Term 2 - Week 10
A Message from the Principal

As we bid farewell to Term 2, I've been reflecting on the accomplishments and growth we've witnessed within our school community. Many students have shown commitment to excellence in both their academic pursuits and extracurricular activities. I particularly enjoyed attending Year assemblies and distributing Principal’s Awards for Excellence during Semester 1. Our girls are working hard, as evidenced by the number of Principal’s, Academic Achievement and Academic Effort awards that have been given out over the last few days.
It is not just academics where our girls' talents have shined. Just last week, our Junior and Intermediate Football teams were Conference Champions and went through to the Quarter Finals of the Sydney Conference. Our Junior team were unsuccessful yesterday but put in a determined performance in tough, windy conditions. They are to be congratulated for an outstanding season. Our Intermediate team had an amazing win against Good Samaritan Catholic College and now progress through to the Semi Finals.
Bethany College’s Athletics Carnival was a vibrant showcase of school spirit, athletic talent, and creative flair. Alongside the fierce competition on the track and field, the day was filled with laughter, house pride, and a strong sense of community. It was a celebration of both tradition and energy, making it a standout event on our school calendar. I look forward to seeing our girls progress to the next level of competition.

Our Year 11 and Year 12 Debating teams made it to the Semi-Finals of the CSDA Debating Competition, competing against close to 100 Catholic schools to get to the top 4 in each year group. In the performing arts, our Year 11 Music class participated in the SCS Eisteddfod in the contemporary music ensemble category.
With months of rehearsals and practice under their belts, the girls presented Teeth by 5SOS and were awarded first place! In addition the Bethany College Choir attended the SCS Secondary Large Vocal Ensemble Eisteddfod at St Patricks College, Sutherland. Performing two pieces, 'Kumbalawe' from Cirque Du Soleil and 'Never Seen the Rain' by Tones and I. Again, our girls placed first and have secured a spot in the Sydney Catholic Schools Eisteddfod Showcase, performing early next term at the Seymour Centre.

Finally, this week we said farewell to Fr Janusz from St Michael’s parish, as he takes up a position at Our Lady of Victories, Horsley Park.
Thank you Father Janusz for the many Masses you’ve celebrated with our community over the past 12 years, for making the Sacrament of Reconciliation available and for offering your spiritual guidance. Your presence has deeply impacted our students, staff, and families. We wish you every blessing as you begin your new role.

PRINCIPALS AWARDS - SEMESTER 1

I trust that all families will enjoy a wonderful term break and I look forward to Term 3 with great anticipation.
Kristina Flanagan

From the Assistant Principal

As we close the chapter on a successful first semester, I wanted to extend my thanks to our entire school community—students, parents, and staff—for your dedication, enthusiasm, and support throughout the term. It’s been a semester filled with learning, growth, and memorable moments, and we couldn’t have done it without you.
We had the opportunity to acknowledge our Semester 1 7-10 Academic Award recipients on Tuesday. Congratulations to all our award winners! Is is wonderful to be able to recognise your hard work, perseverance, and commitment to excellence, and we are incredibly proud of your achievements.
A special thank you to all families who attended this week's Parent-Teacher Interviews. Your engagement plays a vital role in your child’s academic journey. Research consistently shows that when parents are actively involved in their child’s education, students achieve better academic outcomes, develop stronger learning habits, and feel more supported both at school and at home.
Finally a thank you from me personally on how welcoming the community here at Bethany has been over my first two terms. I am very grateful to have been given the opportunity to continue in the position permanently and look forward to a great second semester. Enjoy the holidays!

NAPLAN
NAPLAN results for the year 2025 will be sent home at the start of Term 3. NAPLAN, as you know, is an important national assessment that provides valuable insights into your child's literacy and numeracy skills, helping us tailor our educational approach to better meet their needs.
NAPLAN 2025 results will be reported against four proficiency levels:
- Exceeding - the student’s result exceeds expectations at the time of testing.
- Strong - the student’s result meets challenging but reasonable expectations at the time of testing.
- Developing - the student’s result indicates that they are working towards expectations at the time of testing.
- Needs additional support - the student’s result indicates that they are not achieving the learning outcomes expected at the time of testing. They are likely to need additional support to progress satisfactorily.
Below is an example of what the results will look like.

When the results arrive we encourage you to take some time to review your child's NAPLAN 2025 results with them and discuss their achievements. If you require any further information please do not hesitate in contacting the college.
MID-YEAR CHECK-UP
As we approach the second semester now is a good time to do a bit of a check-up to see if students can improve their approach to their learning. Parents, you may like to go through these questions with your child and together set goals for Semester 2.

