Term 1 - Week 10
A Message From the Principal
Dear Parents, Carers and Friends of Bethany,
A reflection for Easter
The Easter story is about the hope that we can begin to see the world as God sees the world and so trust that God is indeed everywhere in everything at all times — whether we ourselves can see the hand of God in this moment or not.
In 2012, I was a pilgrim in Jerusalem, studying at the sacred sites. I visited the Garden of Gethsemane, the desert where Jesus spent 40 days and 40 nights and prayed at each station of the Cross as we walked the path that Jesus did to His Crucifixion. Amongst the myriad of pilgrims from across the world, I saw the hope that the Easter story gave to people especially those struggling with their health.
Hope is in the air. Hope that we can find security in the fact of God’s understanding of weakness. We remember the words of Jesus on Good Friday, “Go and sin no more” (John 8:11) and “Today you will be with me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43). Hope that we will eventually cease calling what we ourselves see as “good” and begin to recognize that good (God) comes disguised as everyday people who sometimes make mistakes but are honest and well intentioned.
The story of the Risen Christ is just as relevant today as it was to the first women and men who found the empty tomb.
And so on Sunday we can be elated in the knowledge that:
Christ is risen from the dead, Alleluia Alleluia
Christ has risen indeed, Alleluia Alleluia.
I wish the entire Bethany Community a Happy Easter where the message of Jesus and His suffering and eventual rising is central to our thoughts and actions as we enjoy some time for reflection on what is important in our busy lives.
Some helpful holiday tips
Taking a break from the usual routine of our lives often allows us time to reflect on what we would next like to focus on or improve. Having a positive mindset about mental health can alleviate stress for students as they enter into Term 2 where the challenges of learning are increased. I strongly recommend that after some days of prayer and rest, discuss with your daughter what deadlines she has for Term 2. Ask her to present a timeline to you on when tasks will be worked on. Encourage her not to leave any holiday homework until the last minute and ask her to give you 1 school goal for the term. Organisation will really help to eliminate unnecessary stress next term.
Enrolments for Year 7, 2025
We have noticed over the last few years that some siblings are not having applications for enrolment submitted until quite late and after due dates. Today is the last day for Year 7, 2025 enrolments before they are considered late and are automatically placed on a waiting list. Please do not miss your final opportunity.
A Parent Invitation
I encourage all mums and mother figures including grandmothers to attend our Bethany Mother’s Day Mass on May 11 at 7.30am. It is truly a wonderful time to spend with your daughter. Please RSVP to the College.
Within this newsletter you will see a parent night put on to engage parents in dealing with stress for your daughter. Each term, we are trying to offer parental education nights for those wishing to receive tips, find out the latest research or merely confirm that you are totally already on the right track. Please come to our night on May 3 to further support your daughter.
Thank you to all parents for your support this term, to each student for her effort and to our staff for their complete dedication to persisting to teach at their highest level. I am proud to lead this community because of the dedication by all. I also wish our Orthodox families a Happy Easter for one week’s time.
God Bless

From the Assistant Principal
The holidays provide an excellent opportunity for the girls and staff to reset and rejuvenate after what has been a great term at Bethany. The last few weeks have been a busy time with tasks for all our students and in particular, our Year 12 girls who have just completed an assessment block. Whilst many Year 12 students will use this break from routine to work on Major Projects and catch up on study notes, it is important to first take some time to relax.
Term 2
Term 2 commences for students on Wednesday April 26, when we will gather to commemorate Anzac Day. Staff will return to the College on Monday April 24 for a day of professional learning.
Girls return in their winter uniform. Below is a reminder of the College requirements for our winter uniform.

What is Happening in Religious Education
Our Project Compassion Fundraising Campaign ends today. An enormous thank you to Miss Jones, Mrs Buxton, Year Coordinators, students and staff for all the initiatives that not only raised almost $5000 but for the community spirit that was generated by a common vision For All Future Generations.
This morning we gathered for our Easter Liturgy, inspired by Richard Furey’s, Mary’s Way of the Cross. “Is not the way of the Cross the way of every person's life? Doesn't every life have suffering, falls, hurts, rejections, condemnations, death, burial and resurrection? It has been a Catholic tradition through the centuries to meditate the Way of the Cross, so that it becomes the way of life.”
Like Mary, we make our own via della croce but find comfort and consolation in the fact that, on that way, Jesus is with us.

