Term 2 - Week 8
A message from the Principal

Whether in our families, friendship groups, community groups or workplaces, respectful relationships are at the heart of people and groups being able to flourish.
Within the school context, young people are learning how to engage respectfully with peers, family, community groups, and in the world of work. Much of this is understood by young people as they listen to and watch interactions between people. Different perspectives and ways of thinking strengthen families, friendship groups and workplaces including schools. Learning how to respectfully engage in dialogue where different perspectives are brought to the table is an important life skill and an essential element for growth and improvement.
At the heart of respectful relationships is how we see ourselves, other people and the world we live in. At Bethany, we see each person as a part of God’s creation, each uniquely gifted to make a difference and each with a common responsibility to care for ourselves, other people and the environment.
Jesus gave us the command to love one another as ourselves, emphasising selflessness, compassion, and unconditional care. This commandment encourages believers to practise kindness, forgiveness, and empathy in their interactions.
This week I have been witness to several interactions between members of our community that have been wonderful examples of love, care and empathy:
- I watched one of our students take time out of her day to help another who was really struggling.
- The growing donations to our Winter Appeal.
- The students who immediately volunteered to help with something when the group was asked.
- There was a visit by staff and students to the elderly members of our community at the nursing home next door.
- Our staff continue to give of their time, providing opportunities for all our students to feel connected through the different clubs they run during their break time.
- This Friday, some staff and students will attend Vinnie’s Night Patrol, assisting vulnerable people in our wider community.
- Youth Mass at St Michael’s Church is this Sunday evening, led by students and coordinated and prepared by our staff.
These are wonderful actions that all help build respectful relationships and a testament to the beautiful community that exists at Bethany.
DEBATING UPDATE
Over the last few Friday evenings, I have had the privilege of watching our senior debating teams march their way to the Semi-Finals of the CDSA Debating Competition. With close to 100 Catholic Schools involved in the competition, it is an outstanding achievement to make it to the top four of the competition. To have two teams compete at this level is amazing and we are so proud of the girls. This Friday, the Year 11 team will debate Mercy College, Chatswood and our Year 12s will battle it out against St Mary’s Cathedral College.
None of this happens, though, without the dedicated coaches who guided and supported our students: Mrs Riley, Mr Chapman; Ms Carruthers, and Ms Woo and our amazing Debating Coordinator, Ms Issa. Thank you for the work, energy and commitment to our students.
REPORTS AND PARENT / TEACHER / STUDENT INTERVIEWS
Over the last few weeks, I have had the pleasure of reading all the student reports across Years 7 - 10. As a teacher who only has Year 12 classes this year, reading the reports helps me to get to know our students and how they are learning in the classroom. Our staff have done an incredible job to teach, assess and give feedback to your daughters so they can better understand how to move their learning forward. There is much to celebrate in these report as well as opportunities for reflection and goal setting.
Reports will be published next Friday but as you know, interview bookings have already opened. I encourage you to make time to speak with your daughter’s teachers. It is an opportunity to work together for the benefit of your girl.
WALK WITH CHRIST EUCHARISTIC PROCESSION
Walk with Christ is Sydney’s annual Eucharistic Procession held on the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, honouring the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Christ. It serves as a public witness and act of worship, described in the Directory of Popular Piety and the Liturgy as “a continuation of the Eucharistic celebration, allowing the faithful to publicly profess their faith in the Most Blessed Sacrament”.
Join Catholics from across Sydney for this year’s Walk With Christ on 22nd of June 2025.
- Festival from 1:00pm in Martin Place
- The procession will begin at 2:30pm sharp from the corner of Martin Place

RESPECT: THE HEART OF OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY
At Tuesday’s College Assembly I spoke to the girls about the value of respect. At the core of a thriving school environment is respect—a value that shapes how we treat ourselves, others, and the spaces we share.
Respect begins with the way we present ourselves. Wearing our school uniform with pride shows that we value our identity and are ready to contribute positively to our community. It’s a simple but powerful way to say, “I belong here, and I care.”
It also means keeping our school clean and safe. Respecting our environment by picking up litter, caring for shared spaces, and using resources responsibly helps everyone feel welcome and comfortable.
In our relationships, respect is shown through kindness, listening, and valuing each other’s differences. Whether we’re working in teams, playing on the field, or chatting with friends, treating others with dignity builds trust and connection.
And when we make mistakes—as we all do—respect means accepting responsibility and responding with maturity when we’re challenged. It’s about learning, growing, and showing that we value the guidance of those who help us become better.
As we move towards the end of the first semester and look forward to the second half of the year I challenge the girls to look to maintain not only their academic growth but also as young women who demonstrate respect in all areas of their lives.

