A Message from the Acting Principal
As we begin Term 3 once again we brace ourselves for a busy but exciting term.
Our Year 12s will embark on their HSC Trial exams in week 3. Many of our Year 12 students were present at school working with their teachers in preparation for the upcoming Trial HSC examinations and the finalisation of Major Works; it was impressive to see their dedication to their studies in this time of preparation. This term also marks a significant milestone in their education, marking the culmination of 13 years of schooling, dedication, and growth. It’s a time for them to reflect on the memories they have made, the friendships they have forged, and the challenges they have overcome. When I met with Year 12 last week, I encouraged them to approach this term with a sense of purpose and enthusiasm. On behalf of the College, we wish you all the very best for a successful final term. May it be filled with joy, accomplishment, and fond memories.
On Monday, we began our Bethany Day celebrations with a whole school Mass recognising the Feast Day of Saints Martha, Mary and Lazarus. We were blessed to have Father Richard Sofatzis lead our service and we thank him for giving of his time in support of our school. It was particularly special as Father Richard blessed an image of Saints Martha and Mary drawn by Stephanie Sertic of Year 11. Stephanie is a talented artist and young woman of profound faith at our College. Through her art, Stephanie beautifully captures Martha’s spirit of service and Mary’s devotion to contemplation, encouraging us to embody these virtues in our daily lives. Her work not only honours these biblical figures but also inspires us to find balance between action and reflection in our own faith journeys. This beautiful image will be used in all our masses and mass booklets as an important symbol of these two women and the Bethany story.
We also recognised six students who have exemplified the Bethany spirit, our Bethany Day Award recipients. These girls have been present to their peers through their particular year group value: relationships, acceptance, justice, welcome, service and wholeness. These awards are particularly special because if you are a recipient, you’re being recognised by your year group; it means that others are seeing you as a wonderful example of what makes this a great community. Congratulations to:
Year 7: Arianne Faisan
Year 8: Alessia Coratella-Chalabli
Year 9: Gina Boyd
Year 10: Hannah Cuevas
Year 11: Millie Wong
Year 12: Eve Bray
On the sporting front our Bethany girls continue to shine. Both our Intermediate Girls Football and Netball teams competed in the Sydney Catholic Schools Winter Championships on Wednesday. They played with their hearts and despite the losses, were excellent ambassadors for Bethany in their sportsmanship, dedication and passion. We took students from Years 9 and 10 to watch the games and they were loud and proud in their support of the players. Congratulations to our players, and their coaches: Ms Smith (Netball) and Mr Devlin (Football).
It’s been a great start to the term and I look forward to sharing the rest with you all.

From the Acting Assistant Principal
Welcome back to Semester 2! We hope you had a restful break and are rejuvenated for the exciting months ahead. As we embark on this new semester together, I would like to take a moment to remind families of some important expectations regarding College life:
Attendance and Punctuality
We value the importance of regular attendance and punctuality. Attending classes on time ensures that every student can fully participate and benefit from their education. We kindly ask all families to support us in emphasising the significance of consistent attendance and punctuality with your daughters.
Uniform and Grooming
Maintaining a neat and tidy appearance reflects our commitment to professionalism and respect within our learning environment. We appreciate your assistance in ensuring that students adhere to the College uniform and grooming guidelines. This helps create a positive atmosphere conducive to learning for all.
Opal Cards and School Bus Specials
For students using public transport, it is crucial to tap on/off with Opal cards. The statistics generated ensure that Bethany students will continue to be provided with these essential bus services. Students who do not produce an Opal card may be denied travel on these bus services.
As we begin Semester 2, we look forward to continuing our partnership with you, our valued families. Together, we can support our students in achieving their academic and personal goals. Should you have any questions or require further information, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Thank you for your ongoing support and commitment to Bethany College.

