Term 1 - Week 4
A Message from the Principal

Last Wednesday, we held our High Achievers Assembly, a special event to recognise and congratulate our outstanding Year 12 graduates of 2024. These students exemplified what it means to turn potential into achievement by setting realistic goals and working diligently toward them. If there’s one key takeaway from the assembly, it’s this: Success doesn’t happen by accident. It’s the result of consistent effort and the resilience to keep going, even when the road gets tough.

A particular congratulations goes to Zara Harrison, our College Dux for 2024, who achieved an impressive ATAR of 98.90. During the assembly, Zara shared valuable advice with the student body: “If I have learnt anything over the last year it is that consistency and hard work is the key to success above all else. You can not do any more than you are capable of, but what you are capable of when you put in 100% of your time, energy and focus will astound you. What got me here, standing in front of you all, is not intelligence, but dedicated hard work, and determination to do my absolute best at everything I attempted.”
I encouraged all students to remember that they, too, have the potential to achieve personal excellence. Success isn’t just about raw talent; it’s about making the choice, every day, to keep working toward your goals, no matter how big or small. It’s about having grit which, in this instance, is the perseverance and passion for long-term goals. It is the tenacity to keep pushing forward. Grit is waking up every day with commitment to goals, despite the obstacles or the slow progress we may perceive. Grit needs a little bit of patience. In a world that often glorifies instant success and overnight sensations, it's easy to forget that real and lasting success takes time.
Next week, on Tuesday March 4, we are holding our Open Day from 3.30pm - 6.30pm. Open Day is a day where prospective students and their parents visit our College and watch what is happening and what our facilities look like. Mostly though, they come to see how our girls relate to one another, to their teachers and listen to what our students say about their school. With almost 300 students volunteering to participate in Open Day, this speaks to me about the pride that our girls have in their school, something that can never be measured nor taken for granted.
Already this year we have seen students try out for sports teams, try out for public speaking, support members of our aged care community by volunteering to spend time at local nursing homes and share in the faith life of the College at Sunday’s Youth Mass. This speaks to me of students being engaged in their school and thus their learning. If your daughter hasn’t been involved in something yet; it’s just the start of the year! Please speak with them and encourage them to be involved at school as the year progresses. It’s a great way to get to know new people and find new interests.
Best wishes to our Public Speaking Team who will compete this evening in the CSDA Public Speaking Competition at St Patrick’s College, Sutherland. The team is led by our College Debating and Public Speaking prefect, Mairead McAllister and I look forward to hearing our girls speak tonight.
Finally, next week sees the beginning of Lent. As always, we will be supporting Caritas through Project Compassion, This Lent, Caritas Australia's Project Compassion invites us all to Unite Against Poverty and take action to make a lasting difference. Over the coming weeks, please encourage your daughters to be involved through participating in our fundraising events and making donations to Project Compassion.

From the Assistant Principal

The 2025 Bethany Open Day will be held next Tuesday March 4 from 3.30pm - 6.30pm, providing a wonderful opportunity for us to showcase our College and all that it offers to prospective and existing families.
There has been a huge response from our students who wanted to give of their time and volunteer to help with Open Day. With about 280 volunteers, it has shown me how generous the students of Bethany are and their love of the College. All girls who are volunteering need to be in their full school uniform, including blazers.

Students who are not assisting with Open Day will be dismissed from school at 1.30pm. Buses will depart for Hurstville from Croydon Rd and for Tuesday 4th only, students who catch the 947 from Hurstville Public School towards Ramsgate, will be able to catch the bus from Croydon Rd as well. The Rockdale bus will depart as usual from Forest Rd.
Please be advised that whilst there will be no formal lessons between 1.30pm and 3pm, there will be supervision provided for any student who wishes to remain at school and is not involved in Open Day. If you require supervision for your daughter please contact the College via email on info@bethanyhurstvile.edu.au. The normal school buses will operate at 3.00pm for any students who remain at the College for supervision.