- Have you set yourself goals to strive for during this year?
- Do you know what motivates you to learn and complete your work for school?
- Do you try to take a positive approach to school and your studies?
- Do you make the most of class time, listening and focusing and completing all work?

- Have you been writing all your homework into your diary or online planner and getting it done?
- Have you been breaking down bigger tasks and scheduling the work in your diary/planner?
- Have you been keeping track of what you complete and rescheduling unfinished work?
- Have you organised your folders for papers and digital resources for school?
- Do you have folders or somewhere at home to file away all your work and notes for your topics?
- Have you been working on study notes each time you finish a topic for a subject?
- Do you have a term planner above your desk where you can easily see when work is due?
- Have you set up a good study environment at home, a place where you can focus and work?
- Are you doing around an hour and a half of schoolwork most nights (2-3 hrs for seniors)?
- Have you thought realistically about whether you have too many outside school activities?
- Have you allocated set periods of time for school work (eg at least 3 x half hour blocks)?
- Do you remove all distractions etc. when you are focusing on your schoolwork at home?
- Do you prioritise each afternoon what you will work on that night?
- When you make study notes, are you making them visual with mind maps, highlighting etc?

In Week 9, our Junior and Intermediate Football teams competed in the Conference 3 Grand Finals at Ilinden Sports Centre.
The Junior team played against Marist Penshurst. It was an evenly matched game, ending in a 1-1 draw at the end of regular time, sending them into a penalty shoot out.
Taylar Reed, Sofia Testor, Bianca Naumovski, Ava Kartambis, Estelle Tsilinikos, Calista Kartambis, Lucia Barbaresco and Eleni Anegelopoulos all slotted their kicks through!
Estelle Tsilinikos was the team's goal keeper and after an early save that was overruled for stepping over the line, she made an awesome save on the 8th shot from Marist Penshurst, claiming the win 8-7 for Bethany! The team will progress to the Sydney Championship Quarter Finals in Week 10.

The Intermediate team played against St Patrick's Sutherland. The match was tough, but Bethany took an early lead 1-0 going into the second half. Late in the second half, St Pat's scored, tying things up. With a few minutes remaining, Bethany were able to score another goal, securing the win! Congratulations to Natalia Busevski and Genevieve Estmore who scored the goals.

In Week 10, both teams competed in the Sydney Quarter Finals.
The Junior team played against Clancy Catholic College, West Hoxton. They put in a determined performance in tough, windy conditions, narrowly going down 1–0 in a closely contested match. The team displayed great resilience and teamwork and should be so proud for making it this far in the competition.
The Intermediate team played against Good Samaritan, Hinchinbrook. They delivered an outstanding performance, securing a dominant 8–0 victory. With a full team effort on display, they now advance to the Conference Semi Finals in Week 1 of Term 3. Congratulations to all players, and coach Mr Devlin, and best of luck in the next stage!

MELISSA McGUINNESS FROM "YOU CHOOSE"
Years 10 and 11 had the opportunity in Week 9 to listen to Melissa McGuinness’ significant message about responsibility, owning choices and the impact of actions upon others, particularly the ones that we love. Melissa and her husband created the “You Choose” foundation, a not-for-profit organisation that seeks to educate young people through their school programs that one's intentions are irrelevant if they cause harm to self or others. Students are challenged to give each other permission in advance to speak up and to act in favour of good choices in moments-that-matter; and to genuinely understand how impulsivity and passivity block intentions from actions.

On Thursday the 26th June, Melissa McGuinness, who founded YOU CHOOSE, a non-profit program made to advocate for youth road safety, came to Bethany College to talk to the Year 10 and Year 11 students.
Melissa spoke about her story, and her son's story. She told us about how her son had been involved in a car crash caused by his own drink driving, which took the lives of four people, and his own. Melissa explained that she wasn't seeking sympathy, but instead wanted us to look at his actions so we do not end up in that situation. Melissa's presentation is one I think we could listen to several times and still walk out of the room thinking about future actions. The manner in which she speaks to the audience about her own trauma left the room speechless and is absolutely inspirational.
A big thank you to Melissa McGuinness for sharing her story with us, and highlighting the realities of what our own actions can cause, and a bigger thank you to Ms Buxton for organising such an amazing experience which words truly can't justify.
Kyara Carillo Martinez (Year 11)
It was both an honour and a pleasure to have Melissa McGuinness of the You choose program come to Bethany College on the 26th of June. She shared a harrowing and real life event to Year 10 and 11 which brought tears to our large crowd. Her words definitely tugged on our heartstrings and helped us to understand the importance of making our own choices. Mrs McGuinness spoke with us about the importance of road safety as well as the consequences of our actions. It was a truly inspiring and heartfelt program that will benefit us for years to come. On behalf of Year 10 and 11, we appreciate Mrs McGuinness coming in and sharing her story with us because it truly moved us all. To shed light on her program, as students, we can blog it on our social media, or tell friends from other schools to raise awareness for this beautiful campaign.

