    A Message from the Principal

Dear Parents, Carers and Friends of Bethany,

As a Catholic, May is a special month to reflect on the role of Mary, the mother of Jesus, in our lives. Mary is an important figure in the Catholic faith, and she is revered for her humility, obedience, and faithfulness to God.

One way to reflect on Mary during May is to pray the Rosary, which is a traditional Catholic devotion that focuses on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ through the intercession of Mary.

Another way to reflect on Mary during May is to meditate on her virtues and how we can emulate them in our own lives. Mary's humility, for example, can inspire us to seek a deeper sense of humility in our own lives, recognising our own limitations and weaknesses while also striving to serve others and glorify God.

Finally, we can reflect on Mary's role as the Mother of the Church and ask for her intercession in our spiritual lives. Mary's love and care for Jesus during his life on earth can serve as a model for us as we seek to deepen our relationship with God and grow in holiness.

May we always turn to Mary, our Mother and Queen, for her guidance and intercession, as we seek to live out our faith and grow closer to God.

Please come to our Mother’s Day Mass on Thursday at 7.30am in the College Hall. Already we have over 400 attendees.

Welcome to Term 2 and I hope that all families had an enjoyable Easter and holiday break. The girls have returned beautifully in their Winter uniforms ready for the term ahead. We began the term with a special ANZAC Day assembly hosting guests from Bexley RSL. Through the power of story, the assembly was told of 2 special men who had served for our country and what life after service looked like for them. A wreath was laid at  our Lone Pine tree towards the back of our school. It is always special to welcome our friends from Bexley Rsl who contribute so much to our College in the form of funds to support academic achievement and leadership. Thank you to Hugh Quinn, Jack Thompson and Anne Brown.

Term 2 encompasses academic challenges for all students with the culmination of semester assessments and reports. Each girl from Year 7 to 12 has a schedule for their formal assessment times for their classes. These assessments are just one way where teachers receive feedback. Work completed on a daily basis, discussions held in class, group work and research performed are all valuable ways to assess students. Reports for Year 11 and 12 are currently being written with parent teacher interviews on May 17. For all students though, turning up to school, being engaged in lessons, participating as an active class member and making teachers aware if there are struggles are all vital components of performing at one’s best. Please have regular discussions with your daughter on what she is proud of at school and what she would like to focus on improving.

    From the Assistant Principal

Welcome back to our families for Term 2. I wanted to take a moment to promote a few of the events that have taken place over the past two weeks and draw your attention to those that are coming up.

We began the school term with an assembly to recognise and pay respect to those who serve our country. We were joined for our ANZAC Assembly by representatives from Bexley RSL Sub-branch, who are always on hand to support our students and the College with developing a deeper understanding of this day. Our student leaders led a beautiful assembly that was put together by Mr Evan Woollam and Ms Nohara Metros, leaders of the HSIE Department.

On Wednesday of this week, our College Counsellor Simone Nind, with support from our Leader of Wellbeing, Charlotte Buxton, presented a parent information session about supporting students at home in their emotional and mental wellbeing. The evening covered topics such as how to create a safe environment for challenging conversations at home, building trust and relationships and dealing with difficult emotions. The evening was informative and relaxed where parents asked lots of questions about how to talk to their loved ones about hard things. The evening was a great success and we hope the first of many opportunities for sessions such as these.

Next Tuesday 9th May, Headspace is offering a parent and student workshop.

The Headspace Schools and Communities Mental Health Education Program delivers free mental health education workshops to secondary school communities across Australia.

The student workshops aim to increase mental health literacy, reduce stigma, and build the capacity of young people to understand their own wellbeing needs, support their peers and explore pathways for help-seeking. Headspace also offers Parent and Carer workshops alongside the student workshops. More information about the programs available can be found here.

Headspace National is also hosting an education webinar for parents and carers of young people in the Sydney region of NSW Tuesday, 9 May 2023 12:00 - 1:15pm.

    The session aims to:

    • Strengthen your understanding of mental health and wellbeing
    • Build skills and strategies to support your young person's mental health
    • Explore the conversational approach to talking to your young person about their mental health
    • Build awareness of local, state and national support services.

Click here to register via Eventbrite or copy the URL into your web browser.

