    A message from the Principal

    YEAR 12 RETREAT
I had the privilege of attending the Year 12 Retreat for two days, an experience I valued immensely. It was a rare and meaningful opportunity to step away from the usual routines and work alongside an incredible group of dedicated teachers, all united in support of our senior students. Watching the Year 12s engage so openly and thoughtfully was truly inspiring.

At a time when many schools have let go of this tradition, we continue to see the profound value in offering our Year 12s the space to pause, breathe, and consider the journey ahead. This retreat is more than just a break from the classroom, it’s a vital part of their final year, fostering resilience, unity, and a deeper sense of purpose.

    RECONCILIATION WEEK
Our College joined communities across Australia in acknowledging Reconciliation week. This year's theme, "Bridging Now to Next," invites us to reflect on our shared history and move forward together towards a more just and inclusive future. We stopped and paused during Pastoral Care to learn about and celebrate the rich cultures, histories, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and to consider how each of us can contribute to strengthening relationships for the benefit of all Australians.

Lord, open up our hearts so that we may hear the message you teach of a world in which the wrongs of the past are recognised - a world in which a reconciled people walk and talk together sharing stories; a world in which all burn with the desire to have your peace and justice reign. We ask this in Jesus' name.

    - Aboriginal Catholic Ministry Victoria

    RESPECT
Over the last few weeks, there have been a few instances where students have challenged staff when given a reasonable instruction. These are often related to students being found using their phones during the school day, uniform infringements and in some cases, regarding the completion of class work during a lesson. As you can understand, students are asked to be respectful in their dealings with staff and when they are not, they are asked to reflect on their actions and be accepting of any consequences that come of their choices. Should this happen to your daughter, I ask for your support in helping her to better understand where she could have behaved differently and with any potential consequences that may have been given.

    NEWSLETTERS
From next term, we are looking to streamline some of our communication processes. With this in mind, we are moving to sending out a newsletter to our community 3 times a term, in Weeks 1, 5 and 10.

TELL THEM FROM ME SURVEY - REMINDER
A reminder that the Tell Them From Me Survey is open and closes Friday 13th June. The surveys are an important part of our whole school evaluation and planning process.

If you have not already done so we would like to invite you to complete the Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Partners in Learning survey. As we value the role of parents and carers within our school community we would greatly appreciate your feedback. The information you provide will be used to maintain our commitment to working together in partnership to further improve student learning and wellbeing at Bethany College.

The survey is anonymous and will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. You are able to access the parent survey on your computer or mobile device by using the URL below:

THE POWER OF OUR UNIFORM: MORE THEN JUST FABRIC
At Bethany, our uniform is more than just a dress code—it's a symbol of unity, pride, and purpose. When we wear our uniform, we demonstrate our values: respect, responsibility, and resilience.

Uniforms help create a sense of belonging. They remind us that we are part of something bigger—a community of learners, and leaders. They level the playing field, allowing each student to be seen for her character and contributions, not her clothing.

Wearing the uniform with pride also reflects our commitment to excellence. It shows that we are ready to learn, ready to lead, and ready to represent our school with dignity—whether in the classroom, on the sports field, or in the wider community.

Most importantly, our uniform is a daily reminder of our school motto: “Together We Serve.” It reflects our shared commitment to support one another, contribute to our community, and strive for collective success.

The staff continue to address students who wear incorrect uniform or do not meet the standards outlined in the College diary. With the colder months well and truly upon us now is a great time to purchase any cardigans or sports jackets that are needed to stay warm. Thank your for your continued support in working with the College to ensure that the uniform standards are being met by the girls.

YEAR 12 RETREAT  "I HAVE CALLED YOU BY NAME"
From Wednesday 28 May to Friday 30 May, our Year 12 students participated in their much-anticipated Retreat - a time to step away from the demands of daily school life and enter a space of reflection, connection, and faith.

Set in the peaceful beauty of nature, the retreat centred on the theme “I have called you by name, and you are mine” (Isaiah 43:1). This powerful scripture guided students as they explored the deeply personal truth that God calls each of us by name. Through prayer and small group discussions, students reflected on the meaning of their own names and stories.

