Term 1 - Week 10
A Message from the Principal

Dear parents, carers and community members,
The end of the term is usually a good time for reflection and over the past few days, I have cast my eye back over our term at Bethany, my first as principal.
Today, we had a beautiful Lenten Liturgy to conclude the term. As a community we reflected on the Stations of the Cross and the journey of hope that comes from Easter. A sincere thank you goes to Ms Ye for her work to prepare for this Liturgy.
Last night I attended the Sydney Catholic Schools Executive Director’s Awards for excellence in the HSC and VET. Twelve of our students from the graduating class of 2024 were recognised for either first within SCS for a subject or outstanding service and commitment to VET. In addition, one of our current Year 12 students, also received a first in course for two subjects she studied in for the HSC whilst she was in Year 11.
Not all the girls could make it but it was wonderful to see those who could accept their awards in front of their loved ones!
Congratulations to:
Zara Harrison | First in Modern History First in Studies of Religion II |
Lara Holbrook | First in Modern History |
Kara Giardullo | First in Investigating Science |
Celina Tannous | First in Dance |
Sophie Aloi | First in Entertainment Industry |
Eleni Koinaris | First in Modern Greek Continuers First in Modern Greek Extension |
Elisha Petelo | First in Studies of Religion II First in Society and Culture |

I would also like to acknowledge the amazing staff who worked so tirelessly with these girls:
Melanie Bullock, Renee Kelly, Danielle Como, Clare Moroney, Alison Sladen, Michelle Barrass, Angela Saveski, John Camarda and Cassandra Bartels.
I was also proud to watch our Senior Touch Football Team play in the Sydney Catholic Schools finals. Conference 3 Champions, this team played with great spirit and teamwork and came away with third place. Congratulations girls for an outstanding season! Special thanks to their coach, Ms Rachel Bevan, for her work and efforts with the girls.
Four of our swimmers also have been named in the 2025 NSWCCC Swimming Team. They will compete at the NSW All School Swimming competition at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre on Thursday, 22 May - Friday, 23 May 2025. Congratulations to these amazing athletes: Keighly Altera, Kelsey Corbett, Hallie Wong and Kai Zhou!

It is also important to recognise all measures of growth. Please congratulate your daughter for the merits that she has received this term; you will have seen these come through on Compass. For many of us, we do not take congratulations well, feeling uncomfortable in this space. Ask your daughter what was so special in her being recognised in getting a merit as these are important and affirming conversations.
Congratulations to Serena Dewberry, Charlotte Giamboi, Charlotte D’Arcy and Jenna Henshaw for their successful completion of the Step Up into Teaching Program (SUiT). SUiT is an Australian Catholic University (ACU) early entry program approved by NESA. It provides high school students considering a career in teaching the opportunity to experience learning in a university environment. These students completed two first year university units in Education and have earned conditional early offers to the ACU Teaching Degree of their choice. What a wonderful achievement!
Special congratulations to Year 7 for settling into Bethany so well and to Year 12 for finishing their Half-Yearly exams!
Term 2 is one where there are many tasks and events. Whilst resting during the holidays, please spend some time with your daughter asking her what are key dates for her next term and how will she arrive at these dates being organised and confident. For parents, please visit our calendar on the College website as each year group will have parent teacher interviews, Years 8 and 10 parents will have parent information evenings for subject selection.
At the end of this term, Alicia Cincotta, our Newman Selective Gifted Education Program Coordinator, will go on maternity leave. Thank you to Alicia for all her work with our students and staff in the gifted education space. Alix Stirling, currently our Literacy Coordinator, will take over this role from Term 2. We wish Alicia and her family much love for this special time.
Finally, I’d like to acknowledge Sylvia Eldahaby who has been a Year Coordinator at the College for the last 6 years. Sylvia leaves the Bethany community to take on a promotional position within Sydney Catholic Schools. An outstanding educator and a wonderful Year Coordinator, we wish her well in this new endeavour.
I thank all students and parents for the interest and support that you have shown towards the College during Term 1 and I look forward to watching further growth in Term 2.
Kristina Flanagan
College Principal
From the Assistant Principal

