A Message from the Principal
Dear Parents, Carers and Friends of Bethany,
“The environment is our common home, and all of us are brothers and sisters. If we destroy the environment, it will destroy us in return.”-St. Francis of Assisi
On Monday we celebrate World Environment Day. This year’s theme focuses on solutions to plastic pollution under the campaign #BeatPlasticPollution. In 2015 Pope Francis published his second encyclical entitled Laudato Si which had the aim of caring for Earth as all of our common home. As Catholics we are called to respect all of God’s creations including our environment. What a wonderful discussion on reduction of plastics would be around the family dinner table.
Staff News
Last week we farewelled Mr Reece Bailey who has taken up a promotional role in Diverse Learning with Sydney Catholic Schools. We wish Mr Bailey well and thank Mrs Marina Nashed for taking up the role of Acting Year 7 Coordinator.
Today Miss Turk leaves the College for health reasons. Thanks to Miss Turk for your time at Bethany this year and we wish you well beyond the gates of Bethany.
Year 11 and 12 Academic Awards
It is always a pleasure to hold ceremonies which affirm students and on Tuesday we did just this for our Stage 6 students, recognising those students who placed first in course as well as those whose efforts have been outstanding during the year.
This year we have extended the number of awards given to include effort awards from each course which is in keeping with encouraging students to grow at their level. We will replicate these effort awards at the Years 7 - 10 ceremony at the end of this term. Thank you to the 200 or so parents who attended our awards ceremony on Tuesday.

From the Assistant Principal
Last week, I had the privilege to attend the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart’s Colloquium. The Colloquium is a three-day residential experience for people who work and minister in the tradition of Mary MacKillop. Whilst the Josephite and Charity Sisters are part of the history of Bethany, I still found many connections to the work we do as a community and our Bethany values.
The challenges facing Mary Mackillop 1866 are as relevant today as they were in her time and I see our community working to make small changes to the lives of others. I’m especially proud of our Year 12 leaders who are working hard on a project for the Vinnie’s Winter Appeal. They are organising a clothing swap at school and asking for donations. Students can donate clothes and purchase others with all left over items and money raised going to the Winter Appeal.
A reminder that Bethany College is participating in an online survey - Tell Them From Me (TTFM). The survey gives us valuable feedback on what our community thinks about many aspects of school life. The information you provide will be used to maintain our commitment to working together in partnership to further improve student learning and wellbeing at Bethany.
The survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete and you are able to access the parent survey on your computer or mobile device via the following link: https://tellthemfromme.com/hnsy3

Veni Spiritus Sanctus (Come Holy Spirit)!
I invite you to reflect on this Pentecost Homily by Richard Leonard SJ:
Have you noticed how, these days when we meet someone and ask how they are, they reply, ‘busy’ or ‘frantic’ or ‘as busy as ever’. I wonder what would happen if we replied, ‘Relaxed and laid back’ or ‘taking time to smell the roses’. I don’t think we would be believed, or we might get a lecture from our friends on how lucky we are not to be busy!
As Christians we have to be careful about this busy-ness competition. Being active in our lives and engaged with the world around us is a gift, but if we are honest about our busyness, some of it is not virtuous. It’s about denial, avoidance or trying to stay up with our peer group.
In John's account of the first Pentecost the primary gift Jesus' Spirit bestows on the disciples is peace. It's curious, isn't it, that just as we all compete with each other to be the busiest person we know, we also complain that what we really want is ‘some peace and quiet’. We can't have it both ways. Compulsive frantic activity is the enemy of peace.
Sometimes we can think that peace and quiet is sitting in the lotus position in a darkened room. Christ’s gift of peace is more robust than that. Peace is like all the best things in life: an attitude of mind and a habit born of consistently making good choices. Some people can do a large of amount of work and be quite serene about it. Peace, for them, is an affair of the mind and a way of life.
Seneca, a 2nd century philosopher, noticed, even in his day, how most of his friends and acquaintances were lacking peace. He wrote a famous book on anger and how to deal with it. He especially noticed that his richest friends were the angriest of all. Seneca came to believe that the reason so many people were agitated was that they had an unreasonable expectation about how smoothly their day would go. Those who were rich thought their money would buy them an easier life in every way and so when it didn’t, they got the angriest of all. If Seneca is right and we want more peace and quiet, we have to have realistic expectations of each day and factor in the things that might go wrong. Seneca's secular wisdom holds that the more aware we are of the frailties in us, others and life, the fewer fights we would have. In turn this would lead to fewer occasions when we would need to ask or give forgiveness. In today’s Pentecost Gospel forgiveness is the second gift Jesus bequeaths the disciples.
If we really want to cultivate peace and quiet in our lives we have to confront the things we are trying to avoid or deny. Often these things hinge on painful memories or events where we were destructive toward others or they were toward us. Unless we forgive ourselves or forgive them, our busyness will ensure that we have enough clamour and activity to stay away from ugly memories. Unfortunately it usually follows that when we are so busy not dealing with the sins of our past, peace and quiet stay well away from us as well.
Let's pray in this Eucharist that while the Spirit might allow us to retain any sins, we choose Jesus’ first option this Pentecost and forgive as generously as we can those who have tried to crucify us. We might have to forgive ourselves as well. And then, like Jesus, with old wounds exposed, we can rejoice that the Spirit has breathed into us the greatest gift of all: the peace and quiet we most crave and need.

Year 9 Spirituality Day
Today, we had an amazing day at The Tops Conference Centre deepening our understanding of the Year 9 Value of Justice, grounded in the following Scripture, “He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” - Micah 6:8. Students began the day exploring the concept of justice, followed by a presentation from Kate Conroy, Metropolitan Schools Engagement Officer for St Vincent de Paul Society. The day concluded with a celebration of the Eucharist for which we were delighted to be joined by Father Peter Kwak from Regina Coeli Memorial Church, Beverly Hills.