In the Bible, a change in name often marks a new identity or mission. In the same way, students were invited to consider how, through Baptism, God calls each of us into a relationship - personally, uniquely, and intentionally. It was a powerful opportunity to reflect on what it means to be known, loved, and called by God.

On the final day, we were blessed to welcome Fr Brian and Fr Josh from St Declan’s Parish in Penshurst, who joined us to celebrate the Eucharist. This special Mass marked the culmination of the retreat, drawing together all that had been shared and experienced. As we gathered for the Eucharist, we gave thanks for the grace-filled days behind us - days spent reconnecting with ourselves, with one another, and with God. Fittingly, this Mass became more than just a conclusion — it was a beginning. An invitation to carry the light and love of Easter into the final months of Year 12 and beyond.

The retreat also made space for laughter, friendship, and simply being present - with God, with others, and with ourselves. It was a meaningful and memorable experience, one that reminded our students of who they are and the God who lovingly calls them by name.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the dedicated staff who accompanied our students and helped make this retreat possible. Their presence, care, and commitment were instrumental in creating a reflective space for our Year 12 students.

ST VINCENT DE PAUL - NIGHT PATROL
Students at Bethany College have a strong connection to the St Vincent de Paul Society, assisting each year with the Winter Appeal, Christmas Appeal and Night Patrol. Students have an opportunity to help those who are in need in their own backyard.

Staff and Year 12 Students have been volunteering with Vinnies Night Patrol this year. Once a month the Night Patrol Van goes out to different housing precincts around Bayside. Residents can receive free sandwiches made by Bethany students and tea and coffee.

VINNIES WINTER APPEAL 2025 - "NO ONE CHOOSES TO BE HOMELESS"
Vinnies NSW supports tens of thousands of individuals and families each year who are experiencing financial and housing insecurity. This year, our Winter Appeal theme will be “no one chooses to be homeless”, focusing on addressing homelessness, highlighting the factors that lead to homelessness and the support needed to recover and rebuild over the long-term of experiencing homelessness.

The Vinnies Winter Appeal plays a major role in ensuring our Members and Volunteers can continue to provide support to the people we assist and that our services are able to meet their individual needs.

Bethany College will be taking donations for the Vinnies Winter Appeal in Weeks 8 and 9. If families could please purchase items requested by Hurstville Vinnies Support Centre as listed below. Our library can support your daughter’s learning through our free tutoring service, which is currently available from Monday to Thursday 3-4pm. Our tutors are past students and can assist your daughter with a variety of subjects from Year 7-12.

Below is the timetable for our tutors. They can spend as little or as much time as they need and do not need to make a booking. Students who have used the service have found it extremely beneficial with understanding difficult concepts, starting or improving their assignments or suggesting study tips to prepare them for upcoming exams.

MIND MAPPING FOR MEMORY - UNLEASHING THE POWER OF VISUAL LEARNING
Are you tired of feeling overwhelmed by long, wordy notes? Do you struggle to see the connections between topics? Mind mapping is a creative and effective way to organise information, making it easier to remember and understand. By visually mapping out your ideas, you can turn even the most complex topics into a clear and engaging picture.

    1. Start with the Central Idea
A mind map begins with a central concept. Write this main topic in the centre of a blank page and draw a circle or bubble around it. This could be something broad, like ‘Climate Change’, or specific, like ‘The Nervous System’.

From the central idea, draw branches radiating outward. Each branch represents a subtopic, such as ‘Greenhouse Gases’ or ‘The Brain’. These branches form the foundation of your map.

Tip: Use bold, colourful text for your central idea to make it stand out and signal its importance.

    2. Add Key Details and Connections
Once your main branches are in place, start adding smaller branches to include key details. For example:

    • Under ‘Greenhouse Gases’, you might add ‘Carbon Dioxide’, ‘Methane’, and ‘Sources of Emissions’.
    • Under ‘The Brain’, you could include ‘Cerebrum’, ‘Cerebellum’, and ‘Functions’.

Include only essential information—keep it brief and clear. Mind maps work best when they’re concise.

Tip: Use arrows or lines to connect related ideas, such as linking ‘Methane’ to ‘Livestock Agriculture.’ These connections make the map more dynamic and meaningful.