The holidays provide an excellent opportunity for the girls and staff to reset and rejuvenate after what has been a great first term at Bethany. The last few weeks have been a busy time with tasks for all our students and exams for Year 12 so the holidays are an important chance for students to take some time to relax. I wish all our girls and their families a safe and Holy Easter break.
UNIFORM
Next term, students return to school in the winter uniform. Now is a great time to check the length of skirts and tunics, ensuring they meet the College standard. Below is a reminder of the College requirements for our winter uniform. Please note, that there are now optional long pants available for our girls to wear during the winter months.
The College blazer is the outer garment for travel to and from school, excursions, and at official ceremonies. It is a compulsory part of the winter uniform.
A reminder the uniform shop is open during school holidays. Please refer to the attachment in the newsletter which outlines the hours for the holidays.
What does optional winter uniform mean?
Currently, winter items such as the College scarf and cardigan are optional. This will be the same for winter pants. For any formal occasions such as excursions, masses etc., pants cannot be worn.
For students in Years 7 - 9, an additional winter shirt, with the College logo on it, will need to be purchased to wear with the pants. Only this blouse can be worn for juniors with pants and it is the same as the current senior winter blouse. As with all parts of our uniform, only items purchased at our uniform shop can be worn as the uniform.
If students feel that it is necessary to wear more clothes for warmth during winter they must be worn under the regular uniform e.g. spencers, socks etc, and not be seen. Assorted jumpers and tracksuit jackets etc. are not acceptable.
CANTEEN PRICE INCREASE
The increased cost of living is affecting all aspects of our day-to-day lives and the College canteen is no different. There will be a slight increase of prices throughout the canteen from the beginning of Term 2. Whilst this is unfortunate the cost of supplies has risen over time and the prices will need to rise to meet this added cost. We thank you for your understanding.
RSL AND SCHOOLS REMEMBER ANZAC COMMEMORATION
"The RSL and schools ANZAC commemoration day was a great opportunity for all individuals at the ceremony to reflect on the ANZACs and come together to remember them. The year 10 Student Representative Council spent the day listening to songs, stories, and odes, and we also placed down a wreath in commemoration. Overall, the ceremony was very nice, and coming together with all the different schools and distinguished guests made the event of greater significance in the effort to celebrate those who fought for us."

"The Archbishop Leaders Luncheon held on 2 April, was an insightful experience where I got to learn a lot from Archbishop Anthony Fisher in a Q&A discussion with other schools concerning living out our faith in boldness and joy.
This included the importance of being courageous in a world of spiritual warfare, igniting the flame of hope within us and being guided by the Holy Spirit! Basically, I was able to truly understand the Sydney Catholic Schools System Theme ‘May we seek what is good, true and beautiful’ and how we can be witnesses (John 15:27) to that and to Christ himself!"

Youth Ministry

A POWERFUL 10:10 ENCOUNTER: WHAT IS LOVE?
Our after school 10:10 Project started this week with 44 Year 10 attending session 2. The SCS speakers covered the question “What is Love?” Students learnt about what real love looks like. Our students analysed the difference between love that gives and love that takes—between desire and lust, affection and self-indulgence. They examined how authentic love is not just about consent, but about a free and total gift of self, rooted in respect, virtue, and sacrifice.
Throughout the session, honest discussions, real-life scenarios, and faith-based insights helped the students see how their identity and relationships are connected. By the end of session, they walked away with a clearer understanding of what it means to be a man of faith, purpose, and love in today’s world.

PROJECT COMPASSION
Project Compassion collections finished in the College this week. Thank you to the very generous donations received over Lent. The students managed to raise $7,156.50 for Caritas, which is absolutely incredible!
Each Pastoral Class had the challenge of raising enough money to buy two goats for a community in need. As they raised enough money for each goat, they had the opportunity to name it.

TUTORS IN THE LIBRARY
Our students have access to tutors in our library from Monday to Thursday every week of the school term. The assistance they provide is available to students from Yr 7-12. We encourage students to make the most of these tutors in Term 2-4 to assist them with understanding concepts and topics that they are studying in class, gaining assistance with their homework or with how to approach an assessment task.

ATOMI
All Bethany students have access to the online learning platform Atomi which provides a wealth of videos and quizzes aligned to the curriculum. Atomi is an effective way for students to revise and consolidate their learning in class. Students should be attempting the quiz questions on Atomi especially in the lead up to an assessment task. It also has a section available to students regarding study skills. More information can be found about Atomi here.

REFLECTION TIME
Term 1 is always a busy time. New people to get to know in your class and new teachers, new concepts and subjects to get their heads around and increased expectations on how they approach their studies and the ways in which they have to show their learning. During these holidays when students have a time to stop and reflect on their term, it is a great time for them to ask themselves a few questions. We encourage parents to have this conversation with their daughters so that you can gain some insight into where your child is at, and what they may need help with.
- What went well this term for me?
- What am I most proud of this term (e.g. 100% attendance, increased participation in class discussions)
- What are the subjects/concepts that I understand best and which ones do I need to still work on?
- What strategies have I put in place to help me to achieve my best?
- What are the ‘roadblocks’ that I am facing when it comes to achieving my potential?
- How do I remove or reduce these ‘roadblocks’?

We wish all students a relaxing break.

Sport Update

Representative Sport Update
Last week, three Bethany teams competed in the Conference Semi Finals after placing in the top four of their division.
A great effort by our Intermediate Basketball team who fought hard and gave it their all, unfortunately going down in their Semi Final against Bosco, 44-30.