HOUSE WEEKS AT BETHANY
Weeks 8 and 9 were dedicated to celebrating our House Patrons of Franklin and Kellerman.
FRANKLIN WEEK (WEEK 8)
Miles Franklin was born in country NSW and was a pioneering author and feminist. She wrote her most famous work, “My Brilliant Career” at just 21 years old. Have you ever noticed the memorial to her at Hurstville (near the library) pictured below?

During Franklin week, the students were immersed in library activities such as bookmark making and a second hand book sale with bargains galore. During Term 3 the inaugural Bethany Spelling Bee will be held.
Some of the beautiful bookmarks made during Franklin week:

KELLERMAN WEEK (WEEK 9)
Annette Kellerman was a swimmer, Hollywood movie star, author and health advocate. As such, the Athletics carnival was held in Kellerman week. Despite the rain, students enjoyed a fun day at E.S. Marks Athletic field dressed in the theme of “Throwbacks”. Next term, students will compete with staff in the annual Staff vs Student volleyball match - who will be victorious in 2025?
House weeks closed with an all school Quiz to determine who best knows our House Patrons. Congrats to the Kellerman and Oodgeroo houses who came first on equal points and earned 50 house points each. And a huge congratulations to the following girls who were the top 3 highest and fastest point scorers in the school. These girls also receive 50 points each for their respective houses.

GOLD AWARDS
The following students received Gold Awards at our recent whole school assembly. Students need to accrue 108 merits for this prestigious award; we congratulate these girls for their commitment and perseverance.

ATTENDANCE MATTERS
The importance of attendance at school every day cannot be overstated. Students must be at school each day that they are able. Missing even a few days can make it harder to keep up with classwork and stay connected with peers. Regular attendance helps students develop positive habits, build strong relationships, and thrive academically. Please assist your daughter in getting to school on time in order to be organised for the day. Appointments must be made outside of school hours whenever possible, as partial absences impact student engagement and success.
There is room for improvement in the attendance rate for each year group:

COMPASS AND ABSENCES
A reminder that student absences (whole or partial days) must be explained within 7 days.
After this time the absence will be logged as “Unexplained” and can only be altered in rare instances. Thank you for your support in this matter.

AVA CHOW - CONTINUED SUCCESS AS LANGUAGE AMBASSADOR FOR NSW SCHOOL OF LANGUAGES
Congratulations to our Year 12 student, Ava Chow, as she continues to play a major role in the promotion of languages through the NSW School of Languages’ initiative.
In her role as Language Ambassador, Ava has again been rewarded and entrusted with the duties of showing all students the relevance and importance of learning a language.

Ava and her fellow Ambassadors were invited to a special planning day at the Petersham site of the NSL on Friday 2nd May. Here ideas were discussed and new initiatives were put into action. Having Bethany’s Ava on board will no doubt see some amazing ideas being realised.
Bethany College congratulates Ava on her continued achievements and we all look forward to
seeing which initiatives she helps to bring to fruition.

Library News

The library has continued to be a hive of activity - whether it be reading, studying, engaging in mindful activities or attending Book Club. For this newsletter, I am pleased to announce some ‘firsts’ for our library, which are detailed below.
SHADOW JUDGING
Shadow judging is a program where young people, or "shadowers", across Australia engage with the CBCA Book of the Year Shortlist. They act as judges, mirroring the adult judges by reading, discussing, and creating responses to the shortlisted books. This initiative aims to foster a love of reading, critical thinking, and creative engagement with literature among young people. It is a fantastic opportunity to encourage us to explore new genres and books we never would have considered to read.
This year, we have decided to offer our students the opportunity to be Shadow Judges. This involves reading six of the shortlisted books and deciding their overall winner before the Book of the Year is announced. It’s just one of the things we’re offering in the lead up to what will be very exciting Book Week celebrations in Week 5 of Term 3!
Seven students have signed up, and we have already had some great discussions about thoughts and feelings about the books they are currently reading.
Our Shadow Judges for 2025 are:
- Violet Chung
- Emma Ibrahim
- Grace Mazioun
- Annabella Lolevski
- Keira Willemsen
- Lucy Willemsem
- Elaine Pei