    3. Make It Visual
Visual elements are what make mind maps so powerful. Incorporate symbols, doodles, or images to make ideas pop. For example:

    • Draw a small sun near ‘Solar Energy’ or a brain near ‘Nervous System.’
    • Use different colours for each main branch to visually separate topics.

Tip: This approach doesn’t just make your map more appealing—it also aids memory. Studies show that visual and spatial information sticks in your brain more effectively than plain text.

    4. Tailor Your Map to Your Needs
Mind maps can be used for:

    • Summarising notes: Condense an entire topic into a single, organised map.
    • Brainstorming: Generate and organize ideas for essays or projects.
    • Studying: Highlight key terms and connections before exams.

Tip: Experiment with digital tools like Canva, MindMeister, or even the drawing features in apps like OneNote for a high-tech version.

    See the Big Picture
Mind maps are a versatile tool that transforms how you study and learn. By visually organising information, they help you see the ‘big picture’ while making key details easier to recall. Whether you’re summarising a textbook chapter, brainstorming ideas, or preparing for exams, mind mapping is your secret weapon for success. Grab some paper—or a tablet—and start mapping your way to better memory.

SORRY AND RECONCILIATION WEEK | MAY 26 - JUNE 3
To mark this nationally significant week, students at Bethany participated in a variety of activities during their pastoral care classes. They were provided information about the origins of Sorry day and Reconciliation week, including Kevin Rudd’s historic “Sorry” speech from 2008. Students also engaged with the 2025 logo (“Bridging now to next”) and artwork featuring native Australian plants.

    RECONCILIATION EVENT
During Reconciliation week, a group of students attended a schools forum at Rockdale Town Hall. We heard from 1965 Freedom Rider Ann Curthoys, as she shared her experiences and insights into the significance of the Freedom Ride - both then and now. We also listened to local Traditional Elder and Chair of the Bayside RAP (Reconciliation Action Plan) Committee, Aunty Barb Simms, who spoke about Bayside’s ongoing reconciliation journey. Aunty Barb shared her personal story of growing up on the mission in La Perouse, the challenges she has had to overcome, and how her commitment to sharing cultural knowledge continues to drive her work today.

Interestingly, during the introductory video that was shown, Amelia Bates (Year 10) recognised some of her artwork that was used in the video. In 2020, Amelia won the Bayside First Nations art competition with the artwork below. We have since learnt that Amelia’s original painting hangs in the manager's office at Bayside council and has also been used in promotional campaigns at Bayside. This is a beautiful work of art and we are very proud of Amelia!

"Last week, I was fortunate to attend the Bayside council RAP event during Reconciliation week. It was very encouraging to see the leaders of Bayside Council and Aboriginal Elders explaining their stories from the Freedom Rides, as well as to listen to what it was like to grow up on a mission in La Perouse.  We also learnt lots of information about what the council is doing through RAP to better the lives of the local indigenous communities."

5 things you need to know about SRS
The Schools Recommendation Scheme (SRS) is one way Year 12 students can receive an early offer to university. Through SRS, universities can make offers to students based on criteria other than the ATAR, including their Year 11 results and their school’s recommendation.

Not every university participates in the SRS and not every course is eligible, so you will need to check each institution’s criteria. Offers are made before ATARs are released, but in many cases, the offer will be conditional – you may still need to meet subject or ATAR requirements.

Finding strength in kindness - Kath Koschel's inspiring story

We were privileged to host Kath Koshcel recently at the College. Kath spoke to Year 11 and 12 about her remarkable life’s journey and her even more incredible resilience and strength in the face of life changing events. Kath has used her adversity to create true change.

"On Tuesday the 3rd of June, Year 11 and 12 had the privilege of hearing from Kath Koschel, a remarkable speaker whose story left a lasting impact on everyone in the room. Through her heartfelt presentation, Kath reminded us of the power of resilience, hope, and most importantly...kindness.

A former elite athlete whose career was cut short by a life altering accident, Kath’s journey has been anything but easy. However, instead of allowing adversity to define her, she chose to rise above it. She spoke openly about facing immense physical and emotional pain, including the loss of loved ones as well as learning to walk again after a spinal injury. Yet through all this, Kath discovered something extraordinary: The human capacity for kindness in the face of hardship.

