A Message from the Acting Principal
Whether in our families, friendship groups, community groups or workplaces, respectful relationships are at the heart of people and groups being able to flourish. Schools are workplaces with the purpose of learning. Staff, students and parents flourish where there are respectful relationships.
Within the school context, young people are learning how to engage respectfully with peers, family, community groups, and in the world of work. Much of this is caught by young people as they listen to and watch interactions between people. Different perspectives and ways of thinking strengthen families, friendship groups and workplaces including schools. Learning how to respectfully engage in dialogue where different perspectives are brought to the table is an important life skill and an essential element for growth and improvement.
At the heart of respectful relationships is how we see ourselves, other people and the world we live in. At Bethany, we see each person as a part of God’s creation, each uniquely gifted to make a difference and each with a common responsibility to care for ourselves, other people and the environment.
Jesus gave us the command to love one another as ourselves, emphasising selflessness, compassion, and unconditional care. This commandment encourages believers to practise kindness, forgiveness, and empathy in their interactions.
This week I returned to Bethany after several weeks leave. In the one week that I have been back at school, I have been witness to several interactions between members of our community that have been wonderful examples of love, care and empathy - actions that all help build respectful relationships.
- I watched one of our students take time out of her day to help another who was really struggling.
- The growing donations to our Winter Appeal.
- The students who immediately volunteered to help with something when the group was asked.
- There was a visit by staff and students to the elderly members of our community at the nursing home next door.
- Our staff continue to give of their time, providing opportunities for all our students to feel connected through the different clubs they run during their break time.
- This Friday, some staff and students will attend Vinnie’s Night Patrol, assisting vulnerable people in our wider community.
It has been a wonderful week back and I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to lead our community in Ms Rodwell’s absence.

Three Domains of Success at Bethany- Faith, Intellect and Character
As we reflect on another successful term, I am deeply moved by the profound dedication our community has shown to nurturing faith, developing character, and fostering intellectual growth. In reviewing the commendations across these three domains given via Compass for the Term, it is evident that our students, staff, and families have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to these core values, which are the bedrock of our educational philosophy. It is heartening to see how our collective efforts have created a vibrant and supportive environment where young women can thrive both spiritually and academically.
The involvement of our community in faith-based activities such as the Vinnies Winter Appeal, Night Patrol, Bupa Nursing Home visits and the upcoming Winter Thrift Market have been truly inspiring. From weekly prayer in the chapel, Youth Mass, Year 12 Retreat and the Year 9 Spirituality Day, the spirit of faith is thriving. These activities not only strengthen our students' spiritual foundation but also instill a sense of compassion and service to others. I am especially proud of the way our students have embraced these opportunities to grow in their faith and to support one another in their spiritual journeys. In addition to their spiritual development, our students have shown remarkable growth in character and intellect.
They have excelled academically, participated enthusiastically in extracurricular activities, and engaged thoughtfully in discussions that challenge and expand their perspectives. This holistic approach to education ensures that our students are not only well-prepared for their future careers but are also equipped to be thoughtful, ethical leaders. The collaboration between our dedicated staff, supportive families, and motivated students has been key to fostering this environment of excellence and integrity.

Year 9 Spirituality Day
On Friday 14 June, Year 9 students were invited to reflect on the Catholic Social Teachings during their Spirituality Day, led by the Catholic Mission Team. The program centred on the dignity of the human person, a cornerstone of the Catholic faith and social teachings.
The Spirituality Day commenced with the scripture passage of the Good Samaritan, setting a reflective tone for the day's activities. By embodying the various characters, students cultivated the virtues of compassion, empathy and service.
Throughout the day, students participated in interactive activities that brought to life global inequality and the daily struggles faced by so many around the world. A simulation activity highlighted what it’s like to live in the 80/20 world and offered students a firsthand perspective on the hardships endured by others, fostering a deeper sense of empathy. This was followed by a debrief where students were able to articulate the realities of worldwide disparity and resource scarcity, deepening their understanding of the importance of working to address these critical issues.
The Year 9 symbol of the butterfly, with its transformation from a caterpillar to a creature of beauty, served as a powerful metaphor for our Year 9 students as they reflected on their role in promoting their value justice. Just as the butterfly undergoes a significant metamorphosis, our students are encouraged to embrace personal growth, committing themselves to acts of justice and the pursuit of peace. The symbol of the butterfly is a reminder that even small actions can lead to profound impacts.
The Spirituality Day culminated in a Liturgy, marking a pivotal moment of reflection, unity, and commitment to action. Students were invited to reaffirm their personal commitments to embodying empathy and compassion to make a positive difference in the College community and beyond, guided by our college motto: "Act justly, love tenderly, and walk humbly with your God" (Micah 6:8). Students were inspired to carry forward the lessons learned, translating their reflections into tangible acts of kindness and advocacy for a more equitable and harmonious society.

