A Message from the Principal
This weekend we celebrate the fourth Sunday of Advent
The Fourth Candle is the “Candle of Peace” and it reminds us that Jesus comes to bring Peace to the world and to people's hearts. Without Christ, there is no peace in this world. Isaiah prophetically foretold, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given.”
In the busyness of our world at Christmas, let us simply pray for peace in our family, our relationships and in our world. May the message of Jesus be prominent in all aspects of our Christmas celebrations for every Bethany family.
Merry Christmas and I hope that 2025 is full of awe and wonder as we learn new things.
Dear Parents, Carers and Friends of Bethany,
The time has come for me to write my final newsletter article as the Bethany College Principal. Over the past 7 years, I have thoroughly enjoyed leading our Community, celebrating our successes and troubleshooting ways to improve. It is a great privilege to be a Principal and a particular aspect that I have enjoyed is being able to hear the stories of families and working together to support each girl in her learning. On occasions, dealing with girls who may have made a mistake or not kept up with College expectations and then seeing the same girl mature and grow has been extremely rewarding.
When I reflect on the past 7 years, who would have thought that schools would be transformed overnight into places offering remote learning and mandated lockdowns in force. It has been a remarkable time to lead a school and in a role that I have never taken for granted.
I thank Fr Janusz and more recently Fr Thomasz for their spiritual guidance and especially during my time here, Fr Janusz for being a friendly mentor to me. I am proud that we have introduced Youth Masses, a social justice program and opportunities for staff and students to help in the community with St Vincent de Paul and local nursing homes.
In terms of the academic life of the College we continue to adapt the curriculum to engage students as best we can. Next year we will introduce Cafe Quality in Stage 5 as an elective and this course focuses on Barista skills and cafe type food. We hope that such skills learned may help in the gaining of part time work for students.
We remain pleased with the growth in student learning and the ways that we have developed our tracking of data for individual students using testing, teacher observations and formative assessment tasks. This helps each teacher know your daughter before she enters her first lesson of the new year.
Bethany has a culture where students want to learn and teachers want to teach. This formula has paid off after 6 years for each student in the outstanding HSC results that we have received each year.
I am always pleased to run into a former Bethany student and here where their life has taken them post school. Often, our ex students are confident women articulating what Bethany gave them that they still use and remember to this day. I too, am proud to be part of the journey of students both past and present.
To the wonderful Bethany staff, I thank them for their dedication and care. Today we farewell staff who were employed for just this year or part thereof in Mrs Wetherell, Mrs Schoenmaker, Mr Wallis, Mr Dowling, Mrs Militec, Mrs Kekatos and Mrs Libro. Also leaving from their permanent positions are Mrs Anderson and Miss Jones.
I would especially like to thank Mrs Camporeale, our Leader of Religious Education and Mission who leaves us today to go to another school. Mrs Camporeale embodies what high expectations mean, she inspires girls to want to develop in their faith and models what quality learning should be. I have enjoyed sharing in the Religious Leadership of the College with Mrs Camporeale and thank her for her care, service and work ethic.
Congratulations to Mrs Roseanne Bennett from our support staff who retires today. Mrs Bennett has been that friendly voice at reception on some days of the week and who is attentive to the needs of all before her. I wish Mrs Bennett well as she spends more time with her family and more time travelling the world.
As a foundation staff member of Bethany, Mrs Donna O’Hare retires today. Mrs O’Hare has by my calculation delivered more than 28000 lessons to students in her 35 plus years of teaching. Mrs O’Hare has been a considerate teacher who always tries to get the best out of each girl. She makes each girl feel special and supported even if they do not particularly like Maths. As a significant role model to many, Mrs O’Hare has shown that life is exciting and full of opportunities as long as you are open to tackling new things, she is a popular member of staff and dear friend to many. Mrs O’Hare holds a great deal of Bethany history and memories and she will be greatly missed next year. We wish Mrs O’Hare good health, many laughs and new opportunities as she leaves the gates of Bethany for the final time.
As I move into my new role as Manager of School Support at Sydney Catholic Schools, I look forward to working with secondary schools across the Archdiocese to further embed sound leadership practices, share and spread the good news of each school and mentor Principals as they tackle the challenges that inevitably come up. I am proud to be able to hand the leadership of the school over to Mrs Flanagan and I know that she will continue with the plans that we have made for the future and will be wonderful in taking Bethany to even greater heights.
Thank you to the entire community for believing in me, challenging me and allowing me to be of service. I walk away for a new challenge but holding a space in my heart for Bethany forever.