Here is what one of our Shadow Judges had to say about what they have read so far:
'BIRDY' BY SHARON HERNOT
"I quite enjoyed this book, more than I thought I would. I really liked the author's utilisation of the verse novel structure as well as her choice of language throughout the novel, as she managed to convey an entire emotional journey through minimal words. I believe that this is a story that could be relatable to many, due to themes of grief, longing, unlikely friendships and that the author has done a great job at creating a diverse piece of literature in which readers of most ages could connect with (such as those in similar situations to Birdy or Maddy). I was also impressed with the author's effort in providing context into what is implied through different verses in the book (such as Maddy's past or the ending), though also providing the opportunity for readers to form their own conclusions or infer what she is implying, leaving the text open for interpretation based on context given, extending the diversity of this novel. Overall, this book was enjoyable to read, and I liked it's ending as well, therefore I rate it an 8/10." - By Annabella Lolevski
The group is looking forward to reading a number of the books over the holidays. We can’t wait to see which book they vote for!
JIGSAW PUZZLE CLUB - OFF TO A GREAT START!
The Interschool Puzzle Club is a new, inclusive school club in Australia that brings students together to enjoy the benefits of jigsaw puzzles, both for fun and competition. It's designed to promote mental wellbeing, teamwork, and problem-solving skills through collaborative puzzle-solving. Students can participate for recreation or compete to represent their school at state and national jigsaw puzzle competitions organized by the Australian Jigsaw Puzzle Association.
We’re excited to share that the Jigsaw Puzzle Club launched in Week 9 and has already sparked a great response from students. Our budding critical thinkers have been enthusiastically applying their problem-solving skills in preparation for the Interschool Puzzle Competition.
In this friendly challenge, each team works on the same 500-piece puzzle, racing against the clock to achieve their best time. Students are welcome to attempt the puzzle as many times as they like, striving to improve with each attempt.
It’s been wonderful to see the girls collaborating, thinking strategically, and building resilience as they aim to beat their personal bests. As word spreads and the benefits of the club become more visible, we’re confident even more students will be inspired to join in the fun.
We look forward to seeing how far our puzzlers can go as the year progresses.

Mrs Sultana and I hope these holidays provide an opportunity to get cosy with a book and escape to another world! Happy Reading!

Year 10 Wellbeing Day

YEAR 10 WELLBEING DAY
● Value of Welcome
Students in Year 10 are encouraged to live out the motto of open doors, open hearts.
● We have a commitment to openness, inclusion and hospitality
Galatians 3:28 - where the apostle writes, "There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus."
● We welcome, in Jesus’ name, all who visit Bethany College
Romans 15:7 - Therefore, welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.
● We work hard to understand other
2 Corinthians 5:11 - Because we understand our fearful responsibility to the Lord, we work hard to persuade others. God knows we are sincere, and I hope you know this, too.

Year 10 have spent the majority of Term 2 planning the Wellbeing Day with the assistance of the pastoral team creating a social and cultural theme that aligned with our Value of Welcome. The day opened our hearts and affirmed the diversity amongst us as a cohort and opened doors to the stories of adversity and resilience of refugees.
At 9.00am we gathered for mass celebrating our faith and gifts together.

From there we viewed a documentary called ‘The Staging Post’ filmed by the Jesuit Refugee Services (JRS).
The Staging Post follows two Afghan Hazara refugees, Muzafar and Khadim. Stuck in Indonesia after Australia 'stopped the boats' and facing many years in limbo, they built a community and started the school which inspired a refugee education revolution. A real-life, real-time, multi-platform documentary. The Staging Post is about friendship, connection and the power of community.

We followed this by a visit from the JRS and Joannie provided the context for the plight of refugees and we listened to real life experiences from Thanush and Abdul. The students found this eye opening and we will read some reflections further on.
Everyone contributed a cultural dish from their country for our buffet lunch and again the generosity of spirit was evident as we shared our food and communion together.

After lunch we had some cultural performances starting with the Yana, Madison, Alice and Ariel, who set up their small band in the moment and sung a Filipino song and some other songs for us. We then had fun with dance performances from Modern Italy, Macedonia, Lebanon, finalising in the whole cohort participating in the Greek Kalamatiano.
The final performance of the day was a combined video of the cohort singing the college song ‘Act Justly’. The students had been preparing this through the term. My hope is that Year 10 have the confidence to lead the College when we have opportunity to sing our song in community assemblies and formal occasions.