Celebrating the Feast of Sts. Martha, Mary, and Lazarus at Bethany College
On Monday, the 29th of July, Bethany College gathered to celebrate Mass in honour of the Feast of Sts. Martha, Mary, and Lazarus. The Mass, celebrated by Fr. Richard Sofatzis, brought our school community together to reflect on the profound lessons offered by these remarkable biblical figures, siblings from Bethany, a small village just a few miles from Jerusalem. This significant occasion holds deep meaning for our college, reflecting our commitment to the values exemplified by our namesakes.
Fr. Richard's homily beautifully wove together the qualities of Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, encouraging us to reflect on their examples and apply their lessons in our own lives. As a college named Bethany, we are called to embody these virtues of service, devotion, and faith in our daily actions and interactions.
Martha and Mary of Bethany are central figures in the New Testament, each embodying distinct qualities that offer valuable lessons for our own spiritual journey. In the Gospel of Luke, we encounter the well-known story of Jesus visiting their home. Martha, ever the diligent hostess, busies herself with the tasks of serving, while Mary chooses to sit at Jesus' feet, listening to His teaching. This highlights two essential aspects of the Christian life: service and contemplation.
Martha's Service
Martha is often remembered as a model of dedication, hospitality, and service. In her eagerness to serve Jesus, Martha demonstrates a heart committed to caring for others and fulfilling her responsibilities. Her actions remind us of the importance of service in our own lives—of being willing to work diligently and offer our talents and time to benefit others.
Yet, Martha's story also serves as a gentle reminder to balance our service with moments of reflection. Jesus lovingly corrects Martha, not for her service, but for being "worried and upset about many things" (Luke 10:41). This calls us to ensure that our acts of service do not become sources of anxiety but are grounded in a peaceful heart centred on Christ.
Mary's Contemplation
Mary embodies the contemplative aspect of faith. Her choice to sit at Jesus' feet and listen is a powerful expression of a desire to be close to the Lord. Mary’s actions remind us of the importance of taking time to be still, to listen, and to nurture our relationship with God. In a world that often values busyness and productivity, Mary’s example encourages us to prioritize our spiritual growth and to seek moments of quiet communion with God.
In our own lives, we can strive to embody the strengths of both sisters—serving with Martha’s dedication and loving with Mary’s devotion. By doing so, we honour their legacy and deepen our own faith journeys, becoming instruments of God’s love and grace in the world.
May we continue to draw inspiration from Sts. Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, striving to serve with dedication, love with devotion, and live with unwavering faith.

Year 12 Trial HSC Examinations
Best of luck to our Year 12 students who embark on their HSC Trial examinations on Monday. Embrace the challenge and give it your best effort. Your teachers, families, and friends are here to support you every step of the way.
Year 12 students were provided with the following stage 6 examination protocols this week. We ask that families are aware of the rules and responsibilities of each student. In the event that a student is unable to attend an exam due to Illness or Misadventure, please notify the College on the day of the exam and obtain independent evidence to verify the absence.
Good luck to all students.
AAS Tests - Year 8
On Tuesday, 13th of August students in Year 8 will complete the Year 8 AAS (formerly known as Allwell Tests) which are facilitated by Academic Assessment Services Pty Ltd. These tests assess aptitude and ability in the key areas of literacy and numeracy. AAS testing is a comprehensive assessment tool designed to provide valuable insights into your child's cognitive and academic development. The primary purpose of AAS testing is to evaluate your child's strengths and areas that may require additional attention, helping you better understand their learning progress. The results obtained from these tests can assist parents, teachers, and educators in tailoring educational strategies to suit your child's unique needs. By identifying specific areas of improvement, AAS testing contributes to a more personalised and effective learning journey, fostering academic growth and success.
STUDY HINTS and TIPS - PROOFING YOUR ASSESSMENTS
As you gear up for your next assessment, mastering the art of proofreading is key to ensuring your hard work shines through elevating your academic performance.
1st Proof:
To begin, consider relocating to a fresh setting for a focused proofreading session. Find a place that is not your usual study space where you can concentrate on refining your work. Bring along the assessment criteria and question prompts to guide your review. Your initial proof should encompass the following key factors:
WORD COUNT: Confirm that your assessment aligns with the specified word limit. Identify any excess words that may need trimming to meet requirements.
SPELLING / GRAMMAR: While spell check can be helpful, don't rely solely on it. Look out for common errors like 'form' instead of 'from' that may slip through automated checks.
SOURCES: Verify that all sources for visuals, examples, and quotes are properly cited and listed to support your arguments.
CRITERIA / QUESTION ANSWERED? Review the assessment criteria and ensure that your responses directly address the requirements. Tick off each criterion as you confirm its coverage in your work.
REPETITION: It’s easy to repeat points, double check you haven’t done this.
USEFUL INFORMATION: It’s not uncommon to write unnecessary information. Do you have points that don’t really answer the question? Have you written clearly? Is there any information you could leave out? Is there any information that you realise needs to be added?
REINFORCE: This is where you need to finalise which words you will bold, highlight, underline etc. so your assignment clearly identifies the main points. Bolding can let the teacher see clearly that you have covered all the parts of the question, that there is a sequence of ideas and you have organised the information well.
2nd Proof:
The next day repeat the above steps, but this time - READ YOUR ASSIGNMENT OUT LOUD! If you didn’t print your assignment to proof the first time, now could be the time. Reading and hearing the words spoken in different mediums can sometimes give a new perspective to your writing. Note down any changes you need to make.
3rd Proof:
It’s always a good idea to ask someone to proof your assignment after you have proofed it first. It is common for the writer not to pick up typos or silly mistakes because they know what they meant and see the words they intended to write, and not the errors. So recruit a proof reader (parent, relatives, older sibling or friend etc.) to gain fresh insights.
Remember, meticulous proofreading is a valuable skill that can elevate the quality of your work and set you on the path to academic success.