From the Assistant Principal
Our final week for this year has been one of celebration across the whole school. I want to thank our Bethany educators for their energy, creativity and purpose during 2024.
I’d like to also recognise our students who have worked so hard this year and contributed to the College in so many ways. Whether it be through a club that runs at lunchtime, a sporting team, debating, student leadership or just through helping out where needed, your work and contribution never goes unnoticed. Last Friday, we formally acknowledged the successes of Semester 2 for students across Years 7 - 11. It was a wonderful celebration encompassing achievement across the academic, sporting and cultural life of the College.
Thank you to all our parents and carers for your ongoing support of the College and our community. We definitely achieve more when we work together. 2024 has not been without its challenges but there has also been a lot to be grateful for.
Finally, thank you to Ms Rodwell for the part she has played in my leadership journey. As I move into the role of Principal in 2025, there is no doubt in my mind that I would not be taking this next step at Bethany College without her mentorship. Sydney Catholic Schools are taking one of the best and I look forward to working with Ms Rodwell in a different way next year.

Religious Education
As the year draws to a close, our College community gathered in the spirit of unity and faith for the Closing College Mass last Friday, celebrated fittingly on the Feast of St Lucy. St Lucy, whose name means "light," reminds us of the illuminating presence of Christ in our lives—a light that guides, inspires, and transforms us.
This occasion was particularly bittersweet for me, as it marked my final opportunity to stand before you all as the Leader of Religious Education and Mission. Over the past four years, this role has been a profound blessing, not merely as a position of leadership but as a journey of encountering the light of Christ in countless ways. St Lucy’s feast day provided the perfect symbolism for this reflection, as I can truly say that my time here has illuminated my heart, deepened my faith, and enriched my understanding of what it means to live as a disciple of Christ.
Through my work with our students, staff, and families, I have seen the light of Christ reflected in your kindness, your generosity, and your unwavering commitment to our shared mission. This community has not only supported me but has continually reminded me of the sacred responsibility we have to share that light with others. Each moment of collaboration, every shared prayer, and the countless acts of service I have witnessed have been a testament to the enduring presence of Christ’s love among us.
The Closing College Mass is always a moment of gratitude, for the year that has passed, for the growth we have achieved, and for the bonds we have strengthened. But for me, this Mass carried a particularly personal sense of gratitude. I am profoundly thankful for the privilege of serving in this role, and for the ways it has shaped me not only as an educator but as a person of faith. I am a better person because of the light this role has shown me, and for that, I will always be grateful.
As I prepare to transition into my new role as Dean of Ministry at Rosebank College, I do so with a heart full of hope and joy. The light that I have encountered here will continue to guide me as I embrace new opportunities to walk alongside others in faith. Ministry, after all, is not confined to a single place or role, it is a calling to bring the light of Christ wherever we go.
To this community, students, staff, and families, thank you for the love and support you have so generously given me. You have taught me, inspired me, and affirmed my calling in ways that words cannot fully capture. As I leave Bethany College, know that you will always hold a special place in my heart and prayers.
May the light of St Lucy, and the eternal light of Christ, continue to shine brightly in your lives. May it guide you, strengthen you, and remind you of the incredible capacity we have to bring love and hope to the world. Thank you for allowing me to be part of your journey. It has truly been an honour and a privilege.

