A Message from the Acting Principal
As we bid farewell to Term 2, we reflect on the accomplishments and growth we've witnessed within our school community. Many students have shown commitment to excellence in both their academic pursuits and extracurricular activities. I particularly enjoyed attending Year assemblies and distributing Principal’s Awards for Excellence during Semester 1. Our girls are working hard, as evidenced by the number of Principal’s, Academic Achievement and Academic Effort awards that have been given out over the last few days.
Behind the scenes, our teachers have been marking assessments and providing feedback to guide our students' learning journeys. I thank them for their hard work this term.
The last three days of school have been dedicated to parent / teacher / student conferences and I’ve very much enjoyed meeting the parents or carers of some of my own students as well as those whose daughters I don’t teach. More than 3000 interviews were conducted over this time with close to 750 students meeting with their teachers to discuss how to progress their learning.
Now that you have this feedback, I encourage you as parents to spend some time with your daughters reflecting on their schooling so far this year.
I would also ask you to reflect upon your own involvement in your child’s progress at school. Whilst Bethany College has a range of dedicated and skilled staff to support your daughter, extensive research exists to suggest that parental involvement is crucial in enhancing the academic outcomes of students. Research has consistently shown that students perform better academically, stay in school longer, and engage more in their studies when there’s a partnership between educators and parents. Engaged parents contribute significantly to regular school attendance, improved student behaviour, and enhanced social skills in their children.
Below is a list of key findings from an article ‘What is the Role of Parents in Education?’ published by the Australian Christian College in 2020.
- Parental Influence is Paramount: Parents are the primary architects of their child’s learning and character development. This role is crucial and irreplaceable, extending beyond facilitation to active participation in their child’s education.
- Schools as Partners, Not Substitutes: Schools contribute significantly to a child’s development in various areas, but they complement rather than replace the nurturing home environment. The collaboration between school and home is key to a child’s success.
- Harmonising School and Family Values: Aligning the values taught at school with those at home is crucial for a seamless and supportive upbringing. This harmony reduces conflicts and enhances the child’s overall development.
- Parental Engagement in School Life: Active parental involvement in school activities and events is essential. It strengthens the bond between home and school, supporting the child’s academic and social growth.
- Parent-Teacher Interactions are Vital: Open communication with teachers greatly impacts on a child’s education. These interactions offer a platform for parents to participate actively in their child’s educational journey.
- School Community’s Impact: Involvement in the school community and events offers practical lessons and experiences for students, fostering skills like teamwork, leadership, and empathy.
As the article suggests, schools and parents form a crucial partnership in guiding students through their schooling. The stronger this partnership is, the greater the potential outcomes for the student. To access the full article, click on the following link:

In other news, on Friday 26th July, we will be holding a Christmas in July mufti day organised by a dedicated group of Year 11 students. This is in support of the Catholic Education Foundation; a charitable organisation that provides support for children in need and assists them with a Catholic education. Students who wish to participate are asked to bring in a gold coin donation on the day.
I trust that all families will enjoy a wonderful term break and I look forward to Term 3 with great anticipation.

Years 7-10 Academic Awards
Celebrating the academic achievements of students in Years 7-10 at Bethany highlights the exceptional dedication to teaching and learning within our school. The impressive number of awards distributed across these year groups stands as a testament to the College's commitment to fostering academic excellence. This recognition not only honours the students' hard work and determination but also reflects the supportive and enriching environment cultivated by its educators. Congratulations to all award recipients and to all students who continuously strive to reach their full potential.
HSC Holiday Workshops
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Year 12 teachers for their dedication and commitment in organising the upcoming HSC school holiday workshops. These sessions are invitational and students are encouraged to attend. These are invaluable in providing our Year 12 students with the support they need as they approach the HSC Trial period in early Term 3. These teachers’ unwavering effort to go above and beyond during their own break exemplifies the exceptional dedication of our teaching staff, ensuring our students are well-prepared and confident during this crucial time.
We wish all members of the Bethany College community a safe and restful holiday break. During this time, we ask that you keep our Year 12 students in your prayers as they use the break to consolidate, refine and apply their learning. We look forward to seeing all students as they return for Semester 2 on Monday 22 July, ready for the new challenges and opportunities ahead.

