    A Message from the Principal

Dear parents, carers and the Bethany community,

We have been back at school for two weeks and I hope that everyone had a restful Easter and holiday break. The girls have returned to school focused and ready for the term ahead.

We began the term with a special ANZAC assembly, led beautifully by our Year 11 students.  It is always special to welcome our friends from Bexley RSL Sub-Branch who contribute so much to our College. Thank you to Hugh Quinn, Anne Brown and Stephen Godoy for their ongoing support of our school.

Last week, the College engaged in Sydney Catholic Schools’ Inquiry and Review Process. This involved an external panel coming in to speak with parents, students, staff and the College Leadership Team about life at Bethany. We reflected on the last 5 years and considered how we have fulfilled the faith, learning and pastoral goals that were set in 2019. I would like to thank all those who were involved in this process. Aside from these important discussions, the panel also looked at a wide range of evidence that we provided to support key areas of success and considered what we could do to make Bethany even better. It was authentic, informative and exciting as we set new goals for the next 4 years at Bethany. Once the panel has finalised the documentation, I will publish our new goals to our community.

Yesterday, we held our annual Mother’s Day Mass and morning tea and each year, this event continues to grow. Fr Josh from the Penshurst Parish celebrated our mass and it was beautiful to see all the mothers, grandmothers and special women who came along. Thank you to Ms Touma and the RE team for their leadership of this event and all the staff who came along in support. Thank you to the Year 11 students who came to school, at what must have felt like first light, to cook and prepare our morning tea and  Ms Bartels, Ms Kalaitzis and Ms Melville for their guidance and preparation of their students. A special thank you to all our Bethany mums, those who walk with us in person and those who walk beside us in spirit. I thank you for everything you do for your girl and for the way you trust us to care and guide her at school.

As we delve into further learning and assessments this term, please talk with your daughter about what is coming up for her, how she is feeling about her workload and how her plans are progressing with meeting deadlines. Students can often feel anxious or stressed during periods of more intense workloads and whilst some of this can be quite normal, please let us know if there is anything that feels out of the ordinary.

Wishing you all a beautiful Mother’s Day on Sunday.

    Kristina Flanagan

    College Principal

    From the Assistant Principal

Again in 2025 Bethany College will be participating in an online survey - Tell Them From Me (TTFM). The survey gives us valuable feedback on what our community thinks about many aspects of school life. The information you provide will be used to maintain our commitment to working together in partnership to further improve student learning and wellbeing at Bethany.

The survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete and you are able to access the parent survey on your computer or mobile device. A link to the survey will be sent out to all households via Compass once the survey opens on the 19th May. Students will complete the survey here at school, however, if you do not want your child/children to participate in the survey, please complete the attached opt – out form and return it to the school by the 19th May. Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

Tell Them From Me opt out form

    Mothers Day

It was wonderful to see so many mothers at our Mother’s Day Mass on Thursday. The presence of our wonderful mothers made the event truly special, as we honoured and appreciated their endless dedication and care.

I wish all the mothers, grandmothers and significant women in our community a beautiful day on Sunday with your families. Happy Mother's Day!

    Winter Uniform

Thank you for all your support in ensuring the girls are in the correct winter uniform as we have started Term 2. A reminder that the girls are expected to arrive and depart the College wearing the College blazer.

    Mobile Phones in Schools

From Term 4, 2023, the NSW state government implemented a policy banning the use of mobile phones in all schools. This policy aims to create a focused and distraction-free learning environment for students. This means that students must keep their phones turned off and out of sight during school hours. Here at Bethany, the expectation is that the girls have their phones switched off and that they are locked in their lockers. This policy helps ensure that students can concentrate on their studies and interact more meaningfully with their peers. Students who do not meet these expectations will be challenged by staff and consequences will be issued following the College mobile phone level system. I thank you for your support in talking with your daughters regarding the importance of adhering to this policy and giving the girls some much needed time away from their phones during school hours.

HONORING POPE FRANCIS: A LEGACY OF SERVICE AND PEACE

The world mourns the passing of Pope Francis, who left an indelible mark on the Church and humanity. His Holiness passed away on 21 April, 2025, at the age of 88, leaving behind a legacy of humility, compassion, and advocacy for social justice.