Teaching and Learning News
As the year draws to a close, we had the privilege of celebrating the outstanding achievements of our students at the End of Year Academic Awards Ceremony. It was a heartwarming occasion that brought together parents, families, staff, and students to recognise and celebrate hard work, dedication, and excellence across Semester 2, 2024.
The ceremony was a true reflection of our school’s values: a commitment to faith, intellect, and character while striving for personal bests. Awards were presented to students who demonstrated exceptional academic achievement and to those who, through their effort and perseverance, inspired us all. A special congratulations goes to our Year 11 students who achieved first place in their Preliminary HSC courses — an incredible accomplishment and a testament to their hard work.
It was wonderful to see the pride on the faces of families and the joy shared among peers as we celebrated these successes together. The spirit of support and community was truly felt throughout the event, reminding us of the importance of coming together to acknowledge achievements both big and small.
As we now look forward to the Christmas break, we would like to take this opportunity to wish all our families, staff, and students a joyful and restful holiday season. May this festive time bring you moments of peace, laughter, and cherished time with loved ones.

Wellbeing Update
Year 10 alternate program Week 9
"The Year 10 Varied Program set up by the school allowed us to establish important life skills such as changing a tyre, money habits, referencing and First aid. Over the four days, students were taught by teachers and special visitors, my personal favourites being Galmatic (cars), self defence and First aid. Overall I greatly enjoyed the sessions and learnt a lot; the skills learnt in these workshops will come in handy in the future."

"The Year 10 Varied Program throughout the span of week 9 was very successful and highly beneficial to all the girls. We were provided with various skills needed for our senior years as well as life beyond school. In particular, the finance workshop was very interesting, giving us a general understanding of what we'll be dealing with once employed e.g superannuation and tax. Another engaging workshop was First Aid, which equipped with invaluable knowledge when responding to emergencies (definitely something we'll need throughout our lives). Overall, a very fun and engaging week!"

Wellbeing space Mural
Over the course of the past year we have undertaken to renovate the Wellbeing space. This is where the Year coordinators and counsellor have their offices, and is also home to the “Chill out zone”. We are very excited about our new layout, furniture and accessories. To add the final touch, three Year 8 students (Jaslyn Tran - winner of the Mural design competition run earlier this year, Marion Tuazon and Scarlett Hoang, all from Year 8) have transformed the space by spending their time over Term 4 painting the mural below onto the main wall. Jaslyn’s design is beautiful and the girls have used their extensive talents to create the mural which is now the feature of the Wellbeing space. Thanks and congratulations girls!
Gold awards
The final set of Gold awards were presented to the following students at our assembly in Week 9. We are very proud of the efforts of these girls in the key areas of Faith, Intellect and Character. Some students may have been notified that their merits have been converted to a Gold award; these will be presented at the first assembly in 2025.

Goal setting
In 2025, students will undertake a new process of goal setting that asks them to formulate one goal from each of the College pillars of Faith, Intellect and Character. Year coordinators and Pastoral teachers will lead the girls through this process from Term 1 next year, however it would be beneficial to use the time over the holidays to discuss possible goals for your daughters and ponder strategies as to how the goals may be achieved.
The statements below may provide a focus for your discussion:
Faith: This value centres on fostering a deep relationship with God through Catholic teachings, prayer, and the sacraments. It encourages students to live according to the Gospel, developing a strong sense of spiritual identity and moral compass, rooted in Catholic tradition. Character: Character focuses on the ethical and moral development of students. It emphasises virtues like honesty, integrity, compassion, respect, and service to others. Building strong character is seen as essential to forming responsible, caring, and thoughtful individuals who contribute positively to society. Intellect: Intellect represents the commitment to academic excellence and intellectual growth. It encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and a lifelong love of learning. In a Catholic context, this value also means integrating faith with reason, ensuring that education addresses both the mind and the spirit. |

Year 7 Colour Pop Paintings
Year 7 Art students enhanced their painting techniques by creating colourful Still Life Pop Artworks during the final weeks of term. They explored mixing colours and tones to produce vibrant and imaginative artworks. Great job, Year 7 Art students!
Year 8 Watercolour Birds
As the school year came to a close, Year 8 Art students explored the use of watercolor paints. They dedicated themselves to mastering techniques to create beautiful paintings. Well done, Year 8 Art students, for your hard work on this project and throughout the year!