St Vincent De Paul Winter Appeal
I would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you for your incredible generosity and support for the St Vincent De Paul Winter Appeal. Your contributions have made a significant impact on the lives of those in need during this challenging winter season.
Our students have shown remarkable dedication by coming together to pack snack packs for the homeless in our local community. These packs, filled with nutritious snacks, provide not only sustenance but also a message of hope and care to those who receive them. It's inspiring to see our young people actively engaging in service and demonstrating such compassion and empathy. Through the generosity of our students' time and the wider Bethany community we were able to donate over 200 snack packs and four boxes full of toiletries.
Once again, thank you for your kindness and for making a difference. Together, we continue to build a stronger and more caring community.
A special thank you to Miss Jones, who led the College community in this initiative.
Year group Mass celebrations
Throughout each term each year group at Bethany College participates in the Mass at St. Michael's Parish, Hurstville. This holds significant importance for our College community, fostering spiritual growth and unity. It provides students with a tangible opportunity to understand and participate in the sacramental life of the Church and experience the richness of communal prayer and reflection.
Students are invited to actively participate in the Mass, whether through serving as altar servers, reading scripture, or leading prayers of the faithful. These roles empower our students to take ownership of their faith and to actively contribute to the liturgical life of our community.
I extend my heartfelt thanks to the year coordinators for their dedicated efforts in coordinating these Masses for our students and staff.
Year 7/8 Evangelisation Day
Bethany College had 13 of our Year 7 and 8 students participate in the Sydney Catholic Schools annual 7/8 Evangelisation Day, held on Wednesday, June 26. This enriching event centred around the theme, "We journey together as joyful witnesses to hope."
Throughout the day, our students engaged in a variety of talks, activities, and prayer sessions designed to strengthen their spiritual journey. They actively participated in discussions that encouraged reflection on how we can live out our faith joyfully and serve as witnesses of hope in our communities.
Attending events like the 7/8 Evangelisation Day reinforces the importance of community and solidarity in our journey of faith, empowering our students to live their beliefs authentically and compassionately.
Thank you to Mrs Melville for accompanying the students.

NAPLAN
NAPLAN results for the year 2024 will be sent home at the start of Term 3. NAPLAN, as you know, is an important national assessment that provides valuable insights into your child's literacy and numeracy skills, helping us tailor our educational approach to better meet their needs.
NAPLAN underwent significant changes in 2023 to ensure its continued effectiveness in assessing your child's academic progress. One of the notable updates is the transition from numerical bands to proficiency standards. This will mean that your child’s NAPLAN results will look different from their previous test two years ago and their performance and growth will be difficult to measure due to these changes. These changes have been implemented to provide a clearer and more detailed understanding of your child's capabilities in literacy and numeracy at the time of NAPLAN. Additional information can be found here - NAPLAN Information for Parents and Carers Factsheet
Instead of numerical bands, the NAPLAN 2024 results will be reported against four proficiency levels:
- Exceeding - the student’s result exceeds expectations at the time of testing.
- Strong - the student’s result meets challenging but reasonable expectations at the time of testing.
- Developing - the student’s result indicates that they are working towards expectations at the time of testing.
- Needs additional support - the student’s result indicates that they are not achieving the learning outcomes expected at the time of testing. They are likely to need additional support to progress satisfactorily.
Some of the highlights from these recent tests are:
- The vast majority of students fell within the strong proficiency band for all four areas of assessment.
- Year 7 and 9 students performed particularly well in their writing section of the test.
Below is an example of what the results will look like.
The shift from numerical bands to proficiency standards allows us to gain a clear understanding of your child's strengths and areas for improvement. It helps us identify specific areas where they may excel or need additional support, enabling us to tailor our teaching strategies to best meet their individual needs.
When the results arrive we encourage you to take some time to review your child's NAPLAN 2024 results with them and discuss their achievements. If you require any further information please do not hesitate in contacting the college.
MID-YEAR CHECK-UP
As we approach the second semester now is a good time to do a bit of a check-up to see if students can improve their approach to their learning. Parents you may like to go through these questions with your child and together set goals for Semester 2.