Our Intermediate Touch Football team were successful in their semi final, progressing to the Grand Final against Aquinas, Menai. It was a tough match, down going into the second half, the team fought until the end and scored a few late tries to send the game into drop off at the end of regular time. Unfortunately the girls couldn’t secure the win, but should be super proud of their efforts this season!

Congratulations to the Senior Touch Football team who were challenged in their semi final, but hung on to clinch the win in their semi final. Later in the day, they were crowned Conference 3 Champions winning their grand final 8-4 against Bosco! This saw the team progress to the Sydney Championships this week.

Yesterday, our Senior Touch Football team competed at the Sydney Catholic Schools Championships at Holy Cross College, Ryde. It was a bit of deja vu from the previous week, the girls were down in the second half and scored with a few minutes remaining to draw the game at full time against Marist Sisters Woolwich! 2 minutes in drop off with 4 players each, couldn’t separate the two teams, sending them into a 3 player drop off. The girls weren’t able to come away with the win, but put out a huge effort and still had a second chance to playoff for third place.
In the playoff the girls came up against La Salle Bankstown and were committed to getting the win! A strong finish saw the girls awarded bronze medals for their 6-3 win! A particular congratulations to Niah Morris who was named ‘Best on Ground’ in the playoff match. Overall an amazing achievement by the girls - you should be so proud!

A special shoutout to everyone back at school who supported the girls, watching them on the livestream on Yallunga Court!

SCS Touch Football
Congratulations to Lucy Teplicanec, Niah Morris, Charlotte Teplicanec and Sophia Brightwell who have been selected in the Sydney Catholic Schools Touch Football teams. The girls will represent SCS and Bethany at the NSWCCC trials on Tuesday 29 April - Wednesday 30 April 2025. All the best girls and congratulations!

NSWCCC Hockey
Congratulations to Audrey Paige from Year 8 who has been selected in the NSWCCC Hockey Team for 2025. Audrey will represent Bethany and NSWCCC at the NSW All Schools Hockey Championships in Newcastle on the 5th June and 6th June 2025. Well done Audrey and good luck!

Illawarra Suburb Lawn Tennis Association (ISLTA)
Congratulations to Joanne Lewis, of Year 11, who won her grand final on the weekend in the Illawarra Suburb Lawn Tennis Association (ISLTA) competition. She partners with Kassem Makki (from Marist Kogarah) and to win their grand final they played 2 sets of doubles and one single each within this format and won all their 4 matches beating Miranda 4 - 0.
Congratulations! A wonderful showcase of Joanne’s commitment & dedication to sport outside of school.

Year 7 Camp
"Year 7 camp kicked off with excitement as students arrived, ready for three days of adventure, challenges, and unforgettable memories. The experience took place from Monday 24 March - Wednesday 26 March. The aim of camp was to foster friendships, build resilience, and encourage Year 7 to step out of their comfort zones - and they certainly did!
Throughout camp, students participated in a variety of enjoyable activities, including bushwalking, damper making and fire-building, kayaking, archery, raft-building, and stand-up paddleboarding. Our favourites were kayaking and stand up paddle boarding. To begin our water adventure, we first put on our life jackets and, with paddles in hand, propelled ourselves forward. Despite the splashing and occasional tumbles, we had an incredible time!
Kayaking was just as exciting! While similar to paddleboarding, it had its own challenges - especially carrying the heavy kayaks from the shed to the shore! As we rowed back and forth, carefully balancing to avoid capsizing, our group instructor guided us through several activities, including racing to checkpoints, forming a raft by joining all the kayaks together, and paddling down a peaceful stretch of water.
Beyond the activities, we loved seeing our bunk beds for the first time - the excitement was evident on our faces! We also enjoyed the experience of getting to know new people in our cabins.
Although there were some challenges - such as missing home, experiencing fatigue, and overcoming fears of wildlife - these obstacles didn’t hold Year 7 back. We pushed through, relying on the support and encouragement of our friends and teachers.
All in all, camp was a sensational experience, creating memories that we will undoubtedly treasure for years to come!"

Year 12 Geography Tackle Mount Kosciusko
From 11 - 14th March, our Year 12 Geography class embarked on an unforgettable adventure to Mount Kosciuszko, Australia's highest peak, along with Blue Lake and Charlotte's Pass. Our journey was a perfect blend of breathtaking views, questionable map-reading skills, and unexpected bonding experiences.
As we tackled the steep inclines and rocky terrain of Mount Kosciuszko on day one, friendships were forged through shared struggles and spectacular summit views. Day two brought us to Blue Lake. Despite the challenges and sore muscles we returned home with a sense of accomplishment, inside jokes, and a newfound appreciation for flat ground. Who knew geography could be such an extreme sport?