Even in death, Pope Francis' mission of mercy continues. His popemobile, once a symbol of his closeness to the faithful, is being repurposed into a mobile health unit for the children of Gaza. Entrusted to Caritas Jerusalem, it will deliver much-needed medical care in a region where healthcare has all but collapsed. This final act reflects his lifelong commitment to serving the most vulnerable and fostering peace in a divided world.

May his legacy inspire us all.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.

THE POWER OF MOTHERHOOD:  MOTHER'S DAY IN THE MONTH OF MARY

As May unfolds, we celebrate both Mother’s Day and the Month of Mary, the Mother of God—a time to reflect on the sacred vocation of motherhood.

The Example of Mary, the Mother of God
Mary exemplifies four virtues that remain central to motherhood today:

               Faith

    • Mary’s yes to God made her the first disciple, as she embraced His will with complete faith, nurtured Christ from birth, supported His ministry, and remained steadfast in love and sacrifice.
    • Mothers are the first disciples of their families, guiding their children in faith, embodying virtues of patience, fortitude, and love, and trusting in God’s plan just as Mary did.

      Patience
    • As Jesus embraced His ministry, Mary showed patience, allowing Him to become who He was meant to be. She never interfered or tried to change His path; instead, she walked with Him in quiet support.
    • Patience is a virtue mothers carry in abundance. Rather than imposing wisdom upon their children, they wait for them to seek guidance, ensuring that their counsel is offered with kindness rather than demand. It is this patience that allows love, gentleness, and understanding to flourish.

      Fortitude
    • Mary’s strength was unwavering. She stood at the foot of the Cross as her Son suffered, enduring pain that no mother should ever face. She never abandoned Him, offering love when others recoiled in fear.
    • Today, mothers around the world show that same fortitude—mothers who care for sick children, mothers enduring conflict and hardship, mothers who remain steadfast even in moments of sorrow. They do not turn away. For those who have lost their mothers, their love does not fade with time. Even in death, their presence endures.

      Love
    • Mary’s love is universal. She loves all of us as she loved Jesus. Love is the foundation of motherhood, the virtue from which all others grow. It is a love that grants patience, offers strength, and fosters deep faith.
    • In loving their children, mothers manifest God’s love, making the transcendent real.

As we celebrate Mother’s Day, let us give thanks for the mothers and mother figures in our lives—those with us and those who have passed. May Mary’s example inspire them, and may they continue to lead with faith, patience, strength, and love.

YEAR 7 REFLECTION ON TERM 1 - THE FIRST TERM OF HIGH SCHOOL

"Transitioning from primary school to high school has been a challenging yet enjoyable experience for Year 7. In our first week at the College, known as the ‘Transition Program’, we met new people, played a lot of ‘getting to know you’ games, made new friends and learnt a lot of organisational skills. The College welcomed us with open arms during our Welcome Mass and the welcome has continued in our developing relationships with our Big Sisters, Pastoral Care teachers, classroom teachers, and fellow Bethany College students. We’ve particularly loved getting to know our Pastoral Care teachers who have played important roles teaching us how to read a timetable, organise study schedules to help with our homework, and navigating our way through the unfamiliar hallways and classroom. The homework load, in particular, has been new for a lot of Year 7 students.

To keep on top of our work, we’ve learnt to log incomplete work in our College diaries, generously provided by the school, to keep track of what we have to do daily. They’ve also guided us through a range of pastoral care activities on how to be a good friend and how to deal with bullying. While wrapping our heads around a new environment and procedures was at times a stressful task, we persevered and eventually, with the support of our teachers, got into the gist of things. As Term 1 steadily progressed, we looked forward to the much anticipated Year 7 Camp.

To encourage us to introduce ourselves to potential new friends, our year coordinator, Miss Issa, decided to randomise the cabin groups. It was a new experience bunking in cabins with people who were unfamiliar to us, but it turned out to be unexpectedly agreeable. During our camp, we participated in various recreational activities and gatherings. We learned a lot of life skills such as raft-building, damper-making (a type of dough that we cooked with a campfire), archery, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, and more. I, Sofia Wong, have been quoted saying “I burnt my damper but ate it anyway”, reflecting perseverance in this tricky (and sticky) situation. We also encountered an abundance of flora and an amazing array of wildlife freely wandering the site. More recently, each Year 7 student has had the opportunity to develop three goals - one faith, one character, and one intellect goal.