Attendance Matters
ATTENDANCE % | Term 1 Weeks 1 - 3 | Term 1 Weeks 1 - 5 | Term 1 Weeks 1 - 7 | Term 1 Weeks 1 - 10 |
Year 7 | 91% | 94% | 94% | 94% |
Year 8 | 89% | 90% | 91% | 91% |
Year 9 | 88% | 88% | 90% | 90% |
Year 10 | 87% | 89% | 90% | 90% |
Year 11 | 89% | 90% | 91% | 91% |
Year 12 | 90% | 92% | 92% | 93% |
Bethany Average | 89% | 90% | 91% | 92% |
Student attendance at Bethany has averaged 92% over all weeks and year groups this term. This is a very good way to end the term, as well as a solid base with which to begin and progress in Term 2. The research on the positive correlation between school attendance and learning growth is well documented. A pertinent finding from the NSW Centre for Education, Statistics and Evaluation (July 2022) was that students who report positive attendance behaviours in Year 7 are (on average) three months ahead in their learning by Year 9, compared with students who have poor attendance behaviours - this equates to 18 weeks of school! School attendance impacts students' academic development and other long-term outcomes, and we ask that families continue to support school attendance, explain absences and limit outside appointments for students during the school term.
Harmony Week
Bethany celebrated Harmony Week two weeks ago, with a host of activities aimed to foster respect for and tolerance of cultural diversity. Students were presented with facts, questions and video’s around the theme in pastoral groups and asked to draw a flag from their countries of origin. These are now displayed proudly in our library and students have taken great pleasure in finding their flag or guessing which countries each flag is from.
Students and staff also completed a form to indicate their countries of origin - the map below represents the countries where our Bethany community has ancestry.
Youth Week is a week-long celebration held in early April each year that is organised by young people, for young people, in communities across the state. Youth Week began as a NSW Government initiative in 1989, and has since grown to be a celebration of young people in every state and territory across the country. In 2023 Youth Week will be celebrated from 20/4 ~ 30/4. Click here to access Youth Week activities, some of which occur over the coming school break.

Library News
With the start of a new year, the College Library has been buzzing with activity! It is my pleasure to share with you the wonderful things that have been happening in the Library during Term 1.
Year 7 Orientation
We began 2023 by welcoming our new Year 7 students who have been regular visitors, utilising our various study spaces. I also had the pleasure of spending some time with each Year 7 class as part of our orientation program, making sure they were aware of all of the learning resources that are on offer in the Library so they can maximize their success.
Library Lover’s Week
Week 2 was all about celebrating why we love our College library. Students were asked to write down one reason why they love their library in a heart shaped piece of paper. They were displayed in the library and have since remained on the walls as they bring such a positive atmosphere to our space. Students also had the chance to guess what was their teacher’s favourite book. The winners with the highest scores won a canteen voucher.
On Valentine's Day, students were encouraged to visit the Library to “fall in love” with a good book. The ‘Blind Date with a Book’ initiative was very popular as books were wrapped and choices were made based only on genre, themes and the first line. We had to restock for lunch because it was so successful. Many were clearly hooked! Students also received a heart shaped lolly with each loan on the day.
Australian Reading Hour
Held on Thursday 9th March, this day had a short and sweet message: read, share, and enjoy books! This year, the Library celebrated Australian Reading Hour by offering students access to the library for an hour before school to sit in our comfy couches and just read. A small snack and drink was offered to enjoy while reading.
We had 17 students register their interest and many enjoyed quiet reading for an hour before school began. It was lovely to enjoy an hour of reading in each other's company.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
February 27 marked the start of the annual Premier's Reading Challenge for Years 7-10. The Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely. Students have been informed of the various PRC rules and regulations through their English classes. More information is available at the Library Circulation Desk or on the PRC website. We have had a lot of interest this year, which is fantastic! It’s still not too late to register your interest. Please see the Library if you are interested.
Kits Lit Quiz
The Kids' Lit Quiz is an annual literature competition for children aged 10 to 13. It puts readers onto the stage and lets them compete for fantastic prizes. This year, Bethany College will be entering two teams to compete at St Ursula’s College in Term 2.
On Friday 31st March, Year 7M English participated in a trial run of the Kids Lit Quiz to determine which two teams would be selected to represent the College. In teams of 4, students were quizzed on questions related to Children’s Literature regarding from Harry Potter to nursery rhymes! It was a close finish, with two teams coming equal first. Congratulations to the following students who will represent the College in Term 2:
Team 1 - Alessia Coratella-Chalabi - Sophia Flarakos - Emily O'Mara - Katia Ritchie | Team 2 - Anastasia Berios - Jenna Larpin - Jasmine Liang - Pan Tang |
Reserve
- Scarlett Grbevski
Term 2 has an exciting opportunity coming….Book Club!
We hope to launch Book Club next term. It will be held during one Recess each week. The purpose is to provide an opportunity to share in our love of reading with others. An ‘Expression of Interest’ form is currently available on Compass. If students could please fill this before the end of term, we can determine if there is enough interest to go ahead.
We hope the upcoming break provides everyone with the chance to fall in love with a good book!

