Term 2 - Week 4
A Message from the Principal

This week, I have been fortunate to attend the Association of Catholic Schools Principals Conference. This year, the theme was: Living Waters: Leading with Hope, Inspiring Faith Communities. One of the sessions I attended looked at something called the pruning principle. Whilst it was aimed at educators, I think it offers everyone something to think about.
At Bethany, we are constantly striving to support our young women to grow not only as learners, but as whole people. In a world that seems to praise being “busy” above being balanced, it’s easy to find ourselves being stretched thin—trying to do more, be more, and achieve more.
But what if more isn’t always the answer?
Educational thought leader Simon Breakspear offers a powerful idea called the Pruning Principle:
To grow and flourish, we must cut back what no longer serves us.
Just like a tree needs pruning to grow strong and healthy, we too need to pause and ask:
What in our lives is no longer serving its purpose? What can we let go of to make room for what truly matters?
This term, I’m inviting our students—and you as their families—to reflect on:
- What activities, habits, or commitments are adding stress, but not value?
- Are we trying to do too many things at once, and losing focus in the process?
- What might we gently step away from, to create space for rest, joy, or deeper engagement
For some, this might mean saying no to an extra commitment. For others, it could be reducing screen time, rethinking social pressures, or simplifying the daily routine. For all of us, it’s about intentional living, where we choose what helps us thrive—and prune what holds us back.
Growth doesn’t come from doing everything. It comes from doing the right things well.
Let’s be courageous enough to cut back—and kind enough to know that pruning is a sign of strength, not failure.
Last week, I had the privilege of reading each and every Year 11 and 12 report. I value the time taken to do this because it gives me a sense of progress for each girl and offers a time to affirm and also who may need greater guidance. I hope that the feedback received at the interviews on Monday evening was also valuable as a means to further improve. The girls listed below are to be congratulated on their consistency across their pattern of study.

From the Assistant Principal

It was wonderful to come together as a school community to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our senior students at the Semester 1 Academic Awards Assembly. The event was a wonderful opportunity to recognise the hard work, dedication, and academic excellence of our Year 11 and 12 students. Congratulations to all award recipients!
We were also delighted to have the opportunity to meet with so many parents at the Year 11 and 12 Parent-Teacher Interviews this week. The partnership between home and school is vital to student success, and it was heartening to witness so many meaningful conversations focused on learning progress and future goals.
Looking ahead, we have a number of important events on the horizon:
- Year 12 Retreat (Week 5 Wed - Fri)– A valuable time for reflection, connection, and preparation for the final stretch of their school journey.
- Year 10 Subject Selection Process – Students will soon begin exploring their options for senior studies. This process commences on Friday 31st May with Allwell and Careers testing. We encourage families to engage in these important discussions at home as the students embark of the next stage of their schooling journey.
- Staff Development Day – Friday 6th June – Please note that this will be a student-free day as staff engage in professional learning and planning.
I shared the Tell Them From Me survey information below this week via Compass. In the coming weeks we will be inviting students, teachers and parents to provide feedback on their experience of our school using an online survey. The surveys are an important part of our whole school evaluation and planning process.
We would like to invite you to complete the Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Partners in Learning survey. As we value the role of parents and carers within our school community we would greatly appreciate your feedback. The information you provide will be used to maintain our commitment to working together in partnership to further improve student learning and wellbeing at Bethany College.
The survey is anonymous and will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. You are able to access the parent survey on your computer or mobile device by using the URL below:

WINTER REMINDERS
I mentioned in the previous newsletter the rules regarding the use of mobile phones while at school. This will continue to be enforced to ensure the College meets the government regulations around mobile phones in NSW schools.
As we embark on the cooler months of the year a couple of reminders with regards to uniform:
- The College blazer is to be worn to and from school
- The College cardigan is not to worn as part of the sports uniform
- Blankets are not to be brought to school for classroom or playground
Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership.

PREPARING FOR PENTECOST: A CELEBRATION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
As we continue to rejoice in the Season of Easter, we anticipate the great feast of Pentecost, which falls this year on Sunday, 8 June 2025. Pentecost marks the 50th and final day of the Easter season, commemorating the moment when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles.
What is Pentecost?
Pentecost is often referred to as the "birthday of the Church" because it signifies the beginning of the Church’s mission to spread the Gospel to all nations. According to the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 2:1-4), the disciples were gathered in prayer when suddenly they were filled with the Holy Spirit, enabling them to speak in different languages and proclaim the Good News to people from all over the world.
Why is Pentecost important?
Pentecost is a transformative moment in Christian history. It reminds us that the Holy Spirit is always present, guiding and strengthening us in our faith. The Spirit empowers believers to live out their baptismal calling, spreading Christ’s love and mercy in their daily lives.
As we prepare for Pentecost, let us open our hearts to the Holy Spirit, allowing His presence to renew our faith and inspire us to be witnesses of Christ’s love in the world.
Let us pray: "Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful, and kindle in them the fire of Your love."