For many of us, finding ways to build our character means volunteering for roles like chairperson or timekeeper in debating, or joining the SRC. This shows leadership. I, Ricca Christina Tenedora, gave Public Speaking a go earlier this year. With Mairead McAllister’s help, I kept drafting and redrafting my speech until I was happy with it, and I made it to the semi-finals. Our favourite subject is English. We’ve had a blast of time watching and analysing Shrek and learning sophisticated writing techniques. All in all, while the transition to high school has had its challenges, we’ve persevered, grown in maturity, and look forward to continuing to develop our character, grow in our intellect and strengthen our faith."

    - Ricca Christina Tenedora and Sofia Wong (Year 7)

    YEAR 7 CAMP REFLECTION

Last term, the Year 7’s of Bethany College went to Narrabeen for three days for their first high school camp. Over the three days we did a wide range of activities such as archery, damper making, stand up paddle boarding, canoeing and raft building. In the morning, midday and nigt we were provided a delicious meal to overcome our hunger from all the fun and exciting activities. Some girls' favourite part was the trivia nights or staying up late with friends. When the camp came to an end some girls were happy, some sad but overall it was an everlasting memory to keep.

SAFE PARTYING WITH RED FROGS - YEAR 12 PRESENTATION

"On Tuesday, Year 12 had a fantastic opportunity to take part in a guest speaker presentation from Red Frogs, who visited our school to educate us on safe partying. The session was highly informative and gave us valuable insights into staying safe in unfamiliar or risky situations. We learned about the importance of looking out for one another, understanding the risks involved with parties, and how to make responsible decisions.

Red Frogs is a support network that provides education, safety, and support for young people, especially around party culture and events.

A big thank you to Red Frogs for their time and dedication in supporting young people across Australia!"

    - Larissa Bazgalovski (Year 12)

    BIBLICAL AFFIRMATION WALL

I wanted to create the Biblical affirmation wall, because it is a way that God can speak to us amidst the busy-ness of our lives, whether it be rushing to school in the morning or walking between classes! Its encouraging statements based on scripture can help affirm the truth and promises of God in our lives. By speaking truth over ourselves such as ‘God is always with me’ (Isaiah 41:10), instead of saying ‘I’m alone’, we can reap transformation- by renewing our mindsets. It says in Proverbs 18:21, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue and those who love it will eat its fruits”. What we say over ourselves can influence us a lot! God’s word is ’Alive and active’ and ‘It is sharper than any two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit’ - (Hebrews 4:12). By affirming ourselves through Scripture, we can truly embrace the truth of God’s character and our identity in Christ.  I will change the wall with different affirmations every 1-2 weeks, which will help refresh and strengthen our faith. There will also be some more affirmations placed throughout the school. I hope that everyone who walks past, will feel the Holy Spirit convicting them and Jesus’ invitation to a personal relationship with Him!

    Stephanie Sertic, Year 12

    GOAL SETTING

Students have recently reflected on their progress towards the Faith, Intellect and Character goals that were set in Term One. I trust that families have had a chance to check in with their daughters to talk about the ongoing development of these goals. Some of the responses from the survey are included below. At the beginning of next term, students will be asked to consider how they tracked with their goals in Semester One and what they may do differently next semester. They will decide upon another set of goals in Semester Two. The setting of SMART student goals and the refinement or accomplishment of these are what we are working towards with the students.

I am tracking my goals on paper. I think the goals are suitable. To achieve my intellect one I need to put more effort in certain subjects.

I'm making steady progress toward my Faith, Intellect, and Character goals, though there have been some challenges along the way. Some goals have pushed me beyond my comfort zone, requiring patience and adaptability. By the end of this term, I need to stay committed, reflect on my growth, and take intentional steps to ensure I reach my goals in a meaningful way.

I think I have done well to reach my goals by being in a set routine and being consistent.

For myself, I have been quite surprised with myself over the last term as I have actually put up my hand and have been answering questions within class whenever the opportunity arises. In regards to tracking my goals I normally remind myself during the start of every week with an aim to at least improve on one during the week.