Year 9 Pastoral incursion - Brainstorm Productions - Tuesday, 23rd July 2024
Developed in consultation with a clinical psychologist and based on current research, Brainstorm's production of ‘Wired’ is an engaging, interactive live performance mental health program for high schools designed to stimulate discussion and complement your school’s existing wellbeing, (cyber)bullying and mental health programs.
The performance follows the journey of two students whose lives are spiralling in different directions: one towards stress, anxiety and overload, and the other towards depression and disconnection. The audience must help their worlds choose a different path when they collide.
Wired is an interactive theatre experience that tackles some of the biggest issues affecting Australian students, including social isolation, bullying, online safety, school stressors, family relationships, and pressure from social media. It addresses barriers to help-seeking and provides strategies for resilience, problem-solving, goal-setting, and positive mental health.
Year 9 engaged positively with the actors and provided insightful questions and responses throughout the performance.

Nursing home outreach
Our visits to the nursing home continued in Week 2 this term. The students who volunteered were:
Year 10
Maryanne Al-Tarraf
Mandy Carmody
Rihanna Saadie
Year 12
Hannah Lewis
Caitlin Kalinovska
Angel Kousoulas
Mandy Carmody in Year 10 has written the following reflection:
I visited the BUPA nursing home next door to our school on Tuesday and it has to be one of the most eye opening and touching things i have ever done. Sitting there, seeing all of the residents and watching how they enjoyed the company of us girls would have to be one of the most heartwarming things I've experienced. We sat down with the residents and made friendship bracelets and completed Olympic themed word searches and colouring in. The lady who I was sitting with held my hand and asked me if I was having fun. At that moment I just wanted to cry, I later found out that that lady gets no visitors. This whole experience made me realise how precious life and time is and to enjoy every second of every minute we have, and enjoy the company of those who love us and that we love.
Catholic Education Fundraiser 2024
Bethany College rang out with the twinkle of Jingle bells and Christmas music last Friday. Students donned their best Christmas jumpers, Santa hats, oodies and flashing earrings for our “Christmas in July” themed fundraiser. The money will go to the Catholic Education Foundation, a not-for-profit charity that was established in 2013 and offers support to families via the bursary program.
On Tuesday of this week the student leaders organised a Bake sale on International Friendship day, with the aim of also raising money for the CEF. The treats sold out very quickly!
In total Bethany raised $1719.50 for this wonderful program - thank you to the girls and families for supporting this cause.

Both teams were successful in defeating their opponents, in close games, 3-2 (football) and 24-21 (netball).
This saw both teams progress to the Sydney Championship Finals. To even make it to this level of the competition is an outstanding achievement, meaning our teams are part of the top two schools across all of Sydney Catholic Schools!

How thousands of students are overcoming challenges and gaining entry to uni
Not everyone gets an equal shot at their Year 11 and 12 studies. Life throws in some pretty serious challenges along the way, like chronic illness or ongoing financial stress.
If you are navigating health issues, a family break-up or other challenges that affect your education, the Educational Access Scheme (EAS) can help you get to uni by increasing your selection rank and making you more competitive for an offer.
An EAS application is automatically generated for UAC undergraduate applicants who live in identified low socio-economic areas.

From the College Counsellor
This week, I would like to highlight another free online resource for families:
Parent Works
This online program is for caregivers of children aged 2-17 years. It is an ‘evidence-based’ program, which means that the program has been tested in research and found it be effective in improving parenting skills, parenting confidence and child behaviour. It has been developed to be father friendly since having both caregivers complete any parenting program is valuable.