Wellbeing Update
Attendance Matters
As discussed in the last newsletter, students have been calculating their attendance percentages for 2024. The girls were given a table with days absent/percentage attendance and asked to match up their number of days absent this year to the corresponding attendance percentage. This was based on the 77 school days up to Week 6 Term 2. They were then asked to rate their percentage from 1-10 and provide a reason for their rating. Congratulations to the students for reflecting on their attendance so far this year, some of their thoughts are below:
Rate your attendance on a scale of 1~10 and provide one reason for your rating: 100% Rating of 10 - This is because I have not been away at all this year 97% Rating of 9 - I have attended every day of school except for when I was sick or unwell. 91% Rating of 7 - this is probably my best attendance in Bethany College 90% Rating of 5 - 90% isn't too bad but still needs to improve as missing a day of school can impact how much I am learning. 86% Rating of 5 - My attendance is under the aim of 95%. I would like to improve from 86% to at least a 90% for semester 2. 79% Rating of 7 - I know it’s low but I’ve genuinely been sick each day I’ve had off. But it needs to improve. |
Naturally, students will be sick at some stage of the year and they will need to stay at home. However, in general terms, students need to be at school to maximise their learning and to take advantage of the many opportunities in and outside the classroom that Bethany offers. Please continue to explain your daughter’s absence via Compass, email or telephone.
Attendance to date in 2024
Year 7 | 95.4% |
Year 8 | 90.8% |
Year 9 | 91.4% |
Year 10 | 89.7% |
Year 11 | 92.7% |
Year 12 | 94.3% |
AVERAGE Attendance | 92.4% |

Semester Two Reports
As the end of the academic semester approaches, we are eagerly preparing to publish student reports for Years 7 to 10. This is an opportunity to reflect on the incredible growth and achievements our students have made throughout the term. We would like to provide you with some valuable insights and suggestions on how to support your child during this important phase.
- Celebrate Progress: It's important to remember that they are not just a reflection of grades, but also a testament to their growth, effort, and engagement. Take the time to celebrate your child's progress, acknowledging their accomplishments and the areas where they have shown improvement. A positive and encouraging approach helps build their self-esteem and motivation.
- Encourage Reflection: Reports provide an opportunity for students to reflect on their own learning experiences. Encourage your child to review their report with you, discussing their strengths, areas for growth, and any goals they may want to set for the future. This reflection process helps them gain a deeper understanding of their learning journey and fosters a sense of ownership over their education.
- Set Realistic Expectations: It's essential to set realistic expectations for your child's progress. While high aspirations are commendable, it's important to recognize that every student has their own unique pace and learning style. Use the report as a guide to identify areas that may need additional attention or support, and work together with your child and their teachers to develop a plan for improvement.
- Open Communication with Teachers: Building a strong partnership between parents and teachers is crucial for student success. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child's report, ensure you book a meeting at the upcoming parent student teacher interviews. They can provide valuable insights, clarify any information, and offer guidance on how to further support your child's learning.
- Focus on the Whole Child: While academic progress is important, it's equally vital to consider your child's holistic development. Encourage their involvement in extracurricular activities, social interactions, and the pursuit of their passions. A well-rounded education encompasses not only academic achievements but also the development of social-emotional skills, creativity, and resilience.

Year 12 Biology Excursion
On the 4th of June, the Year 12 Biology classes went to UNSW’s Museum of Human Disease to learn about infectious and non-infectious diseases and genetic change. We had the opportunity to view the University's many specimens and were informed of background knowledge regarding each one of them. As part of the excursion, we were also able to participate in interactive activities that allowed us to practically apply the knowledge we gained at school, supported by the information from our university lecturer, Jo. Overall, this excursion provided us with valuable information and interactive experiences that will enrich our HSC studies going forward.

