Term 2 - Week 6
A Message from the Principal
June 7 - Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
The Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus – also the World Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests – is celebrated on the Friday after the Solemnity of Corpus Christi. This suggests that the Eucharist (Corpus Christi) is none other than the Heart of Jesus himself, of the One who “takes care of us” with his “heart”.
A challenge for all of us is how to be the heart of Christ in all that we do and with people whom we encounter. Upon reflecting on this, it takes me to where I have seen the heart of Christ displayed in action by our students in the last fortnight.
I received an email of thanks for some of our students helping an elderly lady at sport last week.
Our senior students have delivered catechism to Stage 1 students at Hurstville Public school helping them to understand about the Catholic faith
I visited the Year 7 and 9/10 PASS Camp where students were displaying outstanding qualities of leadership, listening and teamwork not to mention sharing vulnerabilities and collaborating. All of this speaks to me under the banner of acceptance of individual differences and a genuine interest to help others.
At both Year 12 Retreat sites, I saw students give of themselves and support and affirm others, all examples of putting people not tasks at the centre.
It truly makes me proud to think of students in this way and the above is merely a snapshot of the last fortnight. Equally these examples show the willingness and generosity of our staff to give their time to allow for extra activities in the school at the expense of time in their personal lives and with their families.
Thank you to all members of our community who display being the heart of Christ. May we use today’s feast day as a reminder to keep people and their feelings ahead of anything else.
Next week as I prepare to take my Principal renewal leave from Week 8, I pray that our entire community remains safe and know that in some of the most sacred places of our Catholic faith, I will be praying for you as I study in Rome and attend lectures in Vatican City. I wish Mrs Flanagan great success as she moves into the role of Acting Principal.

Presence and Punctuality
I thank Mrs Buxton, Leader of Wellbeing, and the Pastoral Care Team for their instrumental role in promoting regular school attendance, a cornerstone of academic success, particularly for secondary students. Consistent presence in the classroom directly correlates with improved academic achievement, providing students with the necessary foundation to excel both in their studies and future endeavors.
Attending school every day ensures that students do not miss out on critical instruction and interactive learning experiences. These in-class activities are designed to build knowledge progressively, making it easier for students to understand complex concepts. When students are absent, they miss vital explanations and the opportunity to ask questions in real-time, which can leave significant gaps in their understanding.
Furthermore, regular attendance fosters a sense of discipline and responsibility. It helps students develop a routine, which is essential for their academic and personal growth. Consistent attendance also allows students to participate in group projects and class discussions, enhancing their collaborative and communication skills—abilities that are crucial for success beyond school.
Chronic absenteeism can lead to a downward spiral of academic difficulties. Students who frequently miss school are at a higher risk of falling behind, which can lead to frustration and disengagement. This can ultimately impact their self-esteem and motivation, further exacerbating their academic challenges.
Parents and guardians play a vital role in promoting good attendance habits. Encouraging punctuality and stressing the importance of being present can make a significant difference in a student's academic and pastoral care. We look forward to a continued collaboration that strives to achieve the best learning outcomes for your daughter/s.

Religious Education
The 2024 Year 12 retreat was a transformative experience, centered around the theme, "I have called you by name." Held over two venues with natural surroundings, the event provided our staff and students with an opportunity to reflect, bond, and grow in their personal and spiritual journeys.
Year 12 engaged in a variety of activities designed to reflect the theme. Workshops, small group discussions, guided meditations, and reflective journaling sessions allowed students to delve into their spiritual life and take stock of their life.
On the second day of the retreat, students participated in a workshop designed to delve into the history, meaning, and personal significance of their names. The theme, inspired by Isaiah 43:1, served as a powerful reminder that each of us is known and loved uniquely by name.
Staff also shared a significant event in their own journey of faith, illustrating how embracing one's unique calling can lead to a fulfilling and purposeful life. Their stories were a source of inspiration, showing the students that while the path may not always be clear, trusting in God and the belief that they are called by name can guide them through life's challenges.
On the final day, the Year 12 retreat culminated in a memorable Eucharistic celebration celebrated by Fr Galbert Albindo at the Edmund Rice Retreat centre and Fr Josh Whicker at Benedict XVI Retreat Centre. Having reflected on God's word and receiving Christ in the Eucharist, Year 12, like the disciples, were commissioned to remember that they are the light of the world and are called to go and share the Gospel.
Thank you to all staff who worked tirelessly to prepare the retreat and for your enthusiastic participation. As Year 12 returns to their daily routines, they do so with a greater awareness of their unique identity in God. This retreat has equipped them with the spiritual and emotional tools needed to navigate the challenges of their final school year and beyond. We look forward to witnessing the many ways in which they will shine their light in the world, confident in the knowledge that they are known, loved, and called by name.