- Do you have folders or somewhere at home to file away all your work and notes for your topics?
- Have you been working on study notes each time you finish a topic for a subject?
- Do you have a term planner above your desk where you can easily see when work is due?
- Have you set up a good study environment at home, a place where you can focus and work?
- Are you doing around an hour and a half of schoolwork most nights (2-3 hrs for seniors)?
- Have you thought realistically about whether you have too many outside school activities?
- Have you allocated set periods of time for school work (eg at least 3 x half hour blocks)?
- Do you remove all distractions etc. when you are focusing on your schoolwork at home?
- Do you prioritise each afternoon what you will work on that night?

- Do you try to do lots of practice under examination conditions?
- Have you reviewed the different study techniques that you should use for your learning preferences?
- Are you doing more than ‘just reading’ when you study for an assessment?

Year 8 Wellbeing Day: A Day of Mindfulness and Connection
On Friday, June 28th, our Year 8 students participated in a much-anticipated Wellbeing Day, filled with activities designed to promote mindfulness, creativity, and teamwork. The day was a resounding success, offering students a chance to relax, connect, and enjoy a variety of enriching experiences.
The morning began with a series of mindfulness activities aimed at fostering creativity and calm. Students engaged in pebble painting, where they decorated stones with vibrant designs and positive messages. Clay modelling offered a tactile and soothing experience, allowing students to shape and mould their ideas into tangible forms. Mindful colouring provided a serene environment for students to focus and unwind, while origami challenged them to create intricate paper designs, enhancing their patience and precision.
Team-building games were a highlight, encouraging students to work together, communicate effectively, and build stronger bonds with their peers. The empathy role plays were particularly impactful, as students performed scenarios that helped them understand and express empathy, fostering a more compassionate and supportive school community.
A unique and memorable activity was the creation of a vines mural using the students' handprints as the vine leaves. This collaborative artwork symbolises the unity and growth of our Year 8 cohort, with each handprint representing an individual’s contribution to the whole.
The day concluded with a delightful picnic at Evatt Park. Blessed with sunny weather, students enjoyed a leisurely afternoon, winding down from the activities of the morning. The park was alive with laughter and joy as students tossed around giant inflatable balls, creating a fun and relaxed atmosphere.
I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our Year 8 pastoral teachers, whose dedication and hard work made this day possible. Their planning, support, and enthusiasm were instrumental in creating such a positive and memorable experience for our students. Your commitment to the wellbeing and growth of our students is truly appreciated.
Our Year 8 Wellbeing Day was more than just a break from routine; it was an opportunity for students to develop important life skills, foster positive relationships, and simply enjoy being together. We are proud of our students' enthusiastic participation and look forward to more such enriching experiences in the future.
Here's to the growth, unity, and wellbeing of our Year 8 students!

Launching the ‘Bound Together’ Program - An exciting new reading initiative
The research is clear that reading for enjoyment is linked to enhanced learning outcomes. But it is more than that – reading builds empathy, imagination and is a window into multiple lives and experiences. We want all our students to enjoy reading and what better way to enjoy reading, than doing it with someone you love?
A few weeks ago, parents and caregivers of students in Years 7 and 8 were invited to take part in an exciting new reading initiative with their daughter called ‘Bound Together’. The ‘Bound Together’ program is designed to encourage our students to enjoy reading but also promote reading engagement by getting students and parents/caregivers to read the same book at the same time, discussing what is happening and what might happen.
We had such a wonderful response - 25 families! This reflects that the reading culture at Bethany College is truly alive. This week, the girls were delighted to pick up their beautiful bags that were lovingly prepared by Mrs Sultana.
Thanks to all those interested - we can’t wait to hear how it goes!
We hope these holidays provide an opportunity to get cosy with a book and escape to another world! Happy Reading!