Josephite Colloquium
“Never see a need without doing something about it.”
Mary MacKillop
Last Wednesday, two teachers from Bethany, Mrs Lynne Taylor and Ms Shirley Woo, had the opportunity to participate in the Josephite Colloquium at Mary MacKillop Place, North Sydney along with primary and secondary teachers from Catholic Schools across Australia in Victoria, Tasmania, Queensland and South Australia. The word ‘Colloquium’ (and our word ‘colloquial’) comes from the Latin word meaning ‘Conversation’.
The Colloquium is a three-day residential experience for people who work and minister in the tradition of Mary MacKillop and Julian Tenison- Woods. It provides an opportunity for individuals to explore and share the stirrings and challenges in their own hearts and lives, as they respond to this call in a new age, interpreting the spirit of Mary and Julian in the world of the twenty-first century by inspiring and challenging each other to discover new purpose and commitment.
It was a most enriching experience for all participants as they came to explore the lives of both Mary MacKillop and Julian Tenison-Woods who were the co-founders of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart. Our College’s rich traditions date back to the Sisters of Saint Joseph who first established St Joseph’s Rockdale in the 1920s before moving to Kogarah in 1965. The Colloquium was led by Sister Jan Barnett rsj who continues God’s mission of living the Josephite spirit, immersing herself in the midst of life to empower others, like us, to do the same in the work that we do every day as educators. In living the Josephite spirit, we are called to know the story, to tell the story and to be the story. The Josephite charism is expressed in the ways of being and acting. Bringing this back to our Bethany school community, we are challenged to live out this spirit in everything that we are called to do. This invaluable experience has enabled us to remember, celebrate, give thanks and to recommit to our daily calling to live in the Josephite spirit.

Free Mental Health Resources for Families
Caregivers of children experiencing mental health issues often feel alone, but research
clearly indicates this is not the case. The most recent Australian population survey estimated
that approximately 1 in 7 children/adolescents aged 4-17 years had experienced a mental
health illness in the previous 12 months (Lawrence, et al., 2015). It has also been estimated
that half of all mental health disorders in adults start before a child is 14 years of age. What’s
more, over 50% of children displaying mental health difficulties are not receiving any
professional support. ADHD and anxiety are reportedly the most common diagnoses,
followed by major depressive disorder, and conduct disorder (National Mental Health
Commission, 2021; Lawrence, et al., 2015).
Unfortunately, there are a number of factors that prevent caregivers from seeking
psychological help, including uncertainty about support services, cost, and long waiting
lists. The good news is there are a number of excellent, evidence-based resources that are
free and easy for caregivers and students to access. These can be a great first step to
resolving issues and are particularly useful for families who find themselves on a waiting list.
Over the next few newsletters, I will be highlighting some free and low-cost resources for
teens and families.
This group program is for caregivers of children aged 9-18 years and is held over 6 x 2-hour
sessions. Tuning in to Teens is a universal parenting program for parents of children aged 10
years and over. The program aims to increase parent-child connection by improving
emotional communication in the family.
The program provides parents with a greater understanding of their teen’s emotional
experiences while teaching specific skills that can assist in being supportive, empathic and
staying connected with the young person.

General
Who would win in a fight? A TAFE NSW report reveals which skills you will need most, and how you can get them. Hard skills are: specific, quantifiable knowledge or abilities required for a job. Increasingly, the most sought after hard skills will be in the areas of information and communications technology, machine learning algorithms, data science, drone piloting, information security, mechatronics, and remote equipment management." Hard skills are sometimes referred to as the 'doing skills'. These skills are ones that you can learn through the more 'traditional' education techniques and tend to be career specific. Soft skills are otherwise described as “human”, “social”, “emotional”, “interpersonal”, or “people” skills. They include communication, collaboration, customer service, ethics, creativity, complex problem solving, critical thinking, digital literacy, adaptability/'learn-ability', cognitive flexibility, emotional intelligence, initiative, judgement, decision-making, negotiation and persuasion, people management and conflict management. These are often considered 'human' skills, as they are about being human and interacting with other humans. They are the most in-demand skills because they are transferable between jobs and even industries.

Education is the Key Once upon a time, a career in agriculture was fairly limited. Reserved primarily for people that grew up in rural and remote areas, it encompassed general farming practices and required no qualifications. However, times have changed. High school graduates from the inner city are taking up agriculture degrees and there is more scope to study in the metropolitan area, rather than making the trek to a rural campus several hours away.

There is plenty of variety in the university course, which includes statistics, psychology, physiology, biochemistry, nutrition sciences, food science as well as being competent in the three main areas of dietetics – clinical, food service management and community dietetics.