Wellbeing Update
Attendance Matters
Following on from Mrs Camporeale’s earlier message on the importance of attendance, next week students will be asked to calculate their percentage attendance for 2024 so far. In Pastoral classes, students will identify how many days absent (explained or unexplained) that they have had (not including flexibles, staff development days, camp etc) and then match this up to the table below.
We will be doing this twice a term from now on. It is often very insightful for students to learn that, for instance, one day off per fortnight equates to a 90% attendance rate, which amounts to 20 days absent from the classroom per year. I doubt that there would be many employers who would tolerate this absence rate. Please speak with your daughter next week when she submits her attendance percentage and continue to support her presence at school (sickness excluded) each day.

Year 7 camp 2024
Year 7 camp was held at the Academy of Sport in Narrabeen from 27-29th May. This experience allowed students to continue to form friendships and build unity within the cohort. Students were also encouraged to challenge themselves and develop resilience through a variety of activities. It was pleasing to see the Year 7 ladies embrace this opportunity with a positive mindset.
Arianne Faisan from 7 Purple provides a Year 7 perspective:
"The Year 7 Cohort had an awesome time at camp! We tried kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, archery, and bushwalking, and even made some delicious damper and constructed billy carts. We also had an activity called initiatives. This is an activity where we had to work together to complete several challenges.
We all had a blast making new friends and working together on these activities. Every night, the camp organised fun nighttime activities to help us bond and challenge ourselves. The food at Narrabeen was like it came out of a restaurant. Many of us got to try new things and some even came back for seconds!
Although we were initially nervous, we ended up having an amazing time, and some of us even fell into the water because we were having so much fun! We have made many wonderful memories together".
Mrs Madeleine Brealy and Arianne Faison (Year 7)
Tea and Me
Last week the Year 12 Student leadership team launched the new "Tea With Me" initiative for the Year 12 cohort. This initiative took place on Tuesday morning before homeroom where a selection of hot drinks including tea and hot chocolate were offered to the Year 12 students alongside a complimentary breakfast.
As the HSC comes closer, students begin to feel more overwhelmed about their studies in which this initiative has invited students to nourish their well-being and to practise self-care by simply enjoying the comforts of a warm drink alongside their peers and teachers.
The students were incredibly enthusiastic about this new wholesome initiative, and the event helped to bring the year group even closer together. Both the staff and student leaders hope to continue this initiative throughout the year, reminding all of the importance of practising wellbeing each and every day.