Her message was clear: no act of kindness is too small. Kath encouraged all of us to carry that spirit forward, not just in moments of crisis, but in everyday life. Kath’s visit was a reminder of what we’re all capable of when we lead with empathy and choose kindness."

    - Larissa Bazgalovski (Year 12)

"On Tuesday, Year 11 and 12 had the amazing opportunity to hear the empowering and compelling story of 2024 NSW Australian of the year, Kath Koschel! Kath shared with us her incredible story of strength through tragedy and adversity. As the founder of 'The Kindness Factory', she taught us the profound role kindness played in overcoming the major struggles she had faced, inspiring us to seek resilience and joy even through life's hardships.

Her story undoubtedly had us all in awe of her unparalleled strength and ability to remain kind no matter the circumstances, leaving us all striving to reflect these qualities in our own lives.

Thank you Kath Koschel for your time and your valuable lessons, we really appreciated your story!!"

    - Aleksia Howley (Year 11)

"It was truly amazing to have been able to see Kath Kotchel, the Australian of the Year! The adversity she faced and the resilience she developed as a result is highly inspiring for all of us, and I know the girls took a lot from her talk. Her messages around the power of kindness were very touching, challenging us to go that extra step for the people around us."

    - Anastasia Bourtzos (Year 11)

"Kath Koschel is a woman of resilience. On Tuesday we got the privilege to hear from her and learn about her story, From being paralysed twice, to losing the love of her life, Kath has portrayed that life isn't what is expected and anything can happen, but she also taught us that with these hardships comes greatness, and no matter what happens we should always place kindness first. Hearing Kath's story, we were able to reflect and think about how we can go about life and show the same amount of resilience and kindness as Kath does daily. It was an absolute honour to hear and learn from her."

     - Anastasia Harapas (Year 11)

Anxiety is a common mental health challenge among teenagers, often triggered by academic pressures, social dynamics, and the transition to adulthood. Teens with anxiety may experience excessive worry, restlessness, difficulty concentrating, and physical symptoms like headaches or stomach aches. While occasional anxiety is normal, persistent or intense feelings can interfere with daily life. Early recognition and support from parents, teachers, and mental health professionals are crucial in helping teenagers manage anxiety and build healthy coping strategies.

Year 9 PDHPE - Wheelchair Basketball

"On May 26th and 27th, Year 9 students had the opportunity to participate in the ACT/NSW Wheelchair Basketball Sports program, an engaging 1.5-hour incursion that provided both an enjoyable and educational experience. Throughout the session, students built new friendships and strengthened their teamwork skills while gaining a deeper understanding of the hardships people with disabilities are subjected to and the ways they overcome adversity.

Through multiple games of wheelchair basketball, students were able to appreciate how individuals with disabilities actively participate in sports, breaking down misconceptions and fostering inclusivity. The experience was made even more rewarding by the guidance of our coach, Brendon, whose enthusiasm and support made the session both fun and insightful. The program perfectly aligned with our PDHPE curriculum, reinforcing our learning about how people with disabilities navigate daily life and the ways in which society can better support them. Overall, it was a remarkable and meaningful experience that left a lasting impact on all participants."

    - Olivia Angelopulos & Tiffany Wang (Year 9)

Talented Students Day - Maths Competition

On Tuesday the 20th of May 2025, the Year 11 Mathematics Extension 1 class participated in a Talented Students day maths competition at Sydney Tech High School.  The students that participated were Hunter Howesmith, Natalya Josephakis, Emily Kolaroska, Stella Nottage and Nikita Yeremeyev, and we competed against all the local Catholic, Independent and State schools, including the three selective schools - St George Girls, Caringbah High and of course Sydney Tech itself.

This day, filled with different maths challenges including a maths crossword and relay, which allowed the students to interact and compete against other schools, putting their maths knowledge to the test in the absence of a calculator.

The girls had great fun calling it “a wonderful opportunity” with “hard, but enjoyable questions that tested their skills”. Despite perseverance and hard work the girls didn’t make it to the top three, however they finished the day feeling proud of their achievements and resilience.