I can do better in making an active effort to strive towards those specific goals

I have set suitable goals, however the only obstacle that is concerning me is being susceptible to distractions after school. These include; YouTube, Netflix, social media etc

I haven't been keeping up with my goals as much as I had hoped. My Faith, Intellect, and Character goals have not been a strong focus lately, and I need to dedicate more time to them. By the end of this term, I want to find ways to re-engage with them and build better habits so I can make more progress

For faith I have made a prayer place at home but I don't use it often.

With the intellect goal I wanted to get 12 merits by the end of term one and I was able to complete that.

With the character goal I wanted to be able to sit with new friends and branch out to make new connections. I think I definitely did that.

    ATTENDANCE MATTERS

Bethany attendance continues to be improved over 2025. The whole school attendance is currently sitting at 94% which is solid indeed! Thank you to families for supporting their daughter’s attendance at school and, as far as possible, making appointments outside of school hours.

During Week 2, students have been asked to engage with their own attendance data by rating and reflecting on their attendance. Below are some of the responses to the survey question: “Why did you give yourself this rating?” The response is not as important as the fact that students at Bethany are authentically engaging with their attendance data and considering how learning and attendance are linked:

I need to be at school more often

As I have only skipped one day and I was very sick on this day.

Because i have already improved from last year

Try to do more self care so I don't get sick as much

My attendance has drastically improved from this time last year

I rarely don't come to school because my mum sends me to school unless I'm really sick

There are too many days off in one term

Because i have too many days off and it wrecks my learning

I need to improve my attendance due to missing many days while away on a trip or sick. Improving attendance will work towards your grade.

REMINDER TO FAMILIES REGARDING STUDENTS LEAVING EARLY FROM SCHOOL

Students in Years 7-10 need a parent to pick them up from the front office before being allowed to go home for illness/injury/appointment or any other reason. Alternatively, parents may enter the parking area off Croydon Road by pressing the intercom and letting reception know the name of their daughter being picked up - in this case the student will be allowed to walk to the car park.

Students in Years 11-12 will also need to follow the same procedure in terms of illness/injury.

This is a security measure and we ask for your cooperation in adhering to this procedure for the safety of all students.

    Year 12 PDHPE PhysXrehab Excursion

"On Friday the 2nd of May, the two Year 12 PDHPE classes attended the Health and Movement Science excursion at the PhysXrehab centre in Cromer to consolidate and deepen our understanding of the current topic we are studying, Factors affecting performance. The day consisted of 3 sessions, a theoretical session where we learnt about stages of skill acquisition and arousal levels and how they may differ for athletes. We also experimented with some equipment that measures force such as the Vald force plates.

The second session was a more practical session where we participated in speed tests and endurance tests to consolidate knowledge about the different energy systems and how they work. The third session focused on the principles of training and learning how athletes train with the correct technique to enhance muscle hypertrophy. Overall, we had a great day as we gained a better understanding of HSC content through fun and engaging theory and practical activities."

    - Claudia Boulos, Year 12

"On Friday the 2nd of May, our PDHPE year 12 cohort went on an excursion to PhysX at Cromer, which was a valuable and engaging experience. Throughout the day we explored the content we’ve been learning in the classrooms in a more practical and hands-on way. We rotated through different sessions that combined physical activity with learning, including guided exercises and interactive discussions that related to muscle groups, training principles, and body systems.

These activities were designed to link directly to the Factors Affecting Performance syllabus, giving us the chance to apply theoretical knowledge in a real-world setting, deepening my understanding of class content. The experience also gave me a better idea of how these concepts relate to the fitness industry and even helped me think about future pathways I might be interested in pursuing outside of school."

    -  Olivia Jolly, Year 12

When the going gets tough, the Italians get cooking!

Year 8 Italian students donned their chef outfits ready to take instructions from professional chef Luca Roncari and his team. The challenge was to create a chocolate-flavoured Italian dessert in the shape of a traditional salami. Your 60 minutes start now!

It was all hands on deck as the students followed his every instruction and participated in the Italian shouting of instructions and demonstrations for each step of the recipe – just like in a real restaurant kitchen. The students used their language skills to make sure that every step was followed and the end result was a delicious dessert that they can all now add to their cooking repertoire.

Thanks to all the Year 8 students who were so enthusiastic during the event and we look forward to doing some more hands-on tasks as we continue learning Italian.  Buon appetito!