All those who register will receive a digital information pack after the session that includes key messages as well as links to resources and support services. For more information, please email: programsupport@headspace.org.au

    What's Happening in Religious Education

    The Month of Mary

“The month which the piety of the faithful has long dedicated to Mary, the Mother of God. Our heart rejoices at the thought of the moving tribute of faith and love that will be paid to the Queen of Heaven in every corner of the earth. For this is the month during which Christians, in their churches and their homes, offer the Virgin Mother more fervent and loving acts of homage and veneration; and it is the month in which a greater abundance of God's merciful gifts comes down to us from our Mother's throne”.

                                                                                                                                            - Mense Maio, Pope Paul VI,1965

St. Vincent de Paul Society Night Patrol

What does it mean to be a participant in the life of Jesus Christ? This is initiated by right and duty bestowed in Baptism and continues in the performative actions of the assembly in the sacred liturgy but ultimately, authentic Christian living allows adherents to participate as mediators of Christ in the world by the power of the Holy Spirit, to continue building the Kingdom of God.

Servant learning opportunities provide students with hands-on experiences that promote personal growth, character development, and a deeper understanding of community needs. St Vincent de Paul Night Patrol is an example of a servant learning opportunity that involves serving the less fortunate through outreach and support. The program typically involves volunteers distributing food, water, clothing, and other basic necessities to those in need. Volunteers also provide emotional support and referrals to other services, such as healthcare or shelter. Participating in St Vincent de Paul Night Patrol can be a powerful servant learning opportunity as it provides individuals with the chance to develop empathy, compassion, and a deeper understanding of the issues facing marginalised communities. Volunteers can also develop skills in communication, problem-solving, and teamwork, all while making a tangible impact on the lives of those they serve. These experiences can help individuals build a sense of purpose, cultivate a spirit of service, and develop leadership skills that can benefit them both personally and professionally.

Bethany College proudly supports St Vincent de Paul Society Night Patrol and the staff and students involved thus far cannot get enough of this experience. Some of the comments made by students have included:

    “How is this not compulsory?”

“These are the faces behind the statistics.”

“I can’t wait to go out again.”

“Miss, sign me up please, my friend said it was amazing.”

“If you’re full, can you start a standby list?”

“I get it now, you hear it in RE lessons and throughout the school but this is the real deal, I want to help.”

“When is the next assembly? Can I talk about this? Everyone needs to know!”

Thank you to staff and students for participating in the life of Christ in this way. Any student who is 16 years or older is welcome to contact Miss Jones if they would like to add their names to the standby list!

    Wellbeing Update

Our first Parent information night for the year was held in the College library on Wednesday evening and attended by approximately 30 families. The forum benefitted from the expertise and experience of Simone Nind (Bethany counsellor) and Rebecca Mayr (St Mary Star of the Sea counsellor) as they provided ideas and strategies for interactions with teens, to better understand how they are feeling or what they are worried about. The different types of stressors that teens may experience were discussed, as well practical insights into the emotional and cognitive world of an adolescent. Parents received folders after Question Time containing various handouts and ideas to take home and reference when needed. Please stay tuned for information pertaining to our Parent information evening in Term Three.

The Wellbeing team at Bethany have undertaken various professional development opportunities this year, the aim to enhance our skills, strategies and understandings when working with your daughters in a variety of contexts. External courses attended so far this year are Youth Mental Health first aid, School refusal, Suicide prevention and Vaping. Being informed of current research, strategies and health information allows the Wellbeing team to more fully support each student at the College across a wide range of needs.

Please continue to explain any absent days for your daughter via the Compass app, phone call or email to the College. This ensures that the absence is valid, and continues the partnership between the College, family and student - another vital link in academic success and development of your daughter.

    Year 7 Camp

From students: Andromache Papas and Olivia Angelopoulos

Year 7 2023 Camp officially started when everybody had to turn on their alarms for an early wake up so they could head to school early in the morning for roll call. After the 50 minute journey, that for some felt like forever, we finally arrived at the Sydney Academy of Sport and Recreation Centre in Narrabeen . When we entered through the gate we were taking in our surroundings which were mainly natural flora with a few buildings. Year 7 then met our instructors and headed inside the dining hall in which we would later have all our meals in. We had a long talk about what to expect throughout the next two nights and 3 days but the one thing everyone was waiting for was the cabin rooms.

Activities were definitely an enjoyable experience for a lot of people in year 7 as a lot of firsts were made.

Raft building was something that not a lot of people have experienced. You had to build a raft out of PVC pipes, water containers and rope but you didn’t get much of each. You then had to take your device to the water (if you could even carry it) then race it to the instructor and back. It was definitely a challenge but it was very entertaining to see people's inventions and a great time to laugh with each other.