Year 12 Studies of Religion 2 students go on Hajj at Bethany
Thank you, Mrs Miers, for creating an authentic learning opportunity for the Year 12 students in Studies of Religion 2 Unit. As part of their academic and objective study of a significant religious practice in Islam, Mrs Miers reimagined the sacred pilgrimage attended by over 2 million Muslims worldwide, in the largest religious gathering in the world, for the Bethany context. As part of the Syllabus, students are required to demonstrate how the Principal Beliefs of the tradition are expressed through the rituals of the practice such as; entering the state of ritual purity known as Ihram (also white clothing), Tawaf (circumambulating the Kaaba), Sa’i (walking briskly between the mounds of Safa and Marwa to replicate Hagar’s desperate search for water for her son, Ishmael), Wuquf (standing) on the day of Arafat, Jamaraat (stoning of the pillars in rejection of Satan and temptation), and Ubiya (Feast of Sacrifice where Qurbani meat is shared with the poor all over the world). The students were delighted as this lesson brought their Syllabus to life and allowed them a deep learning experience.

Study Skills - Habits of Effective Students
Last Wednesday, the College hosted Dr Prue Salter from Enhanced Learning, who presented a series of practical strategies to assist students with their study. Below is a summary of the main points that were discussed.
Effective students are those who have learnt to study smarter rather than harder. Below is a list of the top habits that effective students do.
- MAKE THE MOST OF CLASS TIME: You are going to be sitting in class anyway, so you may as well make the most of the experience! Time wasted in class is lost learning opportunities or time you need to make up at home. To make the most of class time stay on task and be as involved as you can in the lesson.
- ASK QUESTIONS OFTEN: Students who are effective will ask questions when they don’t understand something, they don’t wait until 3 weeks into the topic then say ‘I don’t understand any of this!’. So if you aren’t sure about something, then ask your teacher.
- COMPLETE ALL HOMEWORK: Your teachers are giving you the homework for a reason, even if you are unsure what the reason might be! It is all part of building your learning in the subject. Focus on putting 100% effort into completing all homework to the best of your ability.
- DO INDEPENDENT LEARNING: Students who do well academically do more than just the set homework. Rather than cramming just before an exam, they learn as they go. This means the nights when they don’t have much homework they step up and take responsibility for their learning and ask themselves ‘what else could I be doing to help me understand and learn my subjects?’. Often this entails reviewing previous work that was difficult or preparing study notes in advance.
- ARE FOCUSED WHEN WORKING: Students who are effective usually work in blocks of time at home, anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour, but in that time they focus on the task at hand. This means they have removed all distractions and commit that when they are working on schoolwork, they are just working on schoolwork – no personal activities at the same time.
- NEVER CONFUSE ‘READING’ WITH ‘STUDYING’: Effective learners know how to study properly for a test. They know that just reading your notes over and over is not an effective way to learn. Instead, they read a section then test themselves on it, seeing what they can say out loud or write down. They also do lots of revision questions or past exam papers so they can practise the skills of the subject and identify areas of weakness.
- WORK SMART FOR ASSESSMENTS: Effective students spend time when they are given an assessment ensuring they understand the requirements and the marking criteria. They work to the guidelines of the assessment and approach the task systematically, making a plan and setting targets for when they want to complete each step.

Sydney Catholic Schools Eisteddfod
The Sydney Catholic Schools Eisteddfod gives all students the opportunity to hone their skills and perform in front of an audience, no matter their ability or experience. They receive valuable feedback from industry professionals as well as interacting with one another in a safe and supportive environment.
Bethany College was proudly represented by our students in the categories of Dance, Vocal Duo/Trio/Quartets and Slam Poetry over the last two weekends.
Congratulations to the following students:
Anastasia McNeil - Dance (Advanced Contemporary/Lyrical): Judge’s encouragement award for best performer and choreography
Jaymee Louise Buena, Jeanna Garcia and Nicole Banez - Music (Stage 6 Open Vocal Trio): 2nd place
Isabella Koshakji and Olivia Koshakji - Music (Stage 6 Open Vocal Trio): Encouragement award
Three students from Bethany College performed in the Slam Poetry category of the Eisteddfod. This is the first time the Slam Poetry category has run. The judges and audience were greatly moved by these newcomers’ performances, with those in attendance expressing their awe at the talent of this inaugural group of young poets.
Sienna Di Mari, Year 12, received a Highly Commended for her poem, Ok So Basically Literally Like. The adjudicator praised Sienna’s connection with her character, as well as her argument, comedy, and overall message, adding that she found it “extremely difficult” not to award a trophy for this performance.
Sienna Kovacevic, Year 9, received a Highly Commended award for her poem, The Unspoken Truth. Sienna was praised for her bold and confident performance, her argument, and connection to her poem.
Elisha Petelo, Year 11, was awarded 2nd Place for her poem, The Frazzled Setting. Elisha was praised for her charisma, natural performance style, and ability to connect with the audience. Audience members were moved to tears by Elisha’s performance, with one commenting that Elisha’s mastery of pace, expression, and vocal modulation were well beyond her years.

Model Solar Cars are really rolling!!
Scorpio Technology Sponsorship
The Year 10 Enrichment Maths and STEM class will, this year, be able to build a much more
competitive model solar car because of the generous sponsorship provided by Scorpio Technology.
This is a small technology company in Victoria who have responded to our call for help and provided us with the parts to build an even better car than last year.
What we recognised last year was that the other schools were much better equipped, and we had
little chance of competing.
Scorpio Technology appreciated our plight and, to encourage girls in engineering, willingly came to our aid.
We would like to thank Arnie and his team for their prompt response and their generous
contribution.