2024 Premier’s Reading Challenge Morning Tea
Congratulations to the 20 students who completed the 2024 Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC). The challenge promotes a love of reading and encourages students to read widely to improve literacy. It is an opportunity for students to read from a wide range of authors, styles and genres and to gain new perspectives about themselves and the world around them. Students need to read 20 books in total - 10 of their choosing and 10 from the PRC list.
When students were asked what they like about the PRC, these were some of their responses:
- It widens the variety of books that I read. It’s nice to be able to do the challenge, saying I've done it since Kindergarten
- It allows me to explore different worlds through reading stories and challenging myself to read a certain amount of books and to make sure to read everyday. The Premier's Reading Challenge allows me to find out how much I am truly capable of reading.
- I love reading books and being transported into another dimension. It encourages me to keep reading, even when assessments and schoolwork is overwhelming.
- I like completing the Premier's Reading Challenge as it keeps me motivated to read books regularly in order to finish the Challenge.
To recognise their achievement, an awards presentation was held in the library and students were provided with yummy treats for morning tea. Many thanks to the canteen for providing such a beautiful spread of food. Special thanks to Ms Rodwell who presented these awards.

Behind the Bookmarks: The Literary Lives of Teachers
In this newsletter, Mrs Hart has kindly offered to share her thoughts on reading with you. We hope you enjoy!

“I think reading gives you lots of experiences that you won’t have in life. It can take you places you’ve never been. It helps you understand that the world necessary isn’t perfect and that other people do have struggles. You can read self-help books that can help you in your path. But also, it keeps your mind stimulated, which is really important.”
Can you please tell us about your role here at Bethany?
I have been the Curriculum Secretary for 4 years. I do things like reports, awards and NESA entries for HSC.
How would you describe yourself as a reader?
Avid and prolific. I read for pleasure rather than education.
So what does a day look like being an avid reader?
Twice daily.
How do you manage to achieve this on a daily basis?
I just make it a priority. It's how I relax. I use a Kindle so it’s constantly with me. There’s separation issues when my watch tells me I’ve left it behind. I even take it on holidays.
Do you have a specific time of day or place where you prefer to read?
No, I can read anywhere. I can even read while my mum is sitting there talking to me.
What formats do you prefer (physical books, e-books, audiobooks), and why?
Definitely ebooks because you’ve got the night light so you can read in bed. It remembers where you’re up to. I do like audiobooks, but I need to be able to connect with the person reading. Once a year, I read a physical book, because I like to read in the pool as my husband would get very upset if I dropped the iPad in the pool! The development of the Kindle enabled me to incorporate reading in bed because instant light was available.
What inspired your love for reading? Was there a particular book, author, or experience that sparked it?
As I am reading for pleasure, I get a sense of completion and connection with the story. Even though I read constantly, I have to be able to find something to connect with in the story, I can’t just read the words.
What are some benefits you've personally experienced from reading?
I've read everything Brené Brown wrote and a lot of Pema Chödrön and they've helped me to understand calmness and acceptance.
What genres do you enjoy reading the most, and what draws you to them?
I like contemporary reading and serials. I like the connection with the characters and to see what’s happened to them over time
Who are some of your favourite authors and what do you love about their writing?
I like Cathleen Brooks because of the long family connections. I also like Jill Childs, there will always be a murderer but you can never pick who it will be. There is always a twist at the end.
Can you recommend a book you believe everyone should read and explain why?
That would have to be one of the Brené Brown books, as you learn that it is ok to be ‘awkward, brave and kind’ as she quotes.
Is there a specific quote or passage from a book that resonates with you?
I find when I’m reading it, that a quote will connect with me and stay with me for the period it is relevant and then drops off. One of my favourite quotes is from Maya Angelou, “When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time”. Everyone does things that please you and displease you. You can’t change them to be the person you want them to be. They have shown you if they will please or displease you. Believe them and stop burning yourself out trying to make them change.
There is also a quote from J Mike Fields that has been sitting on my desk and it’s been the quote for me this year: ‘Get out of your head and back on your feet and remember who you are’. That’s big for me, I spend so much time in my head working through situations. You just have to remember this is who I am, where I am and keep moving forward. For the girls, many times, they are trying to be someone they think they should be. Just be who you are.
How do you feel when you finish a good book?
There is a sense of satisfaction and completion and a yearning for more knowledge.