While there were many activities to look forward to during camp, some of us most anticipated the daily game nights. Even though we could only stay for two nights, we had some hysterical experiences. For example, on the first night, we participated in a variety of pair and group games. Such as, extreme thumb wrestling, partner hide and seek and of course, the activity most enjoyed the most, it didn’t even have a name… In this insane game, two people from two teams volunteered to be blind folded. After this, they attempted to make their way to the other side of the court by their team's guidance to retrieve a pool noodle. Once the much desired pool noodle was acquired, the volunteer had to try and hit their opponent with the noodle! This took a while, but was still the most enjoyable part of the game. I will admit that some of us lost our voices that night.

The next night, Year 7 took part in a Trivia Night. In table teams, we all answered a variety of questions, which were hard enough, until a twist came. Every two rounds or so, one member from each team would partake in a bonus round. These consisted of some crazy challenges, from eating packets of straight vegemite to eating a whole bar of Weet - Bix, Year 7 would do anything it took to win a few extra points.

Overall, camp was definitely an enjoyable experience that I am sure we will remember and treasure forever of course this wouldn’t have been possible without the teacher so we would like to thank those that came with Year 7 to camp. This unforgettable experience created memories that we will cherish forever and look back on and laugh.

    Britannica School

In a time when information is so readily available, it can be hard for students to know where to start and if it is credible and reliable. Britannica School is an online encyclopedia that is a reliable source of information as all articles have been written and checked by professionals to make sure the information is reliable, relevant and up to date. This is a great place to start the research process!

We currently have a 3 week trial with Britannica School which will end on May 19. Student usage data in this period will help us in knowing if this is a worthwhile subscription to consider going forward.

If you currently have a lesson or an assessment that would require research over the next 3 weeks, you are encouraged to use this in your early stages of research.

Year 7 History Research Skills Lessons

Each Year 7 History class will have a research skills lesson in the library this week. This is a wonderful opportunity to explain important steps in the research process and how to search smarter, not harder! Each student will receive a handout that includes an 8-step process for researching effectively. If there is any student in Years 8-12 who feels they could benefit from some research assistance, please come and visit the library.

    Book Club

Due to high levels of interest, the Bethany Book Club will be commencing in Week 3! The numbers were so high that we will have a separate Junior and Senior book club - the reading culture at Bethany is certainly alive!

Could interested students please visit the library for our first meeting next week on the following day:

    • Years 10-12 - Tuesday Recess
    • Years 7-9 - Wednesday Recess

Feel free to bring along a book you are currently reading.

Students who did not complete the Google Form are still welcome to join us.

    Future Focus Program

On Friday, April 28 Sienna Grasso (Y12), Celina Sukkar (Y12), and Zoe Katsaounis (Y11) headed to Sydney University for the Ngara (listen, hear, think) Future Focus Program. The weather was stunning as we walked from Redfern Sation into the heart of Darlington Campus. We were greeted by the friendly staff and listened to some of the great opportunities and pathways the University has to offer for Indigenous students.

The girls had a great time exploring the grounds and got a real taste of University life. They were amazed to see that the University had a post office, multiple food courts, a Subway and a bank!

I had a great time seeing the campus and getting a sense of what it would be like to attend university. Learning more about the different paths I may take to apply to the University of Sydney and the support that they provide also gave me reassurance about the future.

    - Celina Sukkar

Overall the day was both informative and really fun! We of course had to get some happy snaps at the Quadrangle!

Table Tennis update - Mr Devlin

Two Year 7 girls travelled to Hurstville Aquatic Centre to represent the College at the Sydney Catholic Schools Conference tournament for table tennis. Chloe Papadopoulos and Andromache Papas competed extremely well. The day was run in the Davis Cup tennis format, the girls competed in singles and then together in doubles.

Our first game was against OLMC Burraneer and we lost 5 rubbers to nil. We then met St Ursula’s, Kingsgrove in the Semi Final and we started to find some real form and won 5 - 0.

The way the draw went we then had to go up against OLMC again in the final. The girls were ready for this and felt confident they could gain some revenge.

The final was an incredibly tight tussle, every game went the full 3 sets. We won our first 2 singles and were looking very good. OLMC rallied and fought back and ended up winning 3 rubbers to 2.

The Convenor of the tournament was so impressed with the quality of the table tennis that was played.

The girls finished with the Silver medal and should be very proud of themselves. They now progress to the Sydney Championships at Homebush in Week 8.