Year 9 Wheelchair Basketball
PDHPE INCURSION
Monday 17th and Tuesday 18th of June
The Year 9 Butterflies attended the Wheelchair Basketball program for our PDHPE incursion. We are currently completing a unit of work called “Overcoming Adversity” This provided us with the chance to experience something new, as well as giving us an idea of what it is like to be in a wheelchair. The lesson was led by Rick as part of the Wheelchair Sports Experience NSW. This thrilling sport combines the speed and strategy of traditional basketball with the resilience and skill of its players, showcasing incredible athleticism and teamwork. This dynamic sport has significantly inspired new generations of athletes and fans. The impact of wheelchair basketball extends beyond the court, fostering a sense of community and offering valuable opportunities for personal growth and social integration. Wheelchair Basketball continues to inspire and captivate, proving the determination and spirit of athletes. As the sport gains momentum, it paves the way for a more inclusive future, where diversity is celebrated, and every athlete has the chance to shine.
Playing Wheelchair Basketball was a fun experience that gave everyone a new perspective on the similarities and differences between Wheelchair Basketball and regular Basketball. Rick was very welcome to questions regarding the daily experiences and challenges of a person in a wheelchair, highlighting initially, the challenge of using the wheelchair while dribbling and shooting was different from anything I had ever done, but as we got used to it, the game became really enjoyable. The teamwork required to excel in Wheelchair Basketball was similar to regular basketball, but you had to use different muscles and skills to be successful. The dynamic nature of the sport forced us to rethink my approach to the sport, giving us even more respect for athletes with disabilities and people with a disability in general. This experience fostered empathy and respect for the strength and adaptability of wheelchair users, challenging any preconceived notions I had and enriching my perspective on inclusivity and accessibility in sports and everyday life.

The 2024 HSC Dancing Doves - Dance Practical Trials
Congratulations to the 2024 HSC Dance class ‘The Dancing Doves’ in completing their HSC Dance Practical Trials over three days on Monday 17th, Tuesday 18th and Wednesday 19th of June.
The ten Dancing Doves were all well prepared and performed with excellence, presenting their Core Compositions to an external HSC Dance marker. This was such a valuable opportunity for both the Year 12 choreographers and younger dancers to gain further feedback on their creative process. Thank you to the wonderful composition dancers, who have dedicated their precious time at recesses and lunches, in and out of school, to help the Dancing Doves create such exemplary compositions.

2024 HSC Dance Showcase
On the 25th of June, we celebrated the Yr 12 Dance class’s achievements with the 2024 HSC Dance showcase. The Doves presented their HSC practical works in preparation for their upcoming final exams in August.
They performed their Major Study Performance “This Bitter Earth”, a 4-minute body of work choreographed by their teacher Ms Danielle Como, and the Core Performance dances, of which there were two this year, “Turning Page” and “Ocean Eyes.” Younger Bethany students performed their Core Compositions, 3-minute original, abstract works entirely choreographed by the Year 12 Dance students. The night was an overwhelming success, with the opportunity to share our hard work with the wider Bethany community, and a valuable performance opportunity in the lead up to our final HSC exams!

General
Who would win in a fight? A TAFE NSW report reveals which skills you will need most, and how you can get them. Hard skills are: specific, quantifiable knowledge or abilities required for a job. Increasingly, the most sought after hard skills will be in the areas of information and communications technology, machine learning algorithms, data science, drone piloting, information security, mechatronics, and remote equipment management." Hard skills are sometimes referred to as the 'doing skills'. These skills are ones that you can learn through the more 'traditional' education techniques and tend to be career specific. Soft skills are otherwise described as “human”, “social”, “emotional”, “interpersonal”, or “people” skills. They include communication, collaboration, customer service, ethics, creativity, complex problem solving, critical thinking, digital literacy, adaptability/'learn-ability', cognitive flexibility, emotional intelligence, initiative, judgement, decision-making, negotiation and persuasion, people management and conflict management. These are often considered 'human' skills, as they are about being human and interacting with other humans. They are the most in-demand skills because they are transferable between jobs and even industries.

Education is the Key Once upon a time, a career in agriculture was fairly limited. Reserved primarily for people that grew up in rural and remote areas, it encompassed general farming practices and required no qualifications. However, times have changed. High school graduates from the inner city are taking up agriculture degrees and there is more scope to study in the metropolitan area, rather than making the trek to a rural campus several hours away.

There is plenty of variety in the university course, which includes statistics, psychology, physiology, biochemistry, nutrition sciences, food science as well as being competent in the three main areas of dietetics – clinical, food service management and community dietetics.