Holiday Reading
The school holidays provide a great opportunity for your daughter to reconnect with literature. Reading helps to improve our ability to focus, communicate and develop empathy for others as we take a journey with the main characters into new worlds.
Holiday tips that might help in encouraging your daughter to read:
- What novels should my child read? com provides various recommendations for popular Young Adult (YA) Fiction.
- To find an appropriate text, visit your local library, bookshop (Big W and Kmart also have a wide selection) or search online (Booko, https://booko.com.au/, provides price comparisons for various retailers).
- If you are travelling, find a text that relates to your destination or the activities you will be doing there. Download the SORA app so you can listen to an audiobook in the car!
- Family Book Club - Share and read the chosen text with each other so that you can make it a point of discussion.

- Consider joining a Book Club - ‘Books with Bec and Jane’ offers many online book clubs for different ages and is run by an English teacher and a best-selling author. ‘The Midnight Readers’ is a fantastic online book club for ages 14+. ‘The Midnight Readers is an online book club for older teens offering them a break from the demands of high school into the pages of fresh, engaging stories’ One membership option includes access to monthly live Zooms to discuss the book of the month and also a chance to meet the author. They match your daughter up with a penpal also. If you need something for yourself, there is also an adult book club called ‘Birds of a Feather’. You need to sign up by December 31. What a great Christmas gift!!
- Create a new tradition by visiting the library together each holiday - libraries are one of the very few places that remain free of cost!
- The most effective way to encourage your child to read is to read yourself. Find a good book as a way to relax, rather than be on your own screen.

It’s been another wonderful year in the library. It is an amazing place filled with incredible students. I am grateful for every interaction, no matter how big or small, with your daughters.

YEAR 8 GELATO DAY!
Most people rely on the presence of Nativity scenes and Christmas trees as a sign
that the Festive Season is upon us. At Bethany College it’s the presence of gelato on
Yallunga Court that is a major clue. This annual event sees the Year 8 cohort use
their Italian language skills (and manners!) to get their hands on the best gelato this
side of the Mediterranean Sea.
Students were able to choose from Gelato al limone, al cioccolato, al caramello salato, al biscotto Oreo and alla vaniglia – all served with a smile by Prof Criniti and Prof Gianni. All students were successful in this important formative task.

POLYGLOTS CHRISTMAS TRIVIA!
How much do you know about Christmas celebrations around the world? A daunting question? Not for our Polyglots participants who put their heads together to work out what goes on in different cultures around the world at this time of year.
The event was organised and run by Year 12 student Ava Chow who is also a Languages Ambassador for the NSW School of Languages. Ava had everyone wondering what Japanese food items are served for Christmas, where Stollen originated from (hint: ALDI originates from there too!) and which female singer is heard through almost every shopping centre speaker this time of year. The students enjoyed the jovial atmosphere and the Christmas-themed snacks provided by the Languages teachers.
We wish all students and their families a Buon Natale / Merry Christmas and we look forward to more Polyglots events in 2025.