Starting Assignments Straight Away: Why It’s Crucial for Success
Ever leave your assignments until the last minute? Procrastination might seem harmless, but it can lead to unnecessary stress and lower-quality work. Here are four compelling reasons to start working on your assignments immediately:
- Get Your Brain Thinking About the Topic
At the very least, read through the requirements of the assignment on the day you receive it. Even if you're not actively working on it, your subconscious will begin processing the information. This early engagement can help you come up with ideas and understand the scope of the assignment more thoroughly.
2. Find Library Resources
Although the internet offers a wealth of information, the school library is also a valuable resource. Drop in soon after receiving the assignment. Reference books, academic journals, and magazines are often in high demand and can disappear quickly. Relying solely on Google may limit the depth and quality of your research. Your librarian is a great ally in your research. Librarians can guide you to relevant books, journals, and digital resources that you might not find on your own.
3. Starting Early Means More Time to Explore & Ask for Help
Starting your research early gives you more time to dive deep into your topic. Use a variety of sources such as the library, teacher references, school textbooks, and reliable internet resources. If you start early, you can identify gaps in your understanding and have ample time to ask your teacher for clarification or additional help.
4. Create a Safety Net
Life is unpredictable. Starting your assignment immediately creates a buffer for unforeseen events like illness or emergencies. A well-planned schedule that allows for the unexpected ensures you have enough time to complete your assignment without unnecessary stress.
Additional Tips for Effective Assignment Management
Break Down the Assignment
Divide your assignment into smaller, manageable tasks. Create a timeline with specific goals for each day or week. This will help you stay organized and avoid feeling overwhelmed.
Stay Organised
Keep all your research materials, notes, and drafts in one place. Use folders, both physical and digital, to categorise information by topic or section of your assignment. This organisation will save you time and keep your work streamlined.
Set Specific Goals
Set clear, achievable goals for each study session. For example, aim to complete a specific section of your assignment or gather a certain number of sources. This focused approach will keep you motivated and on track.
Take Breaks
While it's important to start early and stay on task, it's equally important to take regular breaks. Short breaks can help you stay refreshed and maintain a high level of productivity.
Review and Revise
Once you’ve completed your assignment, take time to review and revise it. Check for any grammatical errors, ensure all your sources are properly cited, and verify that your arguments are coherent and well-supported.
By starting your assignments as soon as possible and following these tips, you can reduce stress, improve the quality of your work, and achieve better academic results.

PASS CAMP
On Monday the 27th of May Yr 9 and 10 200 hr PASS students travelled to the Academy of Sport in Narabeen.
The girls participated in a two night/ three day outdoor camp.
The girls were in one big group and participated in a variety of activities including:
- Archery Tag
- Initiative Games
- Bush Walk
- Damper making
- Kayaking
- Raft building
- Trivia
- Night Games in the Hall
The students got involved in every activity and pushed their limits. We are very proud of the way they participated and worked together.
“ Getting to go back to camp was a great experience with close friends and so much more fun with a small class. We had many fun activities that we got to participate in and my favourite was the archery tag, although year 9 lost, we still got to have heaps of fun with our mates and create many memories of being on camp. Over the 3 days we had, camp was one of my favourite experiences this year and the excitement for all the activities and experiences that we all had on camp made it so much better.”

Library News
There has been a lot happening in the library and I am pleased to be able to share the following news items with you.
Book Club
Book Club is well and truly underway. Members are enjoying different activities and the chance to meet like-minded people who also love books. Students have enjoyed sharing what they are reading and also brainstorming the endings of well-known books.
An exciting new initiative has began in Term 1 - We have been matched with an Australian author, Susanne Gervay, to be our penpal! So far, we have sent off one letter filled with our interests in reading and questions for Susanne. Susanne has sent a letter back giving feedback and responding to our questions. We will be sending off a letter each term.
Launching the ‘Bound Together’ Program - Exciting new reading initiative
Bethany College Library would like to invite parents/caregivers of students in Years 7 and 8 to discuss taking part in an exciting new reading initiative with their daughter called ‘Bound Together’.
The research is clear that reading for enjoyment is linked to enhanced learning outcomes. But it is more than that – reading builds empathy, imagination and is a window into multiple lives and experiences (a well-balanced worldview). We want all our students to enjoy reading and what better way to enjoy reading, than doing it with someone you love?
The ‘Bound Together’ program is designed to encourage our students to enjoy reading but also to promote reading engagement by getting students and parents/caregivers to read the same book at the same time, discussing what is happening and what might happen.
We have chosen some absolute page-turners to get you and your daughter enjoying a book together.
Interested?
Please sign up via a Google Form by June 14 to register your interest and nominate your preferences from this selection that you would like to read along with your daughter. The library will then loan your daughter two copies of the same book and provide you with some discussion questions. The loan period will be six weeks with the ability to renew if required.
You can also gain access to the above links via Compass.
Please contact Alison Sladen if you have any questions about this program: alison.sladen@syd.catholic.edu.au