YEAR 7 SPIRITUALITY DAY:
EMBRACING THE POWER OF RELATIONSHIPS
On Friday 13 June, our Year 7 students gathered for a meaningful Spirituality Day, focusing on the value of relationships; with God, others, and self. It was a day filled with reflection, and opportunities for character and spiritual growth.
The day commenced with Mass at St Michael’s Parish at 9 am. Following this, students engaged in a session led by Cheryl Fernandez from the Mission and Identity team at Sydney Catholic Schools. Cheryl spoke passionately about the importance of making choices and saying "Yes" to God, emphasising how embracing faith can open doors to countless opportunities for growth.
Students also learned about Carlo Acutis, a remarkable young man whose deep faith and commitment to sharing God’s message continue to inspire people worldwide. His example in modern times served as a powerful reminder that holiness is attainable in everyday life, through acts of kindness, devotion, and service.
The day concluded with prayer and reflection, allowing students to ponder their experiences and commit to strengthening their relationships; with God, with one another, and within themselves. The Year 7 Spirituality Day was a truly enriching experience, encouraging students to deepen their faith and embrace the power of relationships in all aspects of their lives.

10:10 YOUTH NIGHT
33 girls from Bethany joined another 80 students from around Sydney Archdiocese for the 10:10 Youth Night last Friday. The evening included dinner, games, a talk and testimony and concluded with confession and adoration at St Michael’s. The students had a fun and enjoyable experience but were also touched by the time of prayer before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and receiving his mercy in confession.

10:10 PROJECT CONTINUES
About 40 year 10 girls continue to participate in the 10:10 Project after school. In the fourth session of the 10:10 Program, students explored the characteristics of love as free, total, faithful, and fruitful, as exemplified in the life of Christ. They learned that marriage is the only context where sexual intimacy can fully embody these qualities. The session also differentiated between self-seeking sexual activity and self-giving love, presenting Mary as the perfect model of receiving God’s love.
The session highlighted that the love between a husband and wife, when total and self-giving, reflects God’s love for us. It reinforced the idea that marital consent, given freely and without coercion, is a profound expression of this love.
See you for Session 5 on Tuesday, 12 August from 3:00 – 4:00 pm.

SEMESTER TWO REPORTS
As the end of the academic semester approaches, we are eagerly preparing to publish student reports for Years 7 to 10. This is an opportunity to reflect on the incredible growth and achievements our students have made throughout the term. We would like to provide you with some valuable insights and suggestions on how to support your child during this important phase.

- Celebrate Progress: It's important to remember that they are not just a reflection of grades, but also a testament to their growth, effort, and engagement. Take the time to celebrate your child's progress, acknowledging their accomplishments and the areas where they have shown improvement. A positive and encouraging approach helps build their self-esteem and motivation.
- Encourage Reflection: Reports provide an opportunity for students to reflect on their own learning experiences. Encourage your child to review their report with you, discussing their strengths, areas for growth, and any goals they may want to set for the future. This reflection process helps them gain a deeper understanding of their learning journey and fosters a sense of ownership over their education.
- Set Realistic Expectations: It's essential to set realistic expectations for your child's progress. While high aspirations are commendable, it's important to recognize that every student has their own unique pace and learning style. Use the report as a guide to identify areas that may need additional attention or support, and work together with your child and their teachers to develop a plan for improvement.
- Open Communication with Teachers: Building a strong partnership between parents and teachers is crucial for student success. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child's report, ensure you book a meeting at the upcoming parent student teacher interviews. They can provide valuable insights, clarify any information, and offer guidance on how to further support your child's learning.
- Focus on the Whole Child: While academic progress is important, it's equally vital to consider your child's holistic development. Encourage their involvement in extracurricular activities, social interactions, and the pursuit of their passions. A well-rounded education encompasses not only academic achievements but also the development of social-emotional skills, creativity, and resilience.
PARENT / STUDENT / TEACHER INTERVIEWS
Parent/Student/Teacher interviews will be held for Years 7 to 10 as follows:
- Wednesday 2 July in the College Classrooms
- Thursday 3 July 2024 in the College Classrooms and on Zoom platform
- Friday 5 July interviews will be held using Zoom platform only from 9.00am to 1.30pm

Access to the booking system was available from 2.30pm on Monday 16th June, 2025 via the Compass app, under “conferences”. Booking will close at 3.00pm on Monday, 30th June.
For the Zoom interviews, parents/Caregivers are required to use their daughter's laptop and sydstu email address to login to the Zoom platform. Once logged in you will need to access the specific teacher URL at the designated interview time. The teacher meeting URL's will be made available via a Google sheet sent to your daughter prior to interviews.
Parent student teacher interviews provide a valuable opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations with your child's teachers. These conversations offer insights into your child's progress, strengths, areas for improvement, and strategies for further growth. By participating in these interviews, you become an integral part of your child's support network, working hand in hand with our dedicated educators to maximise their potential.
ATOMI - STUDY SKILLS
Atomi is an online learning platform that students and teachers utilise here at Bethany. Created by leading teachers, expert designers and top students, Atomi helps your child understand their content and what it takes to get results. Whilst it has numerous valuable learning resources for your child there are also resources to assist parents to support their child on their high school journey. Access to a number of resources can be found here. We encourage parents to explore these resources and discuss with your daughter how they use this valuable learning tool.

