Clarke. Another clinical psychologist Dr Tara Hickey has also incorporated mindfulness into her practice with clients, as well as for her own wellbeing.
If your favourite subject at school is Art or English, or if you’re more likely to be found sketching in your spare time than coding, then the idea of a career in the tech sector might not be on your radar right now. But we’re here to tell you that it actually should be! Apps and websites don’t just need to work – they need to be visually appealing and easy and enjoyable to use. Making that happen is generally the job of tech + creativity pros like user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) designers, who often come to the tech sector via a graphic design study pathway, combining their design knowhow with tech skills.