Sydney Catholic Schools Sydney Championships
On Monday 27th March, Bethany Swimmers competed at the Sydney Catholic Schools Sydney Championships where students swam against the top swimmers from each of the four conferences.
Bethany had some amazing results, particularly Kelsey Corbett who was not only awarded 12 Years Age Champion, but also the Overall Female Swimmer of the Meet! Tameeka Johnson also took home the 17yrs+ Age Champion Award and Juliet King was Runner Up Age Champion in the 16yrs Division.
Our Intermediate Team dominated in both Freestyle and the Medley Relays again, taking home the gold, while our Senior Team finished Second in the Freestyle and First in the Medley Relay. In the final event of the night, Bethany also claimed gold in the 6x 50m All Age Relay, well done girls!
Students went on to compete in the NSWCCC Swimming Trials and after some outstanding results, the following students have been selected in the NSWCCC Team to compete at All Schools in June:
Tameeka Johnson, Amy Dambiec, Jacinta Kumcevski, Jessica Ryan, Juliet King, Monique Johnson, Millie Wong, Gisele Galea, Kelsey Corbett
SCS Representative Sport Update
Last week saw the conclusion of the Conference Competition, with our Junior and Intermediate Touch Football Teams winning their conference division and progressing to the Sydney Championships. Our Senior Basketball Team was unfortunately defeated in their Grand Final match by only four points (38-34)!
Charlotte Teplicanec and Isabella Borg were awarded Player of the Match.
On Wednesday our Junior and Intermediate Touch Football Team attended the Sydney Championships where the teams played off to be crowned Sydney Catholic Schools Champions.
The competition was tough, however both teams successfully won their first game and progressed to the Grand Final.
Unfortunately our Junior Team was narrowly beaten by MSJ. Well done girls on your efforts in making it this far in the competition and being awarded runners up.

Project Compassion
A big thank you to Year 9 for the effort that they have put into the two fundraisers over the past two weeks to raise money for Project Compassion, with a total of $285 raised. Thanks also to the Year 9 SRC members for their work with these events.
On Thursday, the girls had a ‘Jumper Day’ in exchange for a donation of a gold coin or a note and in our pastoral period on Tuesday, they competed to see which homeroom could build the longest coin line, with 9 Silver being crowned our winners!
The money raised from these initiatives will go toward helping people in Australia who are struggling. For more information, please visit the Caritas website.
Evie Kalevski
I wanted to take the time to acknowledge the hard work of a Year 9 student, Evie Kalevski. Evie spent time over the Christmas break putting together a motivational booklet for her peers. She curated this and included beautiful images and motivational quotes with each year having a separate page and separate focus, linked to the concerns relevant to that age group. This was presented at an SRC meeting as well as to the Pastoral Team for their input and both groups were incredibly impressed with the end product. Copies of this have been placed in the library as well as in the area outside of the counsellor’s office for students to have a look through. Please also find extracts of this below. Congratulations to Evie for her leadership and her passion for mental health and wellbeing.

Term 1 Science @ Bethany
YEAR 9 DISEASE AND RESPONSE
This term Year 9 has been studying the nervous system and the immune system.
Some classes had the opportunity to dissect a sheep’s brain. This activity helped students gain a better understanding of brain anatomy and the skill of drawing labelled scientific diagrams.
Year 9 students also grew bacteria and moulds swabbed from different surfaces and compared the effectiveness of washing hands with soap vs using just hand sanitiser.
YEAR 10 CHEMISTRY INCURSION
Year 10 students were involved in an amazing Chemistry Show on Tuesday 14th March in Tallunga Hall. They got to experience the wonders of Chemistry first-hand through a range of colourful experiments and demonstrations.
YEAR 11 INVESTIGATING SCIENCE FIELD TRIP

Fee-Free Apprenticeships are a great way for students to launch their careers
There’s never been a better time to start an apprenticeship in NSW. The NSW Government is paying the course cost for 100,000 new apprenticeships – meaning apprentices undertaking a government funded apprenticeship no longer face a student fee of up to $2000.
Apprenticeships are a great career pathway. They combine on-the-job training with classroom study to give you the skills and experience employers are looking for. Apprenticeships generally take around 3-4 years to complete, and apprentices earn a salary while they learn.
There are more than 120 different apprenticeship courses available in NSW, in a range of industries including construction, cooking, aviation and automotive.
