Term 3 - Week 8
A Message from the Principal
Dear Parents, Carers and Friends of Bethany,
At our Assembly last week, I spoke to our College about gratitude. Having returned from my Principal renewal leave where I was offered the chance to study about Catholic Education in Rome at the Australian Catholic University bought me much reflection time as well as new learnings. I spoke to our students about my gratitude for having a wonderful opportunity to travel, for my faith, my loved ones and of course being part of a community at Bethany. Drilling down further on gratitude, I asked the girls to think about the times which we have all been guilty of, when we have passed on information by word or by using technology for purposes which may have made fun of people or for negative reasons. These examples can be hurtful and for the most part, we would not want them happening to us but why do we then do it? Alternatively, I asked the girls to reflect on when they passed on information for positive reasons such as posting how proud they were of a friend or family member for a particular reason. Where do we show gratitude in our lives and should we make this more of a priority?
Parents, none of what I have written about above is new, I am simply encouraging each student to emphasise the good in others and I ask that perhaps dinner time is a lovely way to discuss the good in each of our days and focus on the positive as we really do have many reasons to show gratitude.
Last week our student leaders for 2025 were announced. Staff and students in Year 11 voted for these leaders. Year 11 are to be congratulated on the way that they entered into this process as they have chosen well and we look forward to further student initiatives in student voice.
College Captain: Emily Haddad
College Vice Captains: Harper Bollard & Catherine Smith
RE & Mission Captain: Stephanie Sertic
Sport Captain: Juliet King
Media and Events Prefect: Larissa Bazgalovski

Wellbeing and Environmental Prefect: Chloe Kalinovska
Oodgeroo House Captain: Alexia Yalizis
Melba House Captain: Millie Wong
Kellerman House Captain: Claudia Edwards
Franklin House Captain: Milana Milakovic
Also in the spirit of gratitude, I would like to say how impressive the staff at Bethany are and note some recent accomplishments. 8 of our staff across TAS and Performing Arts, have been chosen to HSC mark projects and performances across the state. This has taken them away from their families for 2 weeks at a time all in the name of learning more about their subject area to best help our students.
Special congratulations to Ms Como and the Yr 12 Dance class. This class consists of 10 students. At HSC level, each student has 3 types of performances and thus 30 are viewed by external examiners. We are immensely proud to say that of the 30 performances, 15 have been recognised with a NESA Nomination which in effect means that they achieved a perfect score. This is academic excellence at its best and Dance is the first of many subjects to have nominations announced so hopefully there will be more announcements to come.
Bethany will have around 30 teachers mark the HSC this year which gives staff the opportunity to see what is out there in the rest of the state in terms of ideas, marking criteria and collaborating with other teachers state wide. I thank the Bethany staff for all of these extras and for modelling that learning never stops.

From the Assistant Principal
As we move towards the end of the term, it is a good time to send a reminder regarding some important events that are coming up in the school calendar.
Year 11 will begin their Preliminary course examinations next week. We know they have worked hard in preparation for this time and wish them all the best.
Tuesday September 24 is Graduation Day for our Year 12 students. The Graduation Assembly starts at 9am and parents, carers and family who are attending are asked to be seated by 8.45am.
Friday September 27 is the College Staff Spirituality Day. This is a pupil free day for students. The last day of lessons for Term 3 is Thursday 26th September.
When students return to school on Monday October 14, they will be in their summer uniform. Please take time over the holidays to make sure uniforms still fit and are an appropriate length.
Over the last few weeks, there has been an increase in the number of students who have received detentions for uniform infringements. Detentions are held on a Tuesday afternoon and staff have been allocated a duty to supervise students during this time. In most instances, a detention cannot be moved to an alternative afternoon as staff supervision has not been allocated.
When a detention is issued a notification is automatically sent to both parents/carers and to the student through Compass with ample warning of the upcoming date. As a secondary communication, written notice is also given to students. Please know that if a detention for uniform is issued, the student has received multiple warnings prior to receiving the detention and they have not addressed the issue that has been raised with them. These are often quite simple issues that our girls are mature and responsible enough to manage themselves. Please take this into consideration when discussing a detention with your daughter. Your support in this is greatly appreciated.

St. Michael’s Parish
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Rev Dr Janusz Bieniek CSMA for his exceptional service as Parish Priest of St. Michael's Church, Hurstville, over the past 11 years. His unwavering dedication, spiritual guidance, and warm presence have been a constant source of comfort and inspiration to our parish community.
Throughout his time with us, Father Janusz has touched countless lives with his compassionate leadership, always making time for those in need of counsel or support. His sermons have been thought-provoking and deeply rooted in the teachings of Christ, encouraging us to live out our faith with love and kindness. Whether through celebrating the Sacraments, leading prayer liturgical celebrations, or simply being a reassuring presence, Father Janusz has shown a genuine care for every member of our parish.
His warm and approachable nature has fostered a spirit of unity and belonging, bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds. From visiting the sick to supporting our youth, Father Janusz's work has helped strengthen our faith community and left an indelible mark on the Bethany community.
We are deeply grateful for his years of faithful service and wish him God's continued blessings as he continues to serve the community in the capacity of Assistant Priest.

12 Studies of Religion Baptism Revision We would like to extend our gratitude to Assistant Priest Fr. Josh Whicker MGL from St. Declan's, Penshurst, for sharing his wisdom on Catholic Baptism during the Year 12 Studies of Religion Revision Programme. His insightful presentation greatly enhanced the students' understanding of this important Sacrament and provided a deeper connection to their studies. His ability to engage the students and clarify the theological significance of baptism was both inspiring and enriching for their learning experience. We are truly thankful for his valuable contribution to our community.

Year 10 Wellbeing Day
For our Year 10 Well-being Day, we were given an incredible opportunity to learn about the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) and raise funds to support their organisation. The theme of the day was "Welcome," which aligns with our year's value. We embraced this theme through various activities throughout the day by engaging in a liturgy to acknowledge refugees and acceptance of others, class trivia games, and listening to the empowering stories of refugees who have faced many adversities and continue to face significant challenges throughout their lives.
One of the highlights from our day was our multicultural food stall, where we raised over a thousand dollars to contribute to the JRS. This experience helped us gain a deeper understanding of the diversity within our community and appreciate the access we have to quality education and resources, which empower us to build a brighter future. As teenagers, we are at a stage in our lives where we are forming our identities, values, and beliefs. The stories we hear and the experiences we learn about during this time will shape the kind of adults we become. Listening to the stories of refugees is not just about understanding their struggles, it's about developing empathy, broadening our perspectives, and challenging the stereotypes that are often perpetuated by the media. We really enjoyed listening to their experiences as it made us grateful for what we have.
We concluded the day by joining our little sisters and talking to them about how their year is going and further welcoming them to our school. I had a lot of fun today and hope we can do something like this again. The day was a huge eye opener for our year group, as it brought us closer as a cohort and was was a great idea for us to let go of any stress we had and have fun as a year group. We gained a deeper appreciation for our differences and showed how we can come together to celebrate our cultures while also contributing to a meaningful cause, reinforcing our gratitude and commitment to helping and welcoming others.