JUBILEE YEAR OF HOPE
The Jubilee Year of Hope invites us to reflect on the theme of pilgrimage - a journey of faith, hope, and renewal.
The Family Wellbeing & Education Team from Sydney Catholic Schools invites parents, carers, and grandparents to take part in a Parent Pilgrimage during this Jubilee Year – a time to step away from daily routines and walk in faith. Each pilgrimage offers a unique theme and experience, blending prayer, reflection, and community. Whether along the stunning coastline, in the heart of the city, or in preparation for Advent, these journeys will inspire and renew your spirit.
TERM 2 - Friday, June 13, 2025
Steps of Faith: A Pilgrimage of Strength and Spirit | St Brigid’s, Coogee & The Eileen O'Connor Centre
(Open to the first 50 Parents, Carers & Grandparents Only)
Our faith is a journey that calls us to move both physically and spiritually. Just as athletes train their bodies, we are invited to strengthen our souls through perseverance, trust, and prayer. This pilgrimage along the stunning coastal path will remind us that faith requires endurance, courage, and a heart open to the Holy Spirit. Inspired by the life of Eileen O’Connor, we will reflect on how small steps of faith can lead to great strength in God.

TERM 3 - Monday, September 15, 2025
Sacred Steps: A Pilgrimage of Healing and Hope | St Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney
(Open to the first 50 Parents, Carers & Grandparents Only)
Life’s journey is filled with joys and sorrows, triumphs and trials. Yet, even in suffering, Christ walks with us, offering healing and hope. This pilgrimage to St Mary’s Cathedral is a moment to pause, bring our burdens before the Lord in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and rediscover the peace found in His presence. The day will include a guided tour of the Cathedral by Fr Roberto Keryakos and a crypt tour led by Dr. Robert Haddad, offering a profound encounter with the rich history and faith of the Cathedral church of the Archdiocese of Sydney. Additionally, Fr William Chow will deliver an inspiring talk on the Jubilee of Hope and what it means for you and your family, encouraging us to embrace this sacred time with renewed faith and trust in God's promises.

TERM 4 - Saturday, November 15, 2025
Preparing Our Hearts: An Advent Retreat Pilgrimage of Hope and Renewal | St Catherine Labouré Church, Gymea
(Open to Parents, Carers, Grandparents, Parishioners & all SCS Staff)
As we prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ, we are reminded that Advent is a journey of the heart - an invitation to slow down, reflect, and make space for God’s presence in our lives. This retreat pilgrimage to St Catherine Labouré, Gymea is an opportunity to renew our hope, embrace the joy of the Gospel, and ready our hearts for the coming of Jesus. The day will include a presentation by Rev Dr Gregory Morgan PP, who will share practical tips on how to have the best Advent ever, helping us make the most of this holy season.

OUR LADY HELP OF CHRISTIANS MASS AT ST MARY'S CATHEDRAL
"On Friday 23rd May, I accompanied our junior students to St Mary’s Cathedral. They attended the Mass honouring Our Lady Help of Christians, the patron saint of Australia.
The Mass was celebrated by Bishop Richard Umbers, the Auxiliary Bishop Of Sydney, Many of the responses were sung and the Cathedral Choir filled the cathedral with their glorious voices. The girls were extremely reverent and were surprised to see so many students from various Catholic high schools and primary schools in attendance.
It was wonderful to be able to attend such a significant event during the Jubilee Year of Hope."

Students joined in the Chapel for Reconciliation and Mass. It was an opportunity for the students to encounter God in the Sacrament of forgiveness and Eucharist in this Jubilee Week.
Thursday - Rosary Bead Making
Students made Rosary Bead bracelets in the Library to wear and pray with.

Friday - Rosary
Students joined together in the Chapel to pray the Rosary the day before the Solemnity of Australia’s major patron - Our Lady, Help of Christians.

YEAR 12 WELLBEING DAY
Our Year 12 cohort had a fantastic time at the Wellbeing Day, as attested by all of the students and Alexia below.
Charlotte Buxton
Leader of Wellbeing
"Our Year 12 Wellbeing Day was a memorable and entertaining experience that truly embodied our grade’s value of wholeness. We began the day with a reflective and peaceful Mass at St Michael's Parish, which allowed us to pause and come together as a community. Following this, we walked together across Como Bridge to Como Pleasure Grounds, a picturesque walk that gave us time to chat and enjoy the surroundings.
Once we arrived, we paused to take in the bay and eat lunch and Mrs Bullock soon brought us to the inflatable obstacle course. We all got involved to best the course and each other, and this friendly competition created an enjoyable and hilarious atmosphere. After that, the teachers joined forces to create a homeroom colour run which coloured our white shirts with fluro orange, pink, green and more. Everyone was extremely colourful, with the dye on more than just shirts, in particular our vice captain, Harper, who found herself head to toe in pink dye.
The day was not only a break from our busy academic schedules, but a reminder of the strength and support within our year group. Everyone was vibrant—not only in colour, but spirit—and it was without a doubt one of the highlights of our final year."
Alexia Yalizis (Year 12)

Tocal College Scholarship Program
The College is extremely fortunate to have a very generous scholarship program. Our benefactors include community and farm industry organisations, employer groups, and alumni. Their greatly appreciated contributions allow up to 60% of our students to receive a scholarship to assist them with their regular College fees.
Scholarships vary in amount from $1,000 to $5,000 per student and are allocated by an Independent Scholarship Selection Panel. The main selection criterion is financial need, but other important considerations include likely contribution to community, dedication to studies and intended career path.
A single Scholarship Application Form is available which applies to all scholarships generally. A small number of scholarships have specific selection criteria requested by the benefactor which is usually associated with the applicant's chosen field of work. Unless otherwise stated, applications for the above scholarships close at the end of November. Successful applicants are notified in December/January. A covering letter providing information on the financial position of the applicant and their family (including taxable income) is recommended.