HOLIDAY HSC WORKSHOPS
Sydney Catholic Schools is offering Yr12 students free workshops in Chemistry, Economics, English (Advanced and Ext 1), Maths (Adv and Ext 1), Modern History and Physics,. These will occur online at various times throughout the upcoming school holidays.
If your daughter is part of these classes we encourage them to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity.
They will need to speak to their teacher to have them registered for the sessions.

Wellbeing Update

Between weeks 6 - 9 we will continue to honour the patrons of Bethany College with a fun celebration featuring a variety of activities across the College campus.
This event has served as both a tribute to their enduring legacy and an opportunity for students and staff to come together in community and celebration.
OODGEROO WEEK (Week 6)

The week kicked off with Oodgeroo Week to celebrate the life of Oodgeroo Noonuccal (Kath Walker), an Indigenous Poet and Rights Advocate. In honour of her work in advocacy, our Debating Captain, Mairead McAllister, and Debating Coordinator, Mrs Priscilla Issa, organised a Staff vs Student Debate. The topic was: "That ChatGPT is more ally than adversary.”
The students argued the affirmative while the teachers were the negative. After much debate, the students ultimately came out the winners! Hopefully next year the teachers can defeat the mighty Year 12 Debaters!

MELBA WEEK (Week 7)

Dame Nellie Melba was an internationally renowned Opera singer who was the first international artist to be aired on radio. So naturally, Melba Week celebrated everything music. Alleah Kapsalakis and Chiara da Silva of Year 9 performed for students at Recess and Lunch creating a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.
The week peaked with our first ever Masked Singer concert where students had to guess the teacher singing behind the mask. We were all charmed by the singing of Winnie the Pooh (Mr Paff), the Pink Teletubbie (Mr Colreavy), Dorothy the Dinosaur (Mrs Sladen), the Yellow Teletubbie (Ms Kyriacou), the Green Teletubbie (Ms Moncrieff) and the Red Teletubbie (Ms Bartels).
A special shout-out goes to our student judges Kyara Carillo Martinez, Orla McNally, Andromache Papas and Angel Youkhanna, who managed to correctly guess the identity of every singer! Their detective skills were truly impressive.
Thanks also to Emily Haddad, Catherine Smith and Harper Bollard who MC’d the event - and also provided technical support along the way. Thanks also to Wags the Dog (Mrs Kelly) and Minnie Mouse (Ms Fsadni) who cheered them along and Ms Riley who donned the Yellow Teletubbie on the yard on Thursday with some of the teachers above, as well as some of our Year 12 students. Lots of fun was had by the students over these two days!
To celebrate our House weeks, we also have Wednesday morning Breakfast Club each week. Students have the opportunity to purchase hot chocolate, loaded waffles and brioche bread. Additionally, we had a bake sale in Melba week where students and families very generously donated some delicious snacks. All monies raised will be going to the Catholic Education Foundation.
In the next newsletter we will reflect on Franklin and Kellerman weeks and in Week 10 we have a homeroom quiz based on questions about our House patrons. Stay tuned for the homeroom winner and also for the amount of money raised in our fundraisers this term.

UAC
5 things you need to know about SRS
The Schools Recommendation Scheme (SRS) is one way Year 12 students can receive an early offer to university. Through SRS, universities can make offers to students based on criteria other than the ATAR, including their Year 11 results and their school’s recommendation.
Not every university participates in the SRS and not every course is eligible, so you will need to check each institution’s criteria. Offers are made before ATARs are released, but in many cases, the offer will be conditional – you may still need to meet subject or ATAR requirements.
Three schemes to help you get to university
UAC works with universities to widen participation in higher education. In particular, UAC runs three schemes to help thousands of people access their potential through higher education.
- Educational Access Scheme: helps UAC applicants who have experienced significant educational challenges.
- Equity Scholarships: awarded to applicants who demonstrate the greatest financial need.
- Schools Recommendation Scheme: an opportunity for Year 12 applicants to be assessed on criteria other than, or in addition to, the ATAR.

Year 12 English Standard and Studies Creative Writing Incursion
"The creative writing incursion led by acclaimed young adult author Will Kostakis proved immensely valuable in enriching our study of Module C: The Craft of Writing. His dynamic session highlighted the power of words and the impact of writing with purpose, inspiring students to craft work that is not only technical but also rich in meaning.
Will encouraged us to move beyond simply telling stories. He challenged us to write with intention. Through thoughtful discussion, he noted core concepts such as the power of a small premise and the deliberate use of literary devices, not just as stylistic choices, but as powerful tools for expressing complex ideas in compelling ways.
The session was highly engaging, with some students even receiving signed copies of his novels! More than just a lesson in technique, Will’s visit deepened our understanding of how to create stories which resonate. As a result, the English Standard cohort now feels more confident in creating pieces that explore the human experience with authenticity and insight."
- Charlotte Giamboi & Francesca Konstandoulias (Year 12 - English Standard)