On Tuesday, 18th February, we welcomed our Year 7 families and students at the 2025 Year 7 Welcome Mass. The girls received their Bethany College badge, which is an important symbol of our school and faith. Thank you to the wonderful Bethany staff for organising and attending this event, and thank you to parents for finding the time in your busy schedules to join us in support of our Year 7 students in their transition into the spiritual life of our College.

Religious Education

On Tuesday, 18th February, the College celebrated a significant moment in the academic year—the Year 7 Welcome Mass. This Mass not only marked the beginning of the Year 7 students’ journey at the College but also served as a welcoming ritual into the vibrant and supportive Catholic community that they are now part of.
The Welcome Mass is an important tradition at our College. It serves as a moment to reflect on the values of belonging, faith, and community. As Year 7 students step into their new school environment, the Mass is a way of showing them that they are not just joining a school—they are joining a larger, supportive community rooted in Catholic values. Being part of a Catholic community means embracing a shared sense of faith, kindness, and compassion for others.
The Mass was also instructional, helping the students understand the significance of this event. Through prayers, hymns, and reflections, the students were guided in their understanding of what it means to be a part of this faith community.
During the Mass, Year 7 students were invited to take part in an important ritual: the receiving of their College badges. These badges are more than just symbols of identification; they are a sign of commitment to the College's values and mission. In receiving their badges, the students made a pledge to uphold the values of our College community. This pledge, made in the presence of their peers, teachers, and families, marked their intentional step into a new chapter of their lives, grounded in faith and the College’s tradition.
Relationships are at the heart of Catholic education. The Year 7 cohort was encouraged to nurture relationships with one another, their teachers, and the wider community.
A powerful symbol introduced during the Mass was the lamb, representing both Jesus Christ and the Year 7 students themselves. Just as the lamb is a symbol of purity, sacrifice, and love, the Year 7 students are called to embody these same qualities in their journey at the College. They are reminded that they are like the lamb, gently called to follow in Christ’s footsteps by showing kindness, compassion, and care for one another. The lamb also speaks to the strength found in community: just as sheep are never alone but walk together, Year 7 students are never alone in their faith journey.
As they embark on this new chapter, Year 7 students are welcomed into a community that will support them, guide them, and help them grow in faith, intellect and character.

NAPLAN
All Year 7 and 9 students will be completing their NAPLAN tests in Week 6 and 7 of this term (see schedule below). Students are reminded that they must have a charged laptop, wired headphones (NO wireless earpods) and downloaded the appropriate lockdown browser. Both Year 7 and 9 have the lockdown browser download instructions shared with them and have been completing this in their homerooms since Week 3. Students with any technical issues should contact the IT department as soon as possible. Students need to bring their equipment for their other classes that they have on these days.
Students who are absent on the day of the test will be required to complete a catch up test within the NAPLAN test window where possible.
Please remind your daughter’s that NAPLAN is one way of measuring the ability in reading, writing and numeracy. It should not be something that they worry about or try to study for. However, we do encourage students to perform to the best of their ability so that we can use accurate data to best support your child.

Community Day
We celebrated our inaugural Community day at Bexley Oval last week. Years 8 -11 came dressed in their house colours and enjoyed a fun and relaxed day at the park.
Students had the choice of oversized games such as Connect 4, inflatable balls, quoits and noughts-and-crosses, or activities such as skipping ropes, footy and soccer, bocce, frisbee or sack races. Many students enjoyed participating in these games; others enjoyed the time to relax and enjoy a picnic with their friends. Rain stopped the day earlier than we had hoped, however the students displayed much resilience in working with their teachers to complete the rolls and make their way back to school. It was fabulous to see the mix of year groups in the various group games and a testament to the students that a wonderful spirit permeated the day.