SCS Representative Sport Update
The Senior Oztag Team competed at the Sydney Championships last week. Their first match of the day was a semi final against Marist Sisters, Woolwich from Conference 2 and the girls put out a strong performance defeating them 12-0.
Following this game, the team progressed to the Grand Final against Our Lady of The Sacred Heart College, Kensington. Unfortunately the result didn’t go our way this time, with the final score finishing at 6-3. Congratulations on making it so far in the competition, you should be so proud of everything you’ve achieved together! Congratulations to Sophia Brightwell, who was named the Players’ Player of the match.
Futsal Gala Day
Last week on Wednesday 11th December, Bethany College competed in the SCS Conference 3 Futsal Gala Day. The girls were very competitive, finishing at the top of their pool after the round games. In a close semi final match, the team was unfortunately defeated by St Ursula’s 1-0. Congratulations on a great day and thank you to Mr Devlin for taking the team!
Badminton Gala Day
On Thursday, Mr Devlin and Ms Taylor took a record number of teams to the Sydney Badminton Gala Day! Bethany had three junior, five intermediate and four senior teams compete throughout the day. A few teams only just missed out on the finals, after defeat in their round games and semi finals. Congratulations to Beatrice Luo & Emily Wong who were Runners Up in the Senior Girls division!

Mathematics Update
Bethany’s Year 12 Extension Maths Students Explore Cutting-Edge Robotics at Sydney University
On a stifling afternoon in early December, seven Year 12 Extension Maths students had the unique opportunity to visit the Robotics Lab at Sydney University. This visit was made possible by Dr. Graham Brooker, a prominent academic in the field and the husband of Bethany’s Maths Coordinator and Extension 1 teacher, Mrs. Mandi Brooker.
Dr. Brooker and his team, including several postgraduate students and lab technicians—many of them young women—enthusiastically showcased the exciting possibilities of a career in engineering, particularly for women.
The tour began with demonstrations of agricultural robotics, including the renowned SwagBot. This tall, spider-like robot is designed to manage cattle in challenging terrain. To the group’s delight, they discovered that SwagBot’s engineer is Sara Carrabs, an ex-Bethany student and School Captain from 2014.
Next, the group explored the underwater robotics section, where they learned about a robot being developed for autonomous underwater archaeology. In the same area, they encountered two autonomous vehicles, which the students had the thrilling chance to “drive” around the lab.
The visit continued upstairs with a look at “Cassie,” a pair of walking robotic legs that once held the world record for the fastest robotic sprint. They also met the autonomous dentist—undoubtedly the most intimidating robot in the lab!
The final stop featured robotic arms designed as prosthetics, offering the students a hands-on experience with cutting-edge technology. Despite her previous attempts, Mrs. Brooker retained her title as the clumsiest operator of the controls!
The Bethany students and staff were deeply grateful to the Robotics Lab team for granting them a behind-the-scenes look at this fascinating facility. This inspiring visit offered a glimpse into the future of robotics and encouraged the students to consider the exciting possibilities of a career in STEM.

SciX Summer School - Places Still Available

The SciX Summer School, 20-24th January 2025, is a great experience for any year 11 or 12 student with an interest in scientific research. Participating students attend UNSW from 9am-4:30 pm each day of the summer school and will be supported by practicing researchers in designing and carrying out their own unique scientific investigation. Additional sessions build skills, experiences, and networking opportunities across the faculties of Science, Engineering, and Medicine and Health.

National Institute of Education - Medical Interview Preparation Workshops

The unique NIE workshop program aims for students to gain an in-depth understanding and required knowledge of the medical interview processes for specific universities, including Multi-station Mini Interview (MMI), Structured, and Semi-structured panel interviews. Tertiary Preparation Certificate (TPC)
The Certificate IV in Tertiary Preparation, otherwise known as the Tertiary Preparation Certificate (TPC), is a qualification equivalent to Year 12. It is an excellent alternative if you missed out on the HSC or you want to do the HSC again to achieve a higher score for entrance into university.
TPC graduates gain an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) equivalent called a Tertiary Entrance Score and can use this to apply for entry to universities across Australia.

The Westpac Young Technologists Scholarship was made for talented and inquisitive high school graduates looking to strengthen their passion and expertise in technology to innovate and create new opportunities and inspire good in the world of STEM.
Our Young Technologists Scholars get up to three years of financial support for their studies, networking opportunities, mentoring programs and paid internships with senior business leaders and industry-based experts as well as the chance to develop critical soft skills through the Disruptive Leaders Program. The program includes five days in Asia as part of an international learning experience to broaden minds and inspire new ways of thinking.