JJAMM Retreat for Student leaders
The JJAMM Retreat was a very insightful experience that helped me grow my understanding of the Josephite Charism and what it means to be a leader and follower of Christ. I learnt about the life of Mary Mackillop who taught poor children, and ultimately brought light to generations by teaching academic and spiritual knowledge in light of Catholic teachings. I learnt about her friend, Julian Tenison Woods who shared her commitment to educating the poor. I also discovered the importance of St. Joseph, especially for refugees and asylum seekers. By meeting many students from different states and New Zealand, I learnt new ideas from others on ways to improve schools. The experience was rejuvenating, and I am thankful to God who gave me this opportunity to meet new people, grow in my faith and ultimately realise the profound importance of sharing His love. As said by Mary Mackillop “Never see a need without doing something about it”! Stephanie Sertic |

Clean up Australia Day
This Sunday March 2 is Clean Up Australia Day. To foster care for the environment and promote a clean College, the student leaders ran a House Cup Clean Challenge. Bins for Oodgeroo, Melba, Franklin and Kellerman were placed around Penola Court, Yalunga court and near the Demountables. Houses received points for how full their bin is at the end of the day!

The Bethany Bulletin
The Student Leaders have started a new initiative called The Bethany Bulletin. The Bethany Bulletin is a weekly update sent to Bethany students to ensure that they receive the necessary notifications of events of the week and are kept up to date with results from events such as sport and debating.
Attendance Matters
A reminder about logging student absence from 2025. As previously communicated, parents have 7 days to explain absence. After this time and if the absence remains unexplained, Compass will set this as UNEXPLAINED and this cannot be altered except in rare circumstances.
Goal setting
Over the next two weeks, students will be engaging in Goal setting during their pastoral periods and homeroom each morning. Clear goals support academic success, build well being, encourage reflection and develop critical skills for life.
Students will set three goals for Semester 1 2025 - one from each of Faith, Intellect and Character. Additionally they will decide upon a realistic strategy to help them to achieve their goal. These will be discussed with parents, caregivers and pastoral teachers and added to Compass- visible to staff, students and parents. Towards the end of Semester 1, progress towards the goal will be reviewed and the goals will be either amended or new goals set.
The process is done through the “Insights” tab on Compass. Parents are able to view their daugther’s goal in addition to writing down their hopes for their daughter at Bethany this year. The goals and hopes will be visible to students, teachers and parents to provide discussion and direction for the students this year.
Please click here for the instruction guide to adding goals on Compass.

Swimming Carnival
The annual College Swimming Carnival was a fantastic day for students, filled with friendly competition and school spirit. Held at Bexley Aquatic Centre, the event saw students of all abilities take to the pool, earning points for their houses and cheering on their teammates. There were some impressive performances on the day and some very close finishes.
A big thank you to all the staff, students, and volunteers who helped make the event run smoothly. It was great to see so many students getting involved and supporting each other throughout the day.
House winners and Age Champions will be announced at our next whole school assembly.

Shrove Tuesday - Have a Pancake!
Lent is drawing near again so time to clear out the pantry and make a pancake!
Shrove Tuesday is otherwise famously known as “Fat Tuesday.” It is also known in many other countries as “Carnevale” which translates to “meat festival.” This day was never really a celebration of food but rather a day of clearing the foodstuffs from the cupboards in preparation for Lent, as the next forty days will be a time of remembrance, repentance and fasting.
To mark Shrove Tuesday, student leaders will be selling pancakes (with ice cream) to fundraise for Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion.

Lenten Appeal - Buy a Goat for Project Compassion
During the five weeks of Lent money will also be collected for Project Compassion, the Lenten appeal of Caritas Australia. The goal of each Pastoral Class is to raise enough money to buy TWO GOATS for communities in need.

Caritas is a Catholic international aid agency that supports Australian and International communities in need, working to eradicate poverty. Projects of Caritas include educating communities for sustainable farming, disability work and healthcare and young mother support groups For more information, go to https://www.caritas.org.au/project-compassion/
